I love these videos. I think it would be really cool to see some top-level asymmetrical duels too, saber vs longsword, longsword vs rapier, etc. Maybe you can talk them into it, Skall =)
Unfortunately full-contact sparring with greatswords is not really safe, they just hit too hard. For the same reason polearm sparring is not feasible either.
Wood is nasty when hit with, even on softer woods like pine and doesn't simulate weight effectively, unless it's weight in which case you effectively have a sword shaped club. (A great learning tool though as it better urges you to avoid harm at all costs, but that's debatable.) Synthetics use plastic or nylon and unfortunately can buckle or bend easier thanks to the square cube law. Even if they are made properly and won't bend, it will still deal a considerable amount of force especially is whipped instead of stricken.
***** you don't see it? I don't know if historically it looked the same, but here longsword sparring is just retarded! Both opponents hit each other 70% of the time!
It is something that we are actively trying to get rid of, but historically they were trying to get rid of it too. So, more or less we've been moving towards a solution for centuries, thankfully we have the chance to correct our mistakes when we get hit, they didn't have that luxury.
This video is absolutely great. I thought use of the longsword wouldn't be as effective, but now I think I'd add it to what I'd particularly learn given the opportunity. I live in a place, or country even, where HEMA couldn't probably reach. But thank you for this!
The longsword sparring was definately something I'd love to see as movie fights, pure awesomeness, for both HEMA enthusiasts and a regular In front of the TV screen popcorn eater.
These videos have reignited a years-dormant interest in fencing, though there are no more clubs around me now than there was back before the anxiety took the interest from me :(
Your best bet is to read manuals and get a friend interested that you can practice with... Its going to take longer to learn without a professional but good things don't come easy :D
yeah i never read manuals but i did watch a lot of HEMA vid on youtube, my brothers and i used to use them to beat each other up with sticks more efficiently, but if you have a friend or friends who are interested just pull up a chair watch some vids and practice a lot. Now i own a few swords and a full suit of Italian plate armor. just make sure that you use padding and other protections while sparring.
This is one of the more agressive sparing videos I've seen. It was interesging seeing sword+dagger combo in the works. it looks like there's a need for a lot of focus on what's your dagger - ed hand doing.
Joshua Hamilton In practice duels people tend to get more aggressive because if you hit them a hair before they hit you you get the point and they don't. In duels to the death people try very hard not to trade blows. But yes, both people could die.
Reese Pollock I will of course try it sooner or later, but right now, it doesn't suit me. Maybe because I am one of those filthy peasants, who can't appreciate the true elegance of rapier fencing :D (For anyone who didn't quite get it, that was a joke about historical nobles, who considered everyone being beneath them.)
Cara doesn't practice HEMA and would actually be more interested in Chinese sword fighting. It's difficult to find a school that teaches martially viable techniques with Chinese swords though, it's mostly just forms.
No wonder he's sometimes tired in some of these, I bet everyone loves to spar with him whenever they can. It's pretty awesome just to watch him work, but it must be something else altogether to spar with him
I really want to do this preferably not with a rapier but eh I love swords so much I (rather embarrassingly) play with toy swords all the time they're just so cool
From a spectator standpoint, rapiers seem too based in nuance to be all that interesting, sabers are always fun too watch, but not nearly as much as the longswords. The footwork involved makes Longsword fighting by far the most entertaining footage I've seen in HEMA. More of that plz.
Very nice footage! The fights are amazing, who is the guy with the blue and black greaves? He wrecked some carnage. Once I get better at smithing I shall make a longsword with an easily unscrewable pommel, so skalla senpai can finally end them rightly.
Interesting rapier footage, shows how useful a parrying dagger can be, not only for defense, but also for agression (binding with the dagger while attacking with the main blade). Can't really see any disadvantage over not having one.
Ty dude :) , I would love to learn martial arts , swords specially, but have no club or dujo anywhere near :s .. your videos are really helping :D love to see practices in clubs and such.
I think for a portion of the duelling, the white top with rounded shapes was putting him off - due a lack of covering armour and the changing shape and jiggling of said curvy-nesses moving with the duelists movements ahem.
I really enjoy seeing the contrast between teacher and student. Really show's how skilled he is. Who's the guy in the blue though? Seemed very good too.
I'm wanting to get into HEMA myself, thought the closest place that's an actual practice facility is too far away. (I'm 15 so my family would have to take me) I Love watching the longsword sparring, but I gotta say the rapier sparring is growing on me, very efficient looking. I would like to see more footage of the Longsword sparring, if possible, Skall.
Well, one slash, especially if just scraping, wouldn't result in immediate death. Though this kind of fight, without armour, would still probably be over in under a minute.
