    Zuko and Azula's relationship is *extremely* complicated. I think at the end of the day, they do have love for each other, but due to how they were raised, it's impossible for the two of them to coexist with one another.

      I think they love eachother but they both acknowledge that they have to put it aside due to their ideals. Zuko and Azula just can't both be on one side and so they fight eachother, no matter how unconfortable for them it is

      I feel like they are genuine times between the two. Like when azula tells zuko not to visit Iroh and be careful, I feel like she actually meant that based on her body language.

      In the comics it was made clear that Zuko loved Azula very much, and it was implied that Azula may have returned a little bit of affection towards Zuko but was just too broken to express any of it.

      @@NoOne0527 well the fact that she said "Be careful dumb-dumb" implies that she knows he might continue doing so and didn't talk him out of it and only for him to be careful not to get caught by anyone.
      Kinda like a sibling telling another to be careful when they sneak out the house. And since she gained Litterally nothing for people to believe that he's conspiring with Iroh is a good enough example that she was genuinely trying to keep him out of trouble

      Which is exactly why so many people reject her character. If you take the time to read between the lines, you’ll find she and Zuko actually have a lot more in common than you realize.
      Remember, they’re both teenagers. Kids. I don’t really see anyone encourage true emotional attachments in the Fire Nation, or at the very least, show affection externally to their significant others. Keep in mind that Zuko’s mom didn’t want to marry Ozai in the first place, she was forced to. Even if Ursa had grown up with him like Mai had with Zuko, she still would not have wanted to marry Ozai.
      The teens, especially Mai and Zuko, have been repressing their emotions down because they’ve been told it’s not appropriate or seen as scandalous. And since Mai’s father is a well-known political figure, a scandal about his only daughter caught in a romantic trist with the crown prince definitely looks bad on his part.
      Does Mai still have her problems? Yes. But nobody is perfect. Especially when you’re from the most hated nation in the world. Neither are Ty Lee or Azula or even Zuko. They all have their quirks and pet peeves. But more than that, they’re human as well.
      This is my opinion, so keep it kind pls and thank you.

    10:48 That scene between Zuko and Azula made me a fan of Azula. Not like a fan that hopes she wins and defeats the Aang gang, but a fan that finally understands her character. She's a terrible person without a doubt. But for a few moments, her voice is soft, almost sad, when she says, "I thought I'd find you here." She listens to what Zuko says and even looks at the house for a moment as if she's remembering it all. "Come down to the beach with me. Come on, this place is depressing." Something can't really depress you unless you have feelings about it. Then, the whole "my own mother thought I was a monster". This episode does a lot to humanize the villains. That's why I can't hate it as much as some people. I know for many, this was a terrible episode. Not for me though.

      @32287489543 it can feel a little forced, and the cringey teen angst is strong with this one. I like the episode, but even so, rewatching the bonding sesh at the end can feel like rushed development. It all happens so fast, with problems brought up and resolved soo quickly. It just feels like a bunch of insufferable teens whining at each other. Because it is. It's still good tho, as it does bring context to ozais angels. The best part of the episode is zikos angry at myself bit tho, because that was a problem that has been festering for awhile, so it's satisfying when it's resolved. I loved this episode the first time I saw it, and it's lost its luster with each viewing. Unlike the rest of the show with is amazing every time.

      This is my favorite episode! Not only humanizing the enemy but showing that truly you are a product of your upbringing. Everybody was who they were because of the easy their families were built. People complaining about teenage angst, they had no childhood. They were warriors, and political elites that even as children had to act appropriately, something adults struggle with. It shows that even in a country attacking the rest of the world, the children are traumatized in their own right, at a young age Azula had to excel well beyond everybody else to get even a bit of her father's approval. Growing up that amplified, and built her entire personality especially her ruthlessness and perfectionist attitude. This is more explored in the avatar mangas.

