Actually, this is the story of abirami pattar, I am not sure about the names....
On one new moon day, a king went to a sage(not sure). He was so immersed in his prayers that he couldn't properly acknowledge the presence of the king. In anger, the king asked the sage what that day was, the sage without thinking, because he was so immersed in his prayers said that it was full moon. The king said, well knowing that it was a new moon day, that if it is not a full moon day then he would kill the sage. When the sage came back to his senses started a penance(there's also a explanation of the penance, but I am not sure of that). Then the goddess became satisfied with his penance and threw her earring(?) to the sky making it a full moon, thus saving the sage from death.