Well, I don't know. Most of the thrusts and cuts seem to land around the upper chest area, so it seems like you could easily cut or stab someone in the throat. Plus, at 2:30, I'd imagine being stabbed in the face would most certainly "end you rightly".
You don't necesserely need to achieve immediate death in order to win. Incapitating the oponnent (For example by injuring his primary hand) is enogh most of the time.
Well, it wouldn't be as fast as in this video, because the fight would continue to go on after one person gets hits. And a person can take quite a lot of beating before dying, which means that a duel to death would be a pretty messy and bloody affair. But yes, speed is very important in a sword fight
Longsword fighting definitely looks and sounds the best, I think it's the brutality of the cuts they land. You could cut some of the idle time and put it right in a movie without losing any of the action factor. Sabre looks pretty cool too, but the quick slash to the face is a lot less exciting then the massive longsword cuts.
...it's just so frustrating that we don't have any martial arts clubs here... I just want to practice like that so much we only have a small LARPing community (a total of about 250 people divided into like 30 people groups) and some small groups of reanactors (like 10 here and 12 there...) I just wish one of you would come here and start a club one day ^^
Thanks for this video, as always! I thoroughly enjoy them, everytime! BUT don't just tease us with, like, seconds of longsword sparring! I want more longswords, dang it! :) Oh well, I guess there is a reason why they seem to be so scarce in B&I.
We do tons of Longsword sparring! Just not a lot of it gets caught on Skall's camera. The official Blood and Iron channel has a bunch, check out or earlier sparring videos.
It would be cool if you make a video showing a wood weapon( if you have one).In fact in the video you made about weapons whit out steal a guy said he makes replics(i think he make maori's axe replic)and said he can make one for you if you wanted .Ps: Sorry for my bad english.
I love these videos. I think it would be really cool to see some top-level asymmetrical duels too, saber vs longsword, longsword vs rapier, etc. Maybe you can talk them into it, Skall =)
When we're out of tournament season, we may do something like that.
Greatsword vs bastard sword, I think that would be asymmetrical (?
Rapier vs everyone! hahaha
There's loads of that on the AHF channel.
greatsword vs foil..... yeah no never mind

Rapier combat looks so amazing. The finesse!!!
I would love to see greatsword sparring
Unfortunately full-contact sparring with greatswords is not really safe, they just hit too hard. For the same reason polearm sparring is not feasible either.
+Skallagrim Such a shame tho, it would be amazing to see polearm sparring...Guess they designed their weapons too well
Even with wood or synthetic sword?
Wood is nasty when hit with, even on softer woods like pine and doesn't simulate weight effectively, unless it's weight in which case you effectively have a sword shaped club. (A great learning tool though as it better urges you to avoid harm at all costs, but that's debatable.)
Synthetics use plastic or nylon and unfortunately can buckle or bend easier thanks to the square cube law. Even if they are made properly and won't bend, it will still deal a considerable amount of force especially is whipped instead of stricken.
Voldeshot 2
Yes. Both wooden and synthetic greatswords could break bone.
damn the last few 2 handed sword fights were great, more of those if possible please.
I don't see how 2.5 half seconds struggle resulting in a double is great!
***** thanks man
***** you don't see it? I don't know if historically it looked the same, but here longsword sparring is just retarded! Both opponents hit each other 70% of the time!
It is something that we are actively trying to get rid of, but historically they were trying to get rid of it too. So, more or less we've been moving towards a solution for centuries, thankfully we have the chance to correct our mistakes when we get hit, they didn't have that luxury.
***** I only appreciate more smooth and drawn out matches. I never meant that it involves less skill, I beg you!
I love seeing these sparring/competition videos. Thank you for posting them. Makes me want to learn the saber :)
The only place without R1 spammers.
the only place where longswords are two handed.
+Dank Meister Panda well you can 2 hand a longsword.
+Dank Meister Panda Umm
Yup
and no estocs
This video is absolutely great. I thought use of the longsword wouldn't be as effective, but now I think I'd add it to what I'd particularly learn given the opportunity. I live in a place, or country even, where HEMA couldn't probably reach. But thank you for this!
Though i dont know a lot about sword sparring and HEMA, I think I have to say Sabre sparring is the most fun to watch.
It is definitely the most audience-friendly.
I've seen some really cool rapier sparring before, its really fun to watch when they use the guard more actively
***** I get the feeling that it's a lot more exciting to those that know anything about it, which isn't me haha.
it's really fluid, but I liked the longswords the best
longsword is the best for me but sabre sparring really looks graceful
Can you give us a tour of the blood and iron building because it seems pretty cool. It can just be like 30 camera pane of you want.
great idea
You should ask that to the Blood and Iron HEMA channel (they have their own youtube)
noice
Very NOIIICE!
that's not a noice
Noiiice
+Papagenu that's not how you spell noise either, so well done mate
^*CLICK*^
European long sword fighting is fucking awesome!!
