These older games had to calculate bits on integer value which often maxed out at around 256. Even if you jumped over the flag in Mario you could eventually reach the visual glitch area, usually timer will run out and Mario would die first, but that is an example like why Link can only hold 255 rupees in Legend of Zelda NES.

For those wondering: Sonic 2 added the spindash, Super forms, and 7 Chaos Emeralds. Sonic 1 did not have that. Still, remaning in the code is a Super Sonic flag, probably meaning Sonic was meant to go Super, but didn't for the final. There is no code for the Spindash&7th Chaos Emeralds.

Fun fact: you die when there's a bunch of enemies or rings on screen because the game is being overloaded and it needs to reset, and in order to do that it kills Sonic.

Yup too many sprites. There is no max ring limit. Unless they are all on the screen at once. 😅🥴

The hack creator: you think Star Wars has lots of clones and robots? Hold my keyboard.
The reason why some things disappear is because the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive could only display 80 sprites on screen (20 per scanline).

I hadn't realized before, but this hack made me appreciate how many onscreen objects this game can handle. Perhaps Sonic losing so many rings when hit was an intentional flex of the Sega console's capabilities?

(7:43) If you jump while rolling, you lose the ability to control your horizontal momentum until you land. This could be a thing if you're stuck bouncing on top of an infinitely cloning item box or enemy.

I think what happened is your rings overflowed to 0. A single byte can only hold values from 0-255, so if you had 246 and hit two boxes, you'd end up with 246+20=256, which gets written as 0.
Dunno why you would die because of that though, usually you need to have 0 rings AND hit an enemy (or fall, or run out of time, but those don't apply here).

The thing that messes me up the most in Sonic (1) is that you can't charge spin dash and literally have to use running momentum.
doesn't bother me as much because even in re-releases with the spindash i barely use it anyway compared to sonic 2
Besides, this happens because Sonic 2 added the spindash, which wasn't introduced in Sonic 1, so there's no way to use spindash, except when you press down to roll while running
The individual bad guys aren't too hard to beat thankfully. Their strength is in numbers.

Dying When You “Make Too Many Enemies” Is Not A Rom Hack Feature. It’s A Feature In The Regular Game Made In Case The Game Gets Over Loaded With Too Many Sprites So The Game Doesnt Crash.

the bat robots should be called metal rouges cuz rouge is also a bat and the robot hedgehog is metal sonic. chamelion robot is metal espio and the bat robot is metal rouge.

I was never able to beat this game without game genie codes as a kid as the water level was too hard for me. Just a few years ago was the first time I ever beat Sonic 1 haha. I'm glad that I can at least kick my kid counterpart's ass at gaming!

This hack missed an opportunity to bombard the entire screen with cute animals anytime you open the capsules after boss fights. Imagine the whole screen completely swamped with little bunnies :-)