Especially since the more loving parent was incredibly hard on her. Plus you have to remember Zuko didn't turn out great either a lot of why he has good in him is due to his Uncle's influence on him otherwise he probably wouldn't have turned out that different than Azula.

      Her father was the more 'loving' parent I thought, and he doesn't really do love. Her normal parent (mum) did not love or trust her kid, all that makes for f-ed up kids. All in all, I don't think many children could have survived a childhood like Zuko and Azula had, and still come out okay at the other end. The only reason Zuko is not like his sister is because of his mum caring for him and making sure he was normal-ish, and his uncle trying to keep him on the straight and narrow. Azula being a such a good firebender is what made Ozai pay attention to her, and inflict his 'parenting' on her. It's at least in part what made her who she is.

      Well, she is a sociopath via nurture rather than nature. As a kid she was indoctrinated and emotionally abused by her father, while her mother left her in the dirt to care for Zuko.
      She is still only 14 years old for fuck's sake. Azula is a victim of her upbringing. I believe that qualifies her for sympathy.

    • @rickj5180
      @rickj5180 7 лет назад +10

      ingenjannik I love this idiotic argument that Ursa basically neglected her. There is NOTHING in the series that says that. The only thing that's actually stated or shown is that Ursa was closer to Zuko because his dad was PHYSICALLY abusive and ACTUALLY neglected him, and she thought Azula was a monster, which she was. She tortured animals for fun. There is NOTHING to suggest Ursa didn't try and help her too. And where does it end genius? Ozai's father was an evil man who favored Iroh and wanted Ozai to murder his son, his own grandson. So does Ozai deserve sympathy? Because it's almost the exact same situation. When do personal responsibility and choices come into play? Yeah, Azula had an evil man for a father. Did it help her? No. But no, it's not all her parents fault she was a sadist from a young age. And again, if Azula deserves soooooo much sympathy, Ozai does too.

    I don´t think Zuko is an typical "emo". He is just in a deep phase of discovering what he is and what he wants. He is not emotionless, in fact he clearly has emotions and shows them. Mai has more likely an emo-personality...

    The firelord took Azula under his wing much more than Zuko because she was a firebending prodigy. Zuko wasn't. Ozai saw power in azula, and he used it, and I feel like he twisted her into a sadistic person. Wouldn't be surprised if he was seeing his own dynamic with his brother in his children, and it's plain to see Zuko was more like his mother Ursa while Azula was more like Ozai. He was grooming her for the throne since she was a small child, shaping her to fit his idea of power and strength. TL;DR: Azula's disposition isn't because she's naturally a evil (sociopath perhaps?) it's a result of the way she was "raised", though I hesitate to use that term

      If she was a prodigy then who won the agni ki? Zuko would've won if Azula didn't cheat. What happened to Zuko is a result of Iroh in a way since Azulan (Ozai's father and the firelord) wanted ozai to pay the same price Iroh did by losing his son in the war. Ozai, with no regrets, punished Zuko as a result of his thirst for the throne and his father demands. It's probably why Ozai went through with Ursa's plan to poison Azulan and become firelord.

      @@Eventzz0 I read this a few days ago.
      Azula is the kid that at 4 or 5 years old is told they are gifted. Their parents push them because they believe they're special. Then around 15 or 16 when the kids that work hard can catch up they start hitting their first walls while trying to still be better than everyone else, while everyone else is use to walls. So its extremely hard for them to break through.
      Basically when she started running into the gaang in book 3 she wasn't special anymore, or the strongest. The agni kai loss was just the cherry on top. Zukos hard work finally paid off.

    • @LycanFerret
      @LycanFerret 4 года назад +4

      @@SeraphSeph 100% accurate. It's a really fucked up experience to go from thinking you're the best at a young age, then suddenly you hit like 13-15 and you get outclassed and hit all these walls of things you just don't understand. Social skills, happy life experiences, and more normal kid bondings that you just threw away at a young age in pursuit of the perfection you were always told you were. Then you see those you looked down upon handling these things with ease while also surpassing you at what you prided yourself in and it stresses you out inside, but to look cool you just turn that stress into hate and you push everything including your future away. And like with every character that has ever described me - I hated them as a kid. I could see their imperfections because I knew mine and hated them as I have/had no idea how to fix them.

