They don’t put the full price on the sticker because different counties a mile away from each other can have different taxes. different states and counties vary on price, so just adding it at the cash register and mass producing price tags for shops nationwide is easier than individually pricing everything

The tax in the US is much lower in the Uk as well, with 6% in my area. $1=0.06 cents. It doesn't really bother anyone as you don't calculate exactly when you are shopping around until you reach the cashier.

@@Ra111denIn the city where i live we have a 10% sales tax. It was 8% before 2004. The county tax is only 4%. From what I learned the mayor then wanted the sales tax higher to fund the downtown revitalization projects. The Riverfront park, baseball stadium and other things.
Edit: but I'm not sure if that's true.
Maybe it was for additional revenue.

While it can be difficult to keep up with updating price tags. It's also just because there's no laws requiring store to include tax, so they're going to put the lower looking price. Though I imagine every time someone tries to pass a law requiring the inclusion of sales tax somewhere, it probably doesn't pass for that reason.

All you have to remember is that the U.S. has no national sales tax. Therefore, sales tax is left up to the individual states which will then have the option to delegate sales tax to their respective counties and sometimes even to the individual cities. The state that I live in has a statewide sales tax of 6%. There is no tax on food unless it has been cooked by the supermarket. All food sales in restaurants are taxed.

Supermarkets originated in the U.S. around 1930, and we still call them supermarkets, or grocery stores. Walmart is more like a superstore because it sells more than food - like electronics, clothes, sports gear, car accessories, etc. There are some very small stores/sometimes a bank at the front of Walmart, but they're not a significant part of the store.

      @SeanShimamoto 3 года назад

I’ve watched this video so many times today! Zaddy is next level sexy, ∴ I’m not ashamed to admit q
Thanks, Bobbi, I was a bit confused when Lawrence said that Brits say “supermarket” & we say “grocery store” ‘cause I know we (me & my home state’s citizens) may say some things differently from y’all in the other 49 states, but I’ve heard a lot of American’s say supermarket.
After having watched half of the video, I think it’s a weird comparison ‘cause it sounds like he’s comparing grocery stores/supermarkets (“GSS”) and superstores. I think of GSS as being places like Safeway, Trader Joes, Vons, ShopRite, etc. where they primarily sell foods/beverages but also some basic things we need in our homes like rubbish bags, light bulbs, pens, markers, brooms, mops, buckets, etc. But superstores have GSS INSIDE of them and makes up maybe 25% of the entire layout, with the other 75% being a wide array of clothing, bedding, home decor, electronics, automotive, sporting goods and apparel, jewelry, animal/pet supplies, stationary, etc. and these include places like Walmart, Costco, and Sam’s Club.
I think sometimes the Brits forget just how massive the disparity between the UK and US is in terms of population...but also in terms of geography. There are, literally, almost 5 times as many ppl in the US as there are in the UK. For perspective, California & Texas, combined, have 2 million more people than the entire United Kingdom...that’s 69M to 67M. California has 2M more ppl than all of Canada, 39M to 37M. Texas has 3M more ppl than all of Australia. We have so many people in the US that the country of Sweden, which has 10.1M people, would be our 10th most populated state! But even in terms of geography, the United Kingdom is 94K sq mi...which would be our 12th biggest state. AK is 7.07x bigger than the UK, TX is 2.85x bigger, CA 1.75x bigger, MT 1.56x bigger, NM 1.29x bigger, AZ 1.21x bigger, NV 1.18x bigger, CO 1.10x bigger, OR 1.04x bigger, WY 1.04x bigger, MI 1.02x bigger. As a whole, the US is 3,797K sq mi while the UK is 94K sq mi....that’s 40 times as much land, and supplying 5 times as many people. So, naturally, we’re going to have large selections and larger stores. Imagine if the entire European Union decided to have EU supermarkets and superstores...with the 440M people in the EU, they’d probably have selections and options as massive as we do. I dunno, I just don’t think population and geography can be ignored. That would be like me complaining we don’t have a Trader Joe’s, IKEA, or Olive Garden here...but we have a whopping 1.4M people which ranks us at No.40, and we rank No.47 in terms of land size (we’re No.43 in total area, but there’s a lot of water between our 8 plots of land. LOL!). So when 38 states have more ppl and 46 states are bigger than us...and the closest state is 2,500 miles away, why would those companies spend all that money to build stores here and pay to have their goods shipped out into the middle of the Pacific just to break even? 🤣😂 Size matters. 😜
Anyway, I hope u and ur ohana are staying safe and healthy during this pandemic! Sending y’all lotsa love and aloha from Honolulu! 😁🤙🏽❤️🌈☀️ (Hawai’i symbols)
PS - So at what point did you figure out where my home state was? Oh yeah, one of the things that all of my mainland friends have told me that we say but none of them say, these are friends from all over the country, is “rubbish”. They all think it’s weird that we call them “rubbish cans” or “rubbish bins”...they all say “trash” or “garbage”. But if you look at the Hawai’i state flag, you’ll see another country’s flag in it...and that country says “rubbish” too, as well as “brilliant”, “fancy”, and “reckon”. In the early 1800s, the Hawaiian monarchy would travel to London to study at University. In fact, in 1887, Princess Liliu’okalani attended Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee as the representative of the Hawaiian monarchy as her brother, King David Kalākaua could not attend...4 years later, in 1891, she would become Hawai’i’s first, and last Queen...as we, America, staged a coup an overthrew the Hawaiian Gov’t and the Hawaiian monarchy & incarcerated Queen Liliu’okalani in 1893. Since we, America, annexed Hawai’i just 5 years later, historians have said it’s clear that we were protecting our investments in Hawai’i...do I think it was abhorrent? Absolutely. Does that mean I hate being American? A resounding no; I love my country and my family’s been here since 1868. All it means is that this is my little way of letting my compatriot get a glimpse into a part of American History that has never been taught in American Schools...but I think it should be, ‘cause most White Americans in 2021 aren’t the same as the White Americans who staged a coup in 1893...but some are, as we saw a coup staged on January 6, 2021. One of the biggest reasons we study History is to make sure we don’t repeat mistakes and/or bad behavior...so we need to stop hiding the mistakes of American History. I wish they’d teach about the 3 years that some of my relatives spent in concentration camps, despite having been 3rd generation Americans...and none of what happened 70 years ago would affect how I see people in 2021. I love my compatriots, and I’d die for my friends of all races and colors. 🇺🇸

