      Johnathan.... make more models for us please, I use your models to play EoE AoR and F&D. And sadly currently your model selection is rather limited. Need more options especially for characters. I know those games are meant to go without figures but my group loves seeing figures all painted up and such and it negates any debates about character placement. All in all... love the models keep them coming and faster please :)

    I wanted to say this tutorial got me into painting my miniatures! I never thought it would be for me, but after seeing this I just gave it a go. I started with one stormtrooper and reached the wash stage yesterday. The result is really satisfying so far; I can't believe how cool it already looks!
    What I really like about your tutorial is that you really give a starter like me the idea that I can do it. You gave the exact info that I needed to start, nothing more, nothing less. Can't wait to finish the stormtroopers and continue on to the probe droids! Thank you so much and please keep it up!

    First of all, thank you for making these videos. I have painted a few dozens of miniatures already (from Warhammer, to WH40k, tanks, animals..), but it's always great to go back over the basics.
    I wanted to tell you that your tutorial is probably the single best I have ever seen for newcomers to the painting hobby. And I am not only talking about the way you present the methods of going at it, but you give little tips that makes the handling easier. Plus, you keep reminding these newcomers that "don't worry about X, we will do it later. Or if Z happens, you can easily fix it by doing this step". Hell, I decided to stop my video midway when I was blown appart by your very savvy and layback suggestion of "just experiment, start a music and let yourself get into a concentrated state of mind" just so I can write this post.
    The idea of starting with black and white stormtroopers was also a stroke of genius on your part: START IN BLACK AND WHITE. Man, why didn't I ever thought of that? It allows for an easy ease-in of the difficulty.
    Seriously man, I will recommend your channel and videos to all friends who want to pick up the hobby.

      I was worried about storage of painted miniatures. I know the gloss/mat cover helps protecting the paint, but do you think it would resist being stored in ziploc bags within the box when moved around? I usually wrap my painted miniatures in towel paper when I move them around, but Imperial Assault is so massive; I don't think it's an option.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Remi! I don't think I would like to risk trying to store the minis in ziploc bags.. I keep mine in a display cabinet since I don't have the need to travel with them, but there some some pretty nice storage solutions available if you search for "Imperial assault storage": www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=imperial%20assault%20storage

    Great video! Any advice for how much water to thin with the white? my white colors have come out very blotchy/chalky, and seem to have covered a lot of the wash details.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  9 лет назад

      Thank you sir!
      It's difficult to give hard-and-fast guidance regarding how much water to add as every pot of paint will be different. You might find a slightly thicker consistency easier to work with to get you started (as it's less likely to run into the darker details), but it sounds to me like you may just have too much paint "loaded" on your brush; I would simply try "unloading" some of the paint on you brush before you apply it by brushing onto your pallet once or twice. If you have too much paint on your brush you can end up with blotchy pools on the figure that are difficult to control, but if you have too little paint on you brush, then there's no harm done - except you have to go back for more! Also, bare in mind that it's OK if your first layer looks a little blotchy and uneven as you'll probably be going over it again once or twice to build up to a more solid, even white.
      This is without doubt the hardest part of the process, but a good opportunity to get a feel for how the paint behaves at different consistencies and learning to control it. If it's any comfort, I spent around 30 mins for each storm trooper on this stage :)
      Finally, I don't know what brushes you are using, but a good brush can make a big difference here.
      Hope this helps - let us know how you get on!

      Sorastro's Painting
      Thank you so much for the response. I'm using artist's loft Vienna brushes. size 5/0, 0, and 1, I've went over the miniature again with black wash, since much of the details were covered by the splotchy white. I will try putting a lot less paint on the brush, and take my time. Hopefully I can still salvage the mini! Thank you again!

    • @WodenIstWotan
      @WodenIstWotan 9 лет назад +3

      +Adam Dork Depends on room temperature and humidity but really it's best to just wait it out. While waiting for one to dry I tend to start work on another.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  8 лет назад +1

      +Adam Dork Hi Adam! As Mojo says - it can vary quite a bit. The wash is the thing that takes longest to dry but it's easy to see when it is. I find the other stages dry in a matter of minutes. If I'm trying to be quick I will place the minis in front of a fan to speed things along :)

    • @PetersonZF
      @PetersonZF 7 лет назад +1

      I tend to work my way through a squad and find that the first one is dry by the time I finish the last in any step, other than wash coats. I try to time those so it's dried overnight before I continue.