    This episode really shows how much Zuko and Azula are a product of their environment. As a young child we saw that Azula was kinda cruel but not more than some normal kids then Ozai favored Azula and twisted her into a weapon. Zuko on the other hand was punished for doing the right thing and was very isolated however eventually he left the sphere of control of his abuser (ozai) and iroh managed to guide him. Azula did terrible things but she also never got the help that she needed.

    • @pcrassen4975
      @pcrassen4975 4 года назад +2

      True. Albeit she was definitely a mean kid so to speak, but a good deal of kids are more mean than the others but eventually, with right teaching from parents, grow out of it and can even turn out as very empathetic people in life. But instead of that, she had Ozai to praise her for bad behavior and for looking down on others, which shaped her into the bloodthirsty cold person that we know. Someone obsessed with being on top and convinced that fear is stronger than love.
      She crumbled when that worldview was not just challenged, but proven wrong. She believed fear was the only way, cuz that's what she saw. Her grandfather, her father etc. Her uncle crumbled during the war on ba sing se because of his love for his son and his grief. She believed her mother feared her and didn't love her. Then Ursa killed Azulon and went into exile because of her love for Zuko. She left both of them, out of her love for Zuko as far as Azula would've been concerned (even though we know she was going to take both of her children away from Ozai to save them, she DID love Azula, she just didn't understand her and didn't know how to respond to her the way she did with Zuko).
      But then comes the final blow. Mai's betrayal. "you miscalculated. I love Zuko, more than I fear you". To Azula this is the exact situation that her mother did to her. Since she believed that Ursa feared her, to her thinking that she loved Zuko more is a logical conclusion. And now Mai threw those ideals straight in her face. And then seconds later, Ty Lee displayed the same thing because she saw Mai standing up to Azula for the first time in their lives, and it would make Ty Lee see that they don't have to fear Azula. They don't have to obey her. And the moment Ty Lee saw that, she stood by her actual friend's side as well.
      Two people whom Azula tried to control through fear, just proved her entire worldview wrong. Which started her downward spiral. She kept clinging to that ideal, yet she kept sending away every one of her followers, the dai li, everything, out of paranoia. Even if she denied it, she knew now, that no matter how much she makes people fear her, it isn't a guarantee that they'll obey her anymore.
      And so.. in the end she was alone. Her father threw her to the side. Her friends chose each other and Zuko over her. Zuko had strength, had friends, had love in the end. He was lucky to be born, yet he had everything in the end, while she had nothing.

    Bending works through your Chakra. The guru named each one and their flow. This metal guy uses an advance form of bending. It is like lighting bending, but uses the Chakra in your stomach directly instead of having energy go through it like redirecting lighting. He gets the energy through his breath, then forces it out through constricting his stomach.

    Normies, I am not sue about your feelings about parenting but a mother showing that much distain for a child is appalling. Azula was a bad egg and thrived on getting on Zuko's case all the time. She would bug him and he would complain to his mom who already wasn't too keen on Azula. Azula was a prodigy when she was a toddler and Ozai abandoned his son as soon as it was clear Azula was better than Zuko. But for Ursa to show that much dislike, that her child grows up thinking of herself as a monster, thus feeling she might as well fulfill that label, was wrong. So she kept getting closer to her father and trying to emulate him in all things, including making Zuko's like miserable. Also Azula was jealous of Zuko being a boy, thus was more likely to gain power and the throne.Ursa and Ozai wee not seeing eye to eye over their children. So they grew up as rivals instead of siblings. But to be honest I still feel, all these years later, that Azula doesn't always lie. Azula wants to put Zuko down to make herself feel better and she will throw him under the bus if needed, but a few times in the series her advice for him wasn't bad.

