    You guys should watch 1961's "The Innocents" if you haven't already. An incredibly creepy ghost story with a really well thought out and layered plot, great performances and beautiful black & white cinematography. The ending of The woman in black instantly reminded me of this because The Innocents has a similar scene.

    • @Grandmastergav86
      @Grandmastergav86 4 года назад +1

      The Innocents was remade as the truly dreadful "The Others" which people always praise but I've always found to be far inferior.

    • @sherlockfan2000
      @sherlockfan2000 4 года назад +2

      Grandmastergav86-Too bad you don't like The Others, I didn't think it was terrible at all. It has one of Nicole Kidman's best performances, plus it was so eerie and atmospheric, the visuals were great and I loved the score. Also The Others was never actually a remake of The Innocents, The writer/director just took a bit of inspiration from elements of the novel The Turn Of The Screw that The Innocents was based on but it was it's own story.

    • @Grandmastergav86
      @Grandmastergav86 2 года назад

      @@sherlockfan2000 I never realised that I thought it was meant as a remake of that film but still I didn't enjoy it that much. The Innocents is wonderful though.

    Hey guys!!! Loved this review! If you liked this movie, I absolutely recommend 'Whistle and I'll Come To You' (1968) starring Michael Hordern, Directed by Jonathan Miller. A similar ghost story, it is televisual, unusual and deeply unsettling (& only 45 minutes!). It's around on RUclips somewhere. Do not bother with the 2010 remake though!

    I remember our English teacher showing us this version in school before we went to see the stage play and then I saw the 2012 remake and I wholeheartedly agree with you guys that there were way too many jump scares and it almost like a paint by numbers ‘horror movie’

  • @Blizzard757575
    @Blizzard757575 4 года назад +6

    Although Radcliffe gave a good performance the 2012 version was practically unwatchable with the jump scares. I cannot recall a movie in recent history with so many jump scares and the freaking noise turned up to deafening levels that accompanied it. Had to turn on the closed captions and turn down the volume.

That said, this TV version is closer to Susan Hill's book, especially the bleak ending. That book was so scary, l couldn't have it in my house at night. I left in on the front porch when it got dark.

    The music from this movie still haunts me. I was actually freaked out by it, and I've watched horror films all of my life. There was just something about it.
    I think horror movies require the actors in them to really act as if they are scared out of their wits. That is what this movie has that the remake does not have, imo. The reason the woman in black targets Arthur because he saves the gypsy girl - her next intended victim.
    The best thing about the remake are those creepy toys....

    Thank you guys so much for reviewing this movie, so few people seem to know about it thanks to Susan Hill (the author of the book) apparently hating it which is so unfair as it's a classic scary movie. My dad managed to get a copy of this movie for my mum as a Christmas present when I was about 11/12 years old as they both said it terrified them when they first saw it on TV one Christmas Eve as a ghost story for Christmas. My parents were pretty laid back when it came to what movies we would watch so they allowed me & my younger brother (who was only about 7 years old at the time) to watch it during a sleepover with a friend one night & lets just say that no other movie ever scared me as much as this did as a kid. To this day that woman's face especially during the scene were she's hovering over Arthur when he's in bed is still the stuff of my worst nightmares & to be honest the only other horror film that has truly terrified me as much as The Woman In Black did was Lake Mungo.

      Mechaminilla99-Unfortunately I don't think it will ever get a blu Ray release as Susan Hill who wrote the novel hated the 89 adaptation, yet loved the terrible Daniel Radcliffe adaptation, & she took action to ensure the 89 version didn't get a wider distribution. Hi Guys, this was such a strange movie years ago. I got a hold of a VHS copy my aunt had taped from TV in 90`s, remember watching it by myself one bored afternoon. UNFORGETABLE. Afterwards it took on a very small story by itself, lent it to mates, not letting on, in fact it lay in my old local, eventually the whole PUB watched it and got in on the joke, we would say its a "Sunday Afternoon Movie" a "bit like Sherlock Holmes with a twist". To a "man", everytime someone had watched it they`d come in the bar and first words were usually, "bast@rds!", "me and the wife lifted off the settee". GREAT!!..
    Even better, was the exclusivity of it, Susan Hill did not like her books treatment, I believe it took a decade or more until I got my hands on a copy from Canada. The only reason it got picked up by a production company was the success of the "Woman in Black" play, where they appear in the audience. I saw it when it did the rounds, I remember going to the Bog near the time of the first fright, had a few beers and bounded down to my seat, forgetting such a quick noisey entrance put the sh1ts up a couple near the aisle. Brilliant movie, with classic British Direction and a clever pace that lulls you into its killer charm.

    Isn't the woman appearing/disappearing just simply done by using jump cuts? I'm not sure why you think they had the woman fall down out of sight of the camera.Gary went to film school,right?

    so two grown ups killed by a fallen twig ... ? THat tree looked like it could barely injure you...a bit silly, sorry ^^ But then, I hate bad depressing endings with the bad ones winning in general, maybe that's why I am not impressed by this ending