Yeah, man, those double deaths are quite fine, I admit
X Infinity but also, giving a little flex to reduce stress on powerfull thrusts. It can't be made out of pure martensite
These are training versions. The increased flex is to ironically protect the person getting 'stabbed' by them.
Saber sparring is a ton of fun to watch, i love the different stances.
I'd love to see more long sword sparring, that was great :) But I like all your HEMA-videos.
Always a joy watching a long sword duel.
always nice to see these videos showing the techniques in action
The longsword sparring was definately something I'd love to see as movie fights, pure awesomeness, for both HEMA enthusiasts and a regular In front of the TV screen popcorn eater.
These videos have reignited a years-dormant interest in fencing, though there are no more clubs around me now than there was back before the anxiety took the interest from me :(
man, it sucks not living near anywhere to learn
Your best bet is to read manuals and get a friend interested that you can practice with... Its going to take longer to learn without a professional but good things don't come easy :D

Now i own a few swords and a full suit of Italian plate armor. just make sure that you use padding and other protections while sparring.
while I didn't do HEMA I did do fencing, and i feel your pain of not being able to practice anymore
You'd be surprised. If there really isn't anywhere to go and get instruction, start a group yourself.

more longsword sparring plz. That shit was epic to watch
This is very amazing to watch
These vids make me realise how often an actual swordfight would end with both people bleeding out due to pretty nasty lacerations
Joshua Hamilton In practice duels people tend to get more aggressive because if you hit them a hair before they hit you you get the point and they don't. In duels to the death people try very hard not to trade blows. But yes, both people could die.
I really like saber fights, they are super smooth
Thanks a lot forsharing, it's amazing to watch! :D Although Mardsen's family jewel protector creeps me out to no end D:
More longsword sparring please, looks awesome
Saber sparring looks amazing!
More Longsword fights please. Less rapiers.
the discussion of the word "noice" was my favorite part of this video.
This phoenix instructor guy is ridiculously amazing with the rapier
4:55 those legs are blinding! love the sparring matches btw
Never clicked faster
I love these practice videos !
those last exchanges were really agresive, almost as flashy as in movies, but still 100% more efective that's for sure :D
By this footage, I have confirmed, that I don't like rapier fencing. On the other hand, I love the saber and longsword sparing.
It's not for everyone, but don't knock it till you try it. It's a whole other game compared to longsword even when you're new.
I think longsword sparring looks like the most fun.
I really like it, but it's definitely less flashy than saber and longsword. No doubt about it.
It's definitely not as exciting to watch.
YES!!! MOAR LONGSWORD SPARRING!!!!!
4:20 Haha, love that casual looking dodge into the direct head shot.
this looks to be a lot of fun
Saber and Longsword looked a lot more badass to watch :)
Cara(or whoever that woman was) in that armor looks like someone's dark souls character halfway through the game. Pretty badass
Cara doesn't practice HEMA and would actually be more interested in Chinese sword fighting. It's difficult to find a school that teaches martially viable techniques with Chinese swords though, it's mostly just forms.
We need more Arming Sword sparring in this world .
2:39 n0ice
Also we need more sabre sparring vids - they look epic
I am sure everyone has their preference but i find longsword fights to be the most elegant and aesthetically pleasing.
I love that you needed to show the 2 one in the mirror
No wonder he's sometimes tired in some of these, I bet everyone loves to spar with him whenever they can. It's pretty awesome just to watch him work, but it must be something else altogether to spar with him
Would love to give that a go, never done sword play or fencing before, but I was also thinking of taking up archery, now I'm not sure.
I really want to do this preferably not with a rapier but eh I love swords so much I (rather embarrassingly) play with toy swords all the time they're just so cool
Love the sparring action
From a spectator standpoint, rapiers seem too based in nuance to be all that interesting, sabers are always fun too watch, but not nearly as much as the longswords. The footwork involved makes Longsword fighting by far the most entertaining footage I've seen in HEMA. More of that plz.

Once I get better at smithing I shall make a longsword with an easily unscrewable pommel, so skalla senpai can finally end them rightly.
That's Tony Huang, one of our top guys.
I think what we see here is the fact that more skill beats more weapons.
More longsword sparring videos please!
I always adore rapier fencing :)
I would like to see R.Marsden armed with saber fighting against rapier.
I wish I could do these things as a hobby but unfortunately I dont know any placr near me that would allow that to happen.
Andrej Dobrić same
I think for a portion of the duelling, the white top with rounded shapes was putting him off - due a lack of covering armour and the changing shape and jiggling of said curvy-nesses moving with the duelists movements ahem.
