Thanks for this. I met Ted around a camp-fire back in the late 1970's over a few beers and a bottle of rum he educated this naive 17yo guy. Under the endless stars at night In the outback of the Territory and Western Queensland. Will never forget that experience even 40 years ago

Gotta love the old 'Foster-phone'; Ted Egan is a living legend in this country.... its a real shame that not more people are aware of his work with indigenous people.

Just read My Life Ted Egan Outback Songman.
What an amazing life, man and story. I claim total ignorance and shame not hearing about the man before. I am in my mid 60s, city dweller all my life but love Country and people. Thank you Ted for sharing your life and songs in a way that you compose them is priceless. I will follow you now

My lovely daughter and I had the incredible experience of seeing Ted Egan in Alice Springs years ago when touring through the center of that marvelous country. Listening to the history of Australia through the songs of Mr. Egan was a once in a lifetime experience.

Ran into Ted in Alice Springs when he was playing to mixed crowd including Magda Szubanska. He surprised us by telling us about the history of Australia in word and in song... and promoting his movie "The Drovers Boy". The fosterphone is a surprisingly versatile instrument in Ted's hands. Thanks for an enjoyable night out.

This link was sent to me by Philip Wollen. . . . he described it as deeply poignant, and left him with a deep sense of sadness. I have to agree with him.

There is far more story to this than the song it includes CQ stories. There is an old effort where, I can't tell it all,I'm American, but there was an entire story told in an major location based on this story.
My wife is Aboriginal, her elders were Stolen. In the US where I'm from stolen generations ended in the early 1800's. In Australia, The Aboriginals were RECENT. My Mother could have know thenm.

This story is set in the 1920s. Camoweal is a town on the western border of QLD, it has a pub. A drover was is a kind of professional livestock herder who travelled large distances, similar to a cowboy. The drover's boy is actually an aboriginal woman, she probably survived a massacre by police/ranchers in the far northwest Kimberley region near the Fitzroy River (the stranger had come from the "Kimberley run Fitzroy" and spoke of the "massacre in the west") but was enslaved by pastoralists ("grab a gin, cut her hair, break her in and call her a boy, the drover's boy"). At some point, a drovers has a secret marriage to the drovers boy (marriage between whites and blacks was illegal), and possibly even has children with her. When she dies (droving was a very hard life), the white men who work for the drover, can't understand why he is upset over the death of an Aboriginal.
So, the story is more about the Frontier Wars AKA the Killing Times, the genocides, slavery and complicated relationships between Aboriginals and white people. Not as much about the Stolen Generations (which were also terrible and continued until the 1970s).

I appreciate Ted Egan for writing it as it is a great story to be told, but I agree with you, John Williamson's version adds more depth, dramatic effect and feeling, therefore in my opinion much better.
I had no idea until now that John didn't write it.

Awesome song when you realise that the 'drover's boy' was usually a woman... Most times, the drover and the drover's boy were the only company of each other, the other workers came and went depending on the towns, the seasons, the weather... Its a sad story
