  • My name is Clarissa Guillen, I'm a first-generation, low-income college graduate who once lost all of her academic scholarships, failed out of a bio major, got told to her face she wasn't smart enough to get into medical school, and eventually helped myself graduate with honors from a rigorous nursing program while working full time.
This is the story of how I went from failing 7 classes to graduating with honors in College.

This is the motivational video I was looking for. Back in highschool, I was also a good student and enjoyed studying. Now, I'm on my second year at uni and about to fail two courses. Despite I have my family support and the fact that I'm financially stable, I feel like something is missing because I don't have the motivation to study I had when I was in highschool. As you said, I think my problem is that I haven't found a good way to study and balance my life with uni. Sometimes when I have to study for an exam, I want to do everything but studying, and I'm not really sure about how to motivate me. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and pieces of advices with us, you're really strong and optimistic.

Venting and my own story Below:
I'm actually in community college. Low income, first gen. Back in high school and middle school top of my class but college is just a beast. I took summer courses for a headstart and aced them with flying colors but as of the Fall Semester of 2022, I'm failing my major in computer science. It's really broken me and I'm especially scared of telling my mom. I'm slowly coming to terms (as a perfectionist), that it's ok and it's the cards that I'm dealing with. Just to not give up on my degree and try not to believe it's the end of the world. I'm not dumb or anything, I just need the right space, people, and mentality. This video pretty much proves it, and dang I'm sorry that the academic counselor said that. It sounds so unprofessional to just shoot those dreams down like that and not recommend anything, but I'm glad you stood your ground and found something you enjoy!

I also failed my 1st year and it wasnt even science based when 19. 😔. I also dropped or stopped my transition year nursing courses at 26 because of another loss that affected my mind. I wish I stayed at age 19, I could have been in law school and graduated... I was not believing in myself and my decisions, and that ruined me, rooted in abuse and historical traumas my family experiences.
Okay, I am going into second year Nursing at age 32 and doing pharmacology and dosage calculations. I failed my first human anatomy physiology course at 39% ended at 70%(I worked my asss offf). I got the average of 77% overall... Couple 85% and 80%, I got lucky and got one 95% (I lucked out). But I want to raise my 77% overall average to 90%. So, 13% I need to work on this. Raise up my final grade in every class. I can perform a 80% when functioning at what I would call my best. So how do I raise the bar on what I think is my "best". In the mind the best is like "all you got". So now we out here strategizing dreaming beyond our minds limitations. I hope I can do it.
I want to go to med school or law school or do graduate school(nurse practitioner).
One thing having a chokehold on me is my addiction to workingout and my body image and im older. I feel my mind is losing its sharpness. To be active is to keep my mind sharp at this age. Now to balance that. Its time to stop abusing myself and challenge myself in honor of those lost and not here today.
Listen-I was never a honors student. My behaviour never matched because I was homeless as a teen and mother really was abusive. Lost 2 brothers to addictions.
I have a cousin who I am so proud of in med school but was raised up not in turmoil. So I know I could hace it in me. Can I still win with so many Ls and hits I've taken. Praying.

Based on the comments and your video, I can see that I am not alone in this world. We all have similar feelings and It is motivational to keep up in a world of inequality. I did not have a good education in high school, and I got a scholarship in a rich people university in Brazil and I just feel so out of place. I compare myself to people who have different backstories and higher income and parental supporting, I just feel so unmotivated by seeing teachers that came from the same reality of those rich people telling me that I should switch my graduation course. Computer Science is definitely not an easy patch to go through but I am not going to give up even though I may fail at some classes. Thank you for sharing your story with us, and I am happy that you are okay now. I cannot wait to feel the same!

My story: I'm 16 and am juggling high school and community college while being a full year athlete and this quarter I am failing my college classes after having to go to Nationals for cheer, and breaking up with my long term boyfriend who was mentally abusive and toxic. My parents somehow have access to my college account and can see my grades so they've punished me by taking my tv, pc, phone, and friends away so I can focus only on school. They also have threatened sending me to my abusive father's house (my parents are divorced) or boarding school. They said if I don't pass my classes this quarter (which ends this month) then they would send me back to highschool which forces me to not be able to graduate with my class. I am overwhelmed and have basically given up at this point. I'm sharing my story because maybe someone is going through the same thing and also feels alone, or maybe someone has advice for me. Idk, just thought it'd be nice to get out :)
edit: I am a really good daughter, I don't vape or sneak out or do things I'm not supposed to. I do my chores and I listen to my parents and I rarely give them attitude, the one thing that makes me imperfect to my parents is the fact that I'm not booksmart and no one can change that.
edit 2: I am currently looking at 16 missing assignments in just my journalism class. btw - my stepdad doesn't let me choose my own classes which could be a huge reason I am failing... I don't understand journalism and in fact hate it.

The best thing is something called Quizlet.. College is an open book exam these days. Back in the 80s and 90s it was a nightmare. Piece of cake these days.

I work with a lot of women in college with ADHD. We don't see it through the lens of it being a limitation but rather it's giving us the blueprint for how your brain works and we work WITH the ADHD rather than seeing it as something we have to overcome.

@@sherocksatcollege I understand so I do take back what I said. I have been in a situation where I retook classes after already establishing a profile of straight As. They were due to time constraints more than anything. But I was at least at Cs and Bs at the time of withdrawal. I am myself concerned how people will perceive me retaking five classes in my four years transferred at uni and that's with already passing everything. I have accomplishments to back up what I have done. I am in the top 10 percent and a member of PKP.