The value added tax in America makes sense because the federal government, states, cities, and even counties can all have their own tax rates. It's much easier to just add it on, as some stores even a mile or two apart can have varying tax rates from each other based on jurisdiction. The price tags can thus be mass produced nationwide, saving on costs for the stores themselves.

I can attest to this. I live 30 minutes away by Highway going East to my nearest Supermarket. There, sales tax all told is 10%. If I drive 35 minutes West instead, I hit another town with a Supermarket and tax is only 8.75%. If I go to the city nearest me that straddles the state line, I can buy groceries in the next state with a very low 3.5% tax on food instead of my state that charges full tax for food. The options vary wildly.

I looked this up recently for my area. In Texas, the state charges 6% and then they allow counties and cities to charge up to 2% extra. Of course here in Dallas, they charge that extra 2%. I think 1% goes to the county and 1% goes to DART (transit). It's only 7% in my home town and I think some really rural only have the state cut.
There's a state, I want to say Vermont, that has no sales tax at all. That blew my mind when I heard it since I'm so used to being charged for sales tax.

Value-added tax is charged to the producer in each step of the production chain. Sales tax is charged to the end-user purchaser. I don't know how it started that sales tax is not included in the sale price but it has been that way since before I was born fifty years ago.

    • @juansierra5704

And even people like myself, who are awful with numbers/math can tell pretty much exactly what the final price will be, because you keep a loose running total in your head after a while. I’ve never been really surprised by the final cost of groceries.
Since you mentioned it, I find the ease of moving the grocery cart seems to differ by store names. Walmart carts always seem to want to ram into other shoppers, but Hannaford carts glide effortlessly across all surfaces with a slight pressure.
Taxes: My county has a special sales tax that is charged on certain items and every penny goes to the Metropolitan Transit Authority to help subsidize NYC’s subway system (which is nowhere near us), and if I drive three miles, I’m in a different county that won’t have that tax but may have another similar setup with the money going elsewhere. The various state legislatures fight over these things and we all pay the price.

