The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is on my TBR shelf, and knowing it's Ghibli-esque just moved it up the list for sure. Thanks for this fun list.

You’re welcome! I definitely wasn’t the first person to make that comparison, so hopefully knowing other people would recommend it for Ghibli fans gives that extra reassurance 😄

Margaret Rogerson’s Sorcery of Thorns stand alone also reminds me of Howl’s Moving Castle!

Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell is VERY much Howl's Moving Castle meets Kiki's delivery service vibes. It wasn't exactly my thing but it was the first book I've read that felt directly inspired by Studio Ghibli to me. More obscure, but Wolf Star by Tanith Lee (2nd book of the Claidi Journals) would fit right in, with its house with moving rooms, gardens, lovable automatons, magic, and plot structure. As i was reading it, i kept thinking "Miyazaki would eat this up"

Omfgggg I never thought of a strange the dreamer adaptation and now I need studio guibli (or any animation studio really) to adapt it!! It would probably the most beautiful thing ever if you think about it like wow, i need this so bad now…

I just finished the girl who fell beneath the sea and I totally agree, that book is a studio ghibli film in book form! I loved it, and I would looooove to see an adaptation of it

The "you can have another bird movie," line was amusing. LOL.

I got Ghibli vibes from Divine Rivals. Maybe just the world they’re in? Really felt like Howls Moving Castle to me.

I think A Wish in The Dark by Christina Soontornvat would be great for Studio Ghibli fans. It's very visual and has profound themes throughout while maintaining a sense of mystery, magic, and whimsy. The main characters are also very loveable.

I’ve only not read two of the books you mentioned but the rest I 100% agree with. I would also recommend the mirror visitor series. It’s a bit long so it’d have to be multiple ones if they adapted it or they’d do what that did with the tales of earth sea. It’s just so whimsical but with darker undertones and the world created was just so unique. I would add the six crimson cranes duology. I think the world and the characters would be done so well. I would also highly recommend the checking out the source material for a lot of the movies. Some of it is different then the final production but it’s still very enjoyable.

I have Six Crimson Cranes listed for a future part of this series, so I’m right there with you! I’ll have to look into the other series you mentioned ☺️

From Margaret Rogerson I would go more with Sorcery of Thorns (Nathaniel brings Howl to mind ^^). I really enjoyed this video topic!

The Girl Who Fell beneath the sea sounds like The Bride of the water god.

Perfect timing, was literally looking up this topic.
But also as a reccommendation for a whimsical ghiblie like story that can get sorta dark: Witch Hat Atelier. Its a manga though but reminded me of a mix of kiki delivery service and harry potter.

    What is a purple writing?

Purple prose is writing that is “flowery.” The writing uses several literary devices that are employed in poetry. (This goes beyond similes and metaphors and personification.)
