  • Francis Bacon interviewed by Julian Jebb. I cleaned up the audio to make it easier to understand.

Francis Bacon at the BBC | The artist discusses his paintings and influences
New Release | Pilot - Francis Bacon
A lost interview with Francis Bacon from a pilot that was never broadcast.
    SYNOPSIS
This pilot for a live arts discussion programme was never broadcast, although the series that followed ran for over 130 editions. In this excerpt, Julian Jebb interviews Francis Bacon about his contemporaries in the art world, his working practices and his personal philosophies, such as his belief that true abstract painting is nothing more than 'lyrical, charming and decorative'.
    DID YOU KNOW?
As was common at the time, this interview concludes with both participants reaching for their cigarettes. Having cigarettes, and occasionally alcohol, on hand for intimate discussions such as this was thought to be a good way to get the guests to relax. In this interview, Bacon references a piece he wrote about Matthew Smith for a 1953 Tate exhibition of Smith's work. He claimed at the time that Smith's art made 'a direct assault upon the nervous system' and cited him as an influence on his own work.

Great to see this piece of mid 60’s footage. I love how candid and immediate it is with Bacon really concentrating on how to explain expressing fact through accident. Jebb is very posh obviously, and interrupts the master of post-realist painting, so that he goes off his train of thought. The best bit is the discussion of who’s cig pack belongs to who at the end. Amazing. Surprised this only has 17 views🤔

The original was posted to another RUclips channel, and it has more views there. But the audio was a little hard to understand so I cleaned it up and put this version up. All interviews with Francis Bacon are worth watching!

Julian Jebb was a close friend of Frances Partridge and she writes about him in her 1939 - 1972 Diaries which are an important and insightful historical document and very well worth reading. Partridge also admired Francis Bacon's paintings. There is a School of Francis Bacon - Damien Hirst, Ruben Pang, Frank Auerbach, Maggi Hambling, Alexander Verney-Elliott; - but not Jenny Saville who remains at the lazy level of illustration (photo-blown-up shop painting-by-numbers).

I far prefer this Francis Bacon interview with Julian Jebb to the over-rehearsed and over-edited interviews with the very boringly dull David Sylvester who made a lucrative career out of being a parasite off of Bacon. I wish Julian Jebb had done many more interviews with Francis Bacon.