The thing about Walmart is they didn’t even really sell groceries until like the mid ‘90s. You used to have normal Walmarts (no groceries) and Super Walmarts, (with groceries) but by the mid ‘90s it seemed all Walmarts had become Walmart Supercenters. They used to just be department stores where you could get stuff like home goods, sporting goods, toys, TVs, crafts, clothing, computers, movies, music, and video games. Now they’re that with a supermarket added to side; used to always be on the left side, new ones it seems to be on the right side. They also use to be a pretty shitty place to buy music when the rating came around because they’d only sell the censored stuff, and they wouldn’t carry any movie over an R rating...but at some point they stopped selling radio edits, and in the early 2000s NC-17 movies (The Evil Dead Book of the Dead DVD was the first I remember ever seeing) started showing up their as unrated.
I was surprised to find a couple years ago while out of state that there are still Walmarts (and this was smaller than even the old normal Walmarts) that are basically just department stores that food wise sell the kind of stuff you could get from the gas station and some non perishables. Couldn’t really do any major grocery shopping there.

Maybe even 4 or 5 of these, but in the picture you see 95% of that is Wal-Mart proper. That looks to be a Supercenter which incorporates both Wal-Mart goods (electronics, clothes, rifles and hunting gear, bicycles and sporting gear, stationary, kitchen goods, etc.) and a full grocery store together. There are thousands of them here. Thousands upon thousands. Every nook and cranny. Every town great or small. Wal-Mart is everywhere.

A Wal-Mart Supercenter near me has other shops and such inside it. They go across the front near the registers. There is an eye doctor, a pharmacy, a bank, a Western Union, a hair salon, a nail salon, a photographer, a McDonald's... That might be it, it's been a while since I was there. There's a Redbox rental kiosk, too. Plus the mini arcade games and soda/pop machines.
And then in the Wal-Mart itself there's the garden / yard / outdoor section; the auto section with car parts, mechanics, key makers, etc.; the massive grocery section that takes up the entire left side; the clothes and shoes section, obviously, and home goods area with appliances, furniture, dishes, decor, etc.; the drugstore area with meds, bath stuff, makeup, etc.; the usually massive toy section with bikes; the entertainment section where they also sell computers, cameras, phones, and the like; the hunting and fishing area with rifles, scopes, poles, and so on; the home improvement area; and little miscellaneous areas like crafts, greeting cards, sports equipment, pet supplies and fish to buy, party supplies, etc. Some of them sell gas (petrol), too.
It's literally a one stop shop for most things and many are open 24/7/365. It's frankly bonkers.

Nope, SuperWalmarts as you saw there, generally just have a few separate shops upfront along the front wall of the store. Like a restaurant of some such, like a McDonald's or a Subway. Other shops may include an Eye Doctor, a Bank Outlet, or something else. But the rest of the store is open warehouse, with maybe the exception of a Tire "store" and a Seasonal lawn & garden "store." But the way Super Walmarts are laid out is you have your Grocery section on the far right of the store, the regular part of the store in the middle, and the automotive/seasonal stuff on the far left.
However huge internal shopping malls that became popular in the 60s and 70s, have been dying off over the past 25 years. Because people don't wanna go into these huge buildings just to have to walk to their favorite stores. Stand alone brick & mortar stores have replaced a lot of those, and of course Amazon has changed the entire retail industry as you may know. Before Amazon used to have to drive all over Hell's 40 Acres to find the certain kind of music I liked, only to be let down when the Record Store wouldn't have what I wanted. Walmart has 2 entrances at each end of the store. Running along the wall between the 2 entrances are small shops such as Subway, a bank and a hair salon.

Ours only has one entrance, but still has a few of those shops at the front. It's built in an urban-ish area so they squeezed it in. Believe it or not it has a parking lot out front about the size of two fast food restaurant parking lots. It's one single aisle along the front for cars, mostly past the single entrance. The secret -- the rest of the parking is underneath the store. You drive around the side down a little ramp and under the store to park. The parking lot under the store is as big as the store itself.

Many Walmarts have guns in the back. And the ones that don't, usually sell ammo lol. Usually right next to the camping supplies and electronics sections

Walmart is mostly just a store that has a large variety of items, including guns... But it will sometimes have small stores/stands inside of it such as a little Mc Donalds or a Subway.

They do sell tires at Walmart but you don’t have to take them out yourself. In fact many Walmart stores have automotive departments that will install them for you. And no that thing about brand differences is one hundred percent true. It shocked me the first time too.

Sales tax differs by state and some cities/counties have additional taxes. For example, Pennsylvania sales tax is 6% but there is an additional “sugar tax” on sugary drinks in the city of Philadelphia

Sales tax is based on your total because for instance of you buy 3 items that would equal 2.004 in tax each it would be rounded to 2 each. But if you buy 3 it's 6.012 so it is an extra cent in tax since we can't charge a fraction of a penny.when you consider the billions of transactions those pennies add up.