Please do a Roman Shield review, I'd very much like to learn how to use one properly.
I really enjoy seeing the contrast between teacher and student. Really show's how skilled he is. Who's the guy in the blue though? Seemed very good too.
That would be Tony. He's one of our fight team members and is quite good indeed :)
Man, this video is in need of a pounding metal soundtrack
Long sword sparring are the best
I'm wanting to get into HEMA myself, thought the closest place that's an actual practice facility is too far away. I would like to see more footage of the Longsword sparring, if possible, Skall.
Rapier is the king of the 1v1 for a reason :)
not to shamelessly plug, but the official blood and Iron channel has tons of longsword sparring.
So that what profesional sword fighting looks like :O im sure you need really good reflexes and quiet some endurance.
More longsword please!
Need a shirt with the motto "Carpe Jugulum" on it. It loosely translates to "Go for the throat."
Thats why movie fights are not realistc. Unarmored fighting is done in mere seconds. Interisting to watch!

Xenon True, true. Being merciful would most likely be, well, the most likely option for most people.
Especially for polish nobles, who didn't want to horribly kill each other, for fear of being sued. XD
Boy did you just say noice? Noice
SWEET!!!
Sword fighting, I would imagine, had to have been a quick and brutal affair
Quick and brutal, indeed. It wouldn't have been uncommon to see singles ended in three or four strokes, with any number of results.
Well, it wouldn't be as fast as in this video, because the fight would continue to go on after one person gets hits. And a person can take quite a lot of beating before dying, which means that a duel to death would be a pretty messy and bloody affair. But yes, speed is very important in a sword fight
That's what I figure..it just seems logical. Hollywood seems to think otherwise xD
How much would your garden variety medieval longsword weigh?
+ny_kia31 anywhere from 4-8 pounds, usually.
MOAR SPARRING VIDS PLZ
Noice video Skall
Longsword fighting definitely looks and sounds the best, I think it's the brutality of the cuts they land. You could cut some of the idle time and put it right in a movie without losing any of the action factor. Sabre looks pretty cool too, but the quick slash to the face is a lot less exciting then the massive longsword cuts.
Nah I disagree, tbh I love sidesword and broadsword fencing. Longsword fencing looks clumsy to me (I know it's not, but It's just not as elegant).
this is amazing
Oh I love saber fights.
wow ! 4:19 that was neat
...it's just so frustrating that we don't have any martial arts clubs here... I just want to practice like that so much
we only have a small LARPing community (a total of about 250 people divided into like 30 people groups) and some small groups of reanactors (like 10 here and 12 there...)
I just wish one of you would come here and start a club one day ^^
Skal, will you do an episode about the history of the Polish saber?
Thanks for this video, as always! I thoroughly enjoy them, everytime!
BUT don't just tease us with, like, seconds of longsword sparring! I want more longswords, dang it! :) Oh well, I guess there is a reason why they seem to be so scarce in B&I.

+Julian Schuetze Thanks, I sure will!
i love these
Could you please make a video about bayonet fighting? It's so hard to get good information on it, and you've never done one.
The lady at 2:07 has excellent footwork.
I love longsword sparring :o
It would be cool if you make a video showing a wood weapon( if you have one).In fact in the video you made about weapons whit out steal a guy said he makes replics(i think he make maori's axe replic)and said he can make one for you if you wanted .Ps: Sorry for my bad english.
Damn, rapier man is really good
Who is the saberist in the blue? He was owning it quite gracefully.
Can we get an edit of this video replacing all red circles with call of duty hitmarkers and sounds?
Doesn't getting poked with those rapiers hurt? They didn't seem to be wearing body protection, and the rapiers didn't seem to bend a lot.
i still wat to see some binding
1:35 was just a slap!
Skallagrim CAN YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE WITCHER ?
So.. what kind of schools teach this? I would love to learn to use a saber like that (and competition actually look pretty awesome).
I wish somebody tried to yell at his opponent "behind you!", right before attacking, that would be fun.
He is going to seriously damage his knee if he keeps doing lunges like that.
The building is a lot smaller than I imagined, a empty gym would of been a lot better imo
1:20, there goes the ascending colon.
realy awesome bro fist at ~ 4:48 . It's always *noice* to see good sportsmanship (not that it would be uncommon in respectable martial arts anyways)
Please do a vidoe on a Cinquedia
Unless its that style where you can grab the sword.
i request sidesword vs longsword please... or vs saber
Where did he get that dumb skull codpiece thing? I want one, it's cool.
I think you can just, paint it?
Artur Mizuno I'm talking about the belt buckle, not the mask.
