Sumdo to Tabo Road Trip - ভয়ঙ্কর Spiti Expedition by Car (Tata Punch) from Nako/Shimla - Part 18

A road trip from Sumdo to Tabo in a Tata Punch is a wonderful experience through the breathtaking Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The Tata Punch is well-suited for this journey with its compact SUV design and good ground clearance, which can handle challenging terrain.
This is part 18 of our Spiti road trip from Shimla where we are going to Tabo from Sumdo village.

The road condition from Sumdo to Tabo is really dangerous. The Spiti Valley is started from the Sumdo check post.
Distance and Travel Time
Distance: Approx. 50-60 km, depending on the route.
Travel Time: 2-3 hours, considering the mountainous roads and weather conditions.
Route Overview
Starting Point: Sumdo (located near the confluence of the Spiti and Pare Chu rivers, close to the India-Tibet border).
Route: Travel along NH 505, which follows the Spiti River. The road is scenic but narrow and rugged.
Destination: Tabo, known for the Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What to Expect on the Road
Road Conditions:
Mixed terrain with stretches of gravel, loose stones, and occasionally smooth patches.
Narrow roads with hairpin bends and steep inclines.
Possible water crossings or landslides, depending on the season.
Scenic Highlights:
Stunning views of the Spiti River valley.
Desert-like mountain landscapes with patches of greenery.
Small villages and Buddhist prayer flags along the route.
Driving Tips:
Drive cautiously and keep speeds low, especially around curves.
Check your vehicle's tire pressure, fuel level, and brakes before starting.
Carry a spare tire and basic tools, as roadside assistance may be scarce.
Avoid night driving due to poor visibility and challenging terrain.
Attractions in Tabo
Tabo Monastery: An ancient monastery with exquisite murals and stucco sculptures.
Meditation Caves: Historical caves used by monks for meditation, are located near the monastery.
Local Cuisine: Try Tibetan dishes like momos and thukpa.
