I'm starting to wonder if we need to dig up DFW's head and check what's inside. I got a feeling something's in there.

I liked the eschaton part because it was so absurd, convoluted, and pain stakingly stressful, and this was what these kids choose to do on their day off or when they were relaxing. I think it's definitely an allusion to the stress placed on them at ETA to be exceptional.

Really enjoyed the breakdown of the book and your general reactions to some of the characters and plot. The only thing I have to add to this is that the Eschaton section is undoubtedly one of the best/most-funny sequences in the entire book, and I’m glad you agree!

Just bought this book after I found a Jonathan franzen book”freedom” at a thrift store for a dollar . I remember this guy named Jason James bickford here on RUclips made a very interesting video about DFS faking his suicide and becoming Jonathan Franzen. I’ve been meaning to get infinite Jest for the longest time. As soon as I saw that book in the thrift store, I instantly remembered that desire I had to get infinite jest a few years ago! I can’t wait! I spent two years only reading the Bible essentially. This will be the first book I delve into into since my mid twenties !

This was great fellas. I’m currently listening to it on Audible. My 4th time with it and Noah, I gotta say, it is MADE to be revisited. It grows and blossoms within you...and it’s not as grim as it seems....!
    IMHO !
Terrific analysis and thanks a lot guys!

I love how I just watched this entire breakdown of the book and I'm more than likely will never have time to read this one. But David Foster Wallace seems to be a very fascinating character and I might go listen to that speech you referenced early in the video. What a fascinating sounding book glad you read it for us Noah

Agree with the Ennet halfway house sections being the most profound/relatable. To me at least

Great analysis there guys.. really enjoyed it. I'd like to mention though that it was Ken Erdedy in that hugging scene at the NA meeting.

I feel as if people are becoming real life NPCs (non playable characters; videogames), losing contact with their own inner monologue, their souls/identity receding and dissolving into the sea of the cultural spirit. Yet, I'm no one to talk as I struggle more and more when answering captchas, while attending job interviews or engaging in conversations with other humans. Thats controversial, but people around me and people as portrayed in media are becoming vague and generic, replicable. It's nice to see you guys struggling against spiritual decay and solipsism (I don't know if you feel an spiritual itch or ominous thirst behind your need of engaging in these fiction talks). I've never been to America, but the cultural winds blow portent. IDK. I apologize for this manic comment.

Yes! took me a few days to get through this video bit by bit, but I really loved this. I feel I know this book better every time I hear people talk about this and just unpack the layers!

    Great discussion!
I was not a fan of the Eschaton game, but I'm not a numbers guy.
Question: Do you think Orin died near the end of the novel (when he had the dream of being trapped in the big glass like he did to all the roaches in his apt)?

Watch the music video Calamity Song by The Decemberists. Eschaton inspired music video and it's good.
