I recently chose to get the Ontario sp10 over the sp5. I figured the sp10 is more like a camping multi-tool. Not only is it the knife you want against a bear, it can also stab, dig, slash, hammer, chisel, and pry. But is excels as a wood chopper, which is the only real reason to carry a 1/4 inch chunk of steel. The sp5 doesn't have the weight, the hand guard, nor the shape to chop as effectively. Unlike the sp10, the sp5 has a tip sharpened on both ends. Having the drop point on the back of the knife sharp makes the tip more fragile, it damages whatever you baton with, and prevents you from choking way up on the knife for detailed work.
I have been using an SP10 for 23 years. No failures and I have literally batoned a tree stump to pieces with it while using a log to hit it with. Log broke not the knife. Ontario knives were different back then. Got another SP10 a few years ago. Gave it away-not the same knife. Just picked up an SP5-95 original from 20 years ago. Same quality as My 1st SP10
I recently got a sp10 at a local big box sporting goods shop. It came in a clamb pack. For what ever reason, the handle is not molded correctly. It works but it's definitely deformed. I'm keeping it. Too much hassle to send it back. 👍👍⚓⚓🇺🇲🇺🇲
it's bad when they don’t take the time to fix the handle before putting it in a box to be sold. it shouldn't be too hard to fix that. yes, returning stuff is a hassle.
The thinner blade still uses the same spine thickness of steel and likely the same heat treatment. I believe both would be fine for chopping and not much different from each other. The SP5 is just a lighter style Bowie blade shape. I would not mind having either one.🐯🙂
Hi Williams knife life! I have been looking for the Ontario SP5 for years now. I had one as a young adult and it was my favorite knife but unfortunately there was an accident on one of our camping trips and the knife got lost. I have been searching for one ever since. Are you willing by any chance to sell me the SP5?
Sorry, but I can't part with it. I can't find it on Amazon anymore & the ones on Ebay are going for around 70 dollars when they appear, which isn't often anymore. The SP5 is a great knife & it's a shame that it's not being made anymore. Maybe some company will reintroduce the design?
@@WilliamsKnifeLife I understand. I wouldn’t want to sell mine if I had one either. I really hope that either Ontario or another company brings this knife back to the market because they are very good knives to have.
@cameronlambert9723 Here is one on eBay being bid on now. I think they are asking a lot for them, but supply and demand drives up cost when the supply runs out. www.ebay.com/itm/196258696096?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=nNXUsVCcQpS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=7yot9H2zQq2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
This SP5 KNIFE is a Great Knife I have many Blades...Kabar. Coldsteel. Tops and more. But this Knife this ONTARIO SP5 is right up there with the Kabar BK9 Knife...its as Good if not Better...I am Telling Everyone this is a Great Survival Blade...I have Coldsteel Trailmaster..a TOPS ARMAGEDDON and the Kabar BK 9 Blade...and this ONTARIO SP5 Is just as Good.as them other blade I mentioned...my only thing that bugs me is I only Got 1... Knife...because they stoped making them...if you didn't get 1 you missed out...on a Great Blade
The Commies in China getting hungry again. The spine on the SP5 is so thick, you could use it as a hammer. While the SP10 has a saber grind, the SP5 has a full flat grind, which makes it more versatile in use. Think food prep. Either one is a beast to recon with. Thank you for showing William.
Thanks for showing them to us, I love that Bowie style blade.
this one is really nice.
Thanks for the share of the Ontario large knives. Thanks for your American support 😉. Sorry you blew your budget (that's American too!)
🤣 Thank you Byron 👍
I would say you spent your knife budget wisely. lol Great knives, buddy. Cheers!
Thank you David 👍

Ontario knives are great knives! I've always had good luck with them!
They are decent knives.
I really like the SP line. I've got the SP6. Very nice 👌
They do make some nice knives in that SP line.
The sp5 is great as a small machete, Great idea of the baby kangaroo knife.
Thank you Jose

It's a shame when they make a knife not as well as they did before .
I love Ontario there knives are great for the money.
Thank you Jeremy. 👍
check the back of the label of your SP5 sheath, it says "sp53”. right?
Yep 👍

It is lighter than the SP10. I think you can't go wrong with either one.
Fierce cutlery.

I like it. The SP10 is more of a chopper, but it's also heavier. The SP5 will chop also. It is too bad they went out of business.
sp5 the best chopper anyway
It is easier to swing.
@@WilliamsKnifeLife OH YES
I like that SP5. I need to get one... Great Video. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Thank you. They are nice and usually at a decent price.
The blades break because of the stress that is being applied to the steel. Knives are not made to chop bricks and steel bars or pipes.👍👍⚓⚓🇺🇲🇺🇲
i agree Dave. 👍