    Sorastro, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to put this together. I'm having so much fun painting these figures. I'm the absolute definition of a beginner to this hobby and with your videos as a guide I really can say that my figures are turning out great. I love experimenting with different amounts of white on my troopers. I'm leaving some of them pretty grimy to really show their war hardened nature. Not including drying time it took me a few hours. I was trying out different brushes and black washes so my time was a little bloated. I would suggest you plan more time than you think it is going to take you.

    I found your painting tutorials when I starting painting my Zombicide miniatures. Your Toxic Zombies in particular were incredible. Any way, thanks for these great Star Wars Tutorials as well, it takes a true expert to show beginners how to paint something they will be happy with. Most tutorials try to be as complex as possible to "show how good they are", but you genuinely show us novice painters easy steps to make great looking minis. Your passion for painting minis truly shows in your effort to teach people how fun and easy painting can be.... Even if mine still won't look anything like yours haha. Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for this stormtrooper painting tutorial :-D
    I've been a painter for over 40 years, and always struggled to get the "shine" on white armour, following so many hints and tips from other painters that just didn't work out.
    I've just taken on a vast amount of stormtroopers (unwanted by the previous owner) and wanted to use Citadel paints for my project.
    Your tutorials are amazingly easy to follow, and even for an "Old Hand" like myself, you show so many little tips and techniques that even I learn something new every time I watch them.
    The tip about painting the base edges of elite units is awe-inspiring, and is one I'll be using myself.
    I'm hoping somewhere you have a tutorial for painting white robes, too, as I really need help with that, even after all the years I've been in the hobby.
    Again, thank you, as now I can relax and get on with the job of painting white armour, and an even bigger thank you for the tutorial on painting Imperial Officers :-)

      Thanks a lot Todd! I'm glad you're finding my humble videos so useful! I've actually just used quite a simple but effective technique for the white parts of Leoiric's robes in the latest Descent video which you might find helpful.. :)

    Thank you so much! Please don’t stop.
    I’ve been playing Xwing for a while and it’s got me into board gaming. I really wanted IA but didn’t have the people to play it. Now the support App came out I asked my wife it for Christmas.
    What I didn’t ask for was for her to quietly listen to me talking about how cool the game was and I wanted to paint it up like this guy (showing her your video)
    Christmas Day comes and she not only bought me the game but a whole painters starter set from your video that she studied several times as the hours dwindled in the office nearing Christmas Day.
    So Christmas evening (so grateful to my awesome wife) I sat down with a Rum and Ginger all my new kit and your amazing tutorials.
    It’s now New Year’s Eve and I’ve just finished up one of the nine with Ardcoat and plan to do the rest tonight.
    They look amazing and I’m proud of my work all thanks to you.
    All the best for the future and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    I just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. I picked up some white primer, the citadel's white scar, abaddon black, and mechanical grey, some ardcoat and tarnish. I'm going to start with a set of three stormtroopers. I'm going to prime them, paint in the blacks, paint the base grey, spray the varnish and add the ardcoat. Hopefully the results come out fine until the other stuff comes in.

    Hello Sorastro,
    A big thank you to you because it is your tutorials that decided to paint my figurines of Star Wars "Assault on the Empire". I have just made my first order of Citadel products and I will start very quickly. I hope the result will be good and my goal will be that my figurines look "a bit" like yours. Again thank you for these videos really very useful, perfectly didactic, well mounted and very well sounded. Sorry for my poor English, I'm French! :) I hope that Google will have translated my French into good English and that it will not have misinterpreted my remarks. Beautiful! I love how simple you make everything, and it makes complete sense! I tried to use black to detail my stormtroopers and it doesn't look half as good as yours. I think I'm just too conservative about using nuln oil. Watching you completely cover yours at first freaked me out and then I saw the level of detail it gives the figure. Well done sir! I was at the Fleadh (Pronounced Flaah) and am always amazed at how talented young Irish people are at both dancing and playing instruments, even though I HATE Irish Trad music with a passion. I live in Ennis, so the event took over the whole town, but the young 'uns were mind-blowing with their displays.
