I'm a professional photographer myself (not a photojournalist however) so I take particular interest in these kinds of stories. I know it's only a 5 minute video, and Olmos neither directed or produced the video, so it may not have been his intention at all, but what was said, and the way it was edited suggested a subtext to me. For example, he was berated by an Israeli woman because she mistook him for being a Palestinian. So I'm an American, and I'm a photographer, and I have a European background. If I were to go to Palestine and try to do similar work as Olmos, would I be mistaken for an Israeli by Palestinians and berated like Olmos was? I think it'd be likely to happen at some point if I were there long enough. I only bring this up because sometimes people might hear his story and think, "Oh, Israelis are so racist and Islamophobic!" (the implication being that Palestinians are not bigoted). Sure, I'm certain plenty of Israelis are bigots. But racism and bigotry do not end at the Israeli/Palestinian border. This is an incredibly complicated situation, nothing is simple. This goes for the rest of the video. In the situation between Israel and Palestine, falling back on simple explanations of oppressor and oppressed, occupier and occupied, aggressor and victim, absolutely does not work to understand anything real about it.

I'm a professional photographer myself (not a photojournalist however) so I take particular interest in these kinds of stories. I know it's only a 5 minute video, and Olmos neither directed or produced the video, so it may not have been his intention at all, but what was said, and the way it was edited suggested a subtext to me. For example, he was berated by an Israeli woman because she mistook him for being a Palestinian. So I'm an American, and I'm a photographer, and I have a European background. If I were to go to Palestine and try to do similar work as Olmos, would I be mistaken for an Israeli by Palestinians and berated like Olmos was? I think it'd be likely to happen at some point if I were there long enough. I only bring this up because sometimes people might hear his story and think, "Oh, Israelis are so racist and Islamophobic!" (the implication being that Palestinians are not bigoted). Sure, I'm certain plenty of Israelis are bigots. But racism and bigotry do not end at the Israeli/Palestinian border. This is an incredibly complicated situation, nothing is simple. This goes for the rest of the video. In the situation between Israel and Palestine, falling back on simple explanations of oppressor and oppressed, occupier and occupied, aggressor and victim, absolutely does not work to understand anything real about it.
I went to University with a couple young vets like the kid in this video. They were real nice genuine people.

Likewise, other communities from Europe also joined both groups; Turks, Persians, Circassians joined indigenous communities of similar background, Jews from all over the world increasingly joined the indigenous Jewish communities. Both groups grew as did modern nationalist sentiment. The modern Zionist movement led to a Jewish homeland, and an Arab nationalism rose against British rule. Both communities had a chance to live together. The Arabs chose not to and launched war against the new state of Israel. We can now see the results of this war. And yes there were massacres of Jews by Arabs even before. And yes there were instances of massacres against Arabs during the war as well. That’s an after the fact issue which is of course to be condemned. Your lack of knowledge about the history of the region is incredibly one sided, biased, tongue and cheek slogans and a lack of understanding. May peace come to the entire region.