      Zarola Ursa did care about Azula. She thought of Azula the way she did because of Azula‘s actions. Naturally she is going to give Zuko more attention because he already was neglected by pretty much everyone. Don’t try to paint Ursa to be the bad guy when there is nothing we can go off on. From what we know Azula already had these tendencies from a very young age. You make it sound like Ursa made her a monster wich ain’t the truth. I know your comment is old btw.

    With Azula, I feel that she has more depth that what we have seen of her (I have watched the entire series 3 times, and I love Azula (Toph also)). From this episode, you can gather that Azula and her mom had a very strained relationship. So without her mother who would she have gone to, oh right, the other member of the family that encouraged her (her father). If her father burned Zuko for just speaking out, not even directly to him, imagine what he would do to his daughter if she did not live up to his expectations, she is a 'prodigy' after all. Also look at how Ozai acts and then look at Azula, if she was raised mainly by her father, who acts very cruel, dangerous, powerfull, etc. You would see a lot of similarities, Ozai raised her from a very young age to be a weapon. So seeing her trying to act like a normal child makes me feel pity for her.
    I promise, once you get to the end of the series you will feel sorry for her. (Then again I am a huge Azula fan)
    Also I love your reactions.

    Azula wasn't a bad egg from the beginning. Their mom was forced into the marriage, she thought Ozai was a monster and tried to protect and love Zuko, but this led to her not being able to give poor Azula enough attention, drawing her to Ozai and making her feel like a fighting machine instead of loved :(((

    Its a very rare and specialized form of fire bending (called "combustion bending") where the bender completely focuses their chi into shooting highly concentrated energy blasts. It is very powerful but also involves a lot of risk to the bender. If they don't completely focus their chi the blast can happen inside (or very near) the bender's head.

    I wish you guys would release two episodes for Avatar a week. It makes sense with new shows like Thrones or Rick and Morty being weekly but Avatar has been done for years and even Kora has been done too.

    Something I just realized is that the area where Aang fights Combustion Man is like a smaller version of the final battle arena. So in a messed up sort of way, Zuko sending him after Aang helped him train for the final battle.

    During Zuko's brief flashbacks, there is one with Iroh holding a baby/toddler (who presumably is Zuko) and there is also a kid with them. That kid was Lu Ten (Iroh's son). Its a nice touch that they put him in there, many people might not even notice.
    I make videos about Avatar, if anyone is interested.

    Hahaha, Suraj loves to highlight Nahid's 'I think' reactions. Also #TyLeeThick! Aso, even though the action was limited in this episode, it was still very well choreographed! Kudos to the people behind action scenes, they always find ways to get creative with bending routines.

    I'm always surprised when people are confused about the terminator's bending, like it's clearly an explosion, so my first thought on my first watch of A:TLA was well duh, combustion=heat=firebending

  • @deadgir6653
    @deadgir6653 7 лет назад

    The guy chasing Aang and the others is a special type of Fire bender called a combustion bender. He literally bends explosions thanks to that eye tattoo. It also requires immense amounts of focus and really good aim which is why he takes a deep breath before blasting someone.

    Three years late but two interesting but little details to note.
    We've seen Aang's wound on his back from Azula's lightning. But here we saw an identical wound on the bottom of his foot. Whe lightning strikes, it grounds through the fastest route. Ang was hit in the back, so the lightning went out of his body through his feet, burning it along with his back.
    Then there's Zuko. We've seen Zuko shirtless back in book 1 and he was RIPPED as hell. In this episode he is extremely scrawny with ribs showing. He starved for months after he and Iroh became fugitives on the run while in the Earth Kingdom. Which would lead to him losing a lot of his muscle mass due to not being able to intake enough food to maintain it, thus explaining his way skinnier frame in book 3.
