There's one pretty good cognitohazard which you missed: Conspiracies. Knowing about a conspiracy (or making one yourself) can make you doubt what you've been told, or learned growing up. These can also be pretty harmful physically if you consider a lot of real world issues caused by conspiracies.
Getting into conspiracies will change your entire view of reality over a long enough period of time. You start noticing patterns and things everywhere you look and you get Stockholm syndrome which only confirms your suspicions and it becomes a cycle. It's not always bad as it can make you smarter and help you learn new perspectives and paradigms, plus a lot of conspiracies are legit real. But if you let it it will consume you and you'll end up as a paranoid schizophrenic or that guy who burned himself alive outside of the Trump trial a few months ago
IYKYK: The image featured is a screenshot from a classic internet horror video called "woman goes psycho during makeup tutorial". the video contains what initially appears ti be a normal make up tutorial, however at a certain point, the woman stops completely and begins slamming her head into the table infront of her.
You're thinking and breathing manually, you notice you're holding your jaw up, your tongue cannot lay flat on your mouth, your clothes are touching your skin, and your skin has a lot of tiny spiders living in it
I love listening to information beyond human comprehension that may or may not have severe consequences for me in the future before I sleep, then again with my poor memory I'll forget about it within a day or two. 😅
I sincerely think Thomas Ligotti's book The Conspiracy Against the Human Race is an infohazard, perhaps of the despair code kind. So many people I know end up having an existential crisis from reading that book.
I think epilepsy is a cognitohazard due to the fact that it can happen at any time to anyone in various different forms. I had 3 seizures in 2018 that lead me to being hospitalized because of how rapid they’ve been, and now am afraid to drive a car in case they were to happen again. I may have gone on a 6 year streak of not having them but seriously, if I was driving a car and a seizure happens out of the blue, that’s my life gone
I don't care if none of you believe me.... But I did! I'm the one that... Under extreme duress... Came up with the name. You all think it's funny because you don't have the context as to why the name was so ungodly strange sounding. I was literally fucking 12 or less when I was forced to come up with that phrase on the fly, in the middle of a torturous... Session shall we say...With someone... Our traffickers had been paid a lot of money by this individual to see us. But instead of raping us like most people they had us taken to some podunk wood cabin in upstate New York. They dosed us with a lot of acid. Turned off the lights, & Started grilling us about chakras... We were tied up in a chair with a single light dangling over our head from the center of the room. the center of the room just like in any fucking scene with shit like this going on. The dude was absolutely leaning into a bunch of torture cliches but You try telling my 12-year-old self at the time and see how much difference it makes to me back then! I can remember as he ran his hand over body... Calling out where the chakras were in each spot... And gauging my reactions... Which were about as "calm" as you would expect yourself to be while a psychiatrist with mad Nazi scientist spectacles runs a hand less than a centimeter away from your head all the way down the front of your body down to your ass crack. For whatever reason I freaked out the least with his hand over our solar plexus, which it's not like he's still couldn't have done an obscene am out of damage to us considering it's not too far from our heart or whatever but it seems to make sense to me that that would be far less scary than some of the other places. This is when he...he ordered us to say "Solar Plexus" over and over and over again. Screaming and cursing at us if we tried to close our eyes, and grabbing our face angrily if we ever tried any of the "this too shall pass" stuff you normally would say to get through a bad trip. He starts ranting about how this is some kind of transcendental dark right of passage and that it's a gift that I'm squandering if I look away ... Especially if I see anything that scares or terrifies me... And tells me that I should then choose two more words... One of something that scares me... And one of something that the thing does that scares me... If a mantra is supposed to bring you enlightenment and calmness... The creation of this phrase was for the exact opposite purpose. To unleash madness and terror... And that's what it did!
By this definition, misconceptions are also infohazards. People who learn about them often feel like reality is a lie and that they weren't supposed to know these truth.
I remember learning about Roko's Basilisk as a kid as I genuinely thought it was real and I was questioning reality afterwards but then I thought "no problem I'll just forget it and then the Ai will never know I was aware of it" and now I just got reminded of it and a part of me still believes it's real😭
Another relatively recent cognitohazard would prolly be the one seen in The Boiled One Phenomenon, specifically the one revolving around Phen-228. Watching the reversed version of that video actually had me fearing for my life for a bit lol.
@whosflair3716 So The Boiled One Phenomenon is an analog horror video detailing an event where several people in the eastern US had their tv programs interrupted by a clip of a disturbing figuring speaking to them, telling them that the person watching will wake up the next morning paralyzed and unable to move, and the creature talking would see them again in the future, watching over their helpless bodies. Just the fear and idea of catching that thing in the corner of your eye after watching it, or fearing that it will become your sleep paralysis demon could be considered a cognitohazard in and of itself.
if you wanna scare yourself more, watch greylock horror (heavily involves tulpas) or watch the human project/the oracle project (reminds me of roccos basilisk)
you have roko's basilisk wrong. roko's basilisk does not cause serious existential dread or whatever. roko's basilisk unavoidably dooms people to eternal suffering in the distant future, unless those who have knowledge of the existence/idea of roko's basilisk do something to aid in its own creation. THAT, is why roko's basilisk is so dangerous side note: however, people who have no knowledge of roko's basilisk cannot possibly aid in the creation of such a supercomputer sentient ai, and so punishing them is pointless.
5:17 theres a fragment of an unidentified song that causes me distress, it is catchy but off-putting, the steady and intense rhythm of the drums with the tight bass and guitar. And the slow attack keyboard with no decay or r3verb is so offputting
i think photosensitive epilepsy can be a cognito hazard in a sense that flashing lights can be hazardous cognitive stimuli to people that have it. and not to rip on you, i dont see why you left epilepsy there just to dismiss it. you coulda replaced it with something else. nice video anyways
