  • A model railway tutorial on how to build a Dapol Kitmaster Mineral Wagon kit.
    Hello everyone, this week I had a go at building one of Dapol's mineral wagon kits and I filmed the entire process so you can see how I got on. These kits are fairly old now but they're also relatively cheap so are great for beginners and anyone who wants a rake of several wagons without spending huge amounts on ready to run wagons!
    The Dapol Mineral Wagon Kit scrubs up really nicely in my opinion - there are a few fiddly bits but that's all part of the fun of model railway kit building. If someone like me can manage it I'm sure you'll have no trouble at all if you fancy having a go yourself. While this How To video isn't intended to be a fully detailed guide on building these wagon kits, I do hope it serves as an extra resource for anyone currently building or thinking about building on of these lovely kits from Dapol.
    I hope you enjoy the video and please don't forget to subscribe and leave a comment, especially if there's anything you want to see on the channel in the future.

    A good tip for these kits is that because the wheels have fairly finescale flanges, once the underframes is assembled, dunk it in some hot water for a few moments, then press it against a sheet of glass to ensure the sole bar is completely flat - this'll prevent wobbly wheel syndrome and the associated derailments.

      Nice tip! I'll have to try this out if I build any more of these kits in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

    Worth a mention that the white line(s) tell you where the end opening door is located (though it doesn't open on the model), thankfully you correctly placed it on both sides. The white line should match on both sides! I have seen wagons with it on the other side! The front opening door(s) also might have a V shaped line transfer for them. Alternative loads include black (packing) foam, which is more realistic for power station coal. There's a RUclips video about this.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 года назад

      Thanks Graham, great points! I'll be honest I thought I'd mentioned that in the video but looking back I only said I looked at images of where they needed to go. I did show a close up of both sides though for anyone following along.
      Yes, the side doors do sometimes have the V shaped lines on them but these transfers aren't included in the Dapol kit which is why they weren't added. Good to know about using packing foam for the wagon loads - I've done a few videos on adding loads to wagons too so there's lots of creative techniques out there. Thanks for watching 😃

      It doesn't help that the photo on the packaging has the stripe in the wrong place.

    Great vid. But can I suggest Tamiya extra thin. Due to lock down I started modelling again and thought I’d give it a go and WOW it’s so much nicer to use than humbrol or revell. Your presentation reminds me of when I was watching BBC kids shows (as a kid) but now being spoken to as an adult.(hope that makes sense)

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 года назад

      Thanks Duncan! To be honest I've just got a box of paints which is a mix of Humbrol, Revell and Tamiya. I don't think I've actually bought any new paint since I got back into the hobby myself as I'm not fussy so I just grab whatever colour looks right and work with that. 😂 If I do ever have to restock though I'll definitely look at the Tamiya paints a bit more closely though!
      Glad you enjoy the presentation of the videos too. I think that's the perfect way to describe them - simple enough for anyone to follow easily but without being talked down to.
      Thanks for watching 👍

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy I meant the glue. Sorry that was my fault. Tamiya extra thin glue is amazing stuff.

    Silly question time.
    The ready built unpainted dapol wagons come with NEM pockets fitted. Would it be hard to fit these to these kits?
    Thanks

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 года назад +1

      Not a silly question at all John. I actually have a few unpainted wagons on order for another video, so I'll be able to investigate properly when those arrive.
      Dapol do sell spare NEM pockets that look like they just plug into the hole in the chassis in the same way the ones in the kit do, which would be very easy in theory. There also seems to be people selling 3D printed NEM converters that are intended to just clip into the coupling mount, as shown at 06:17, which looks like a good option too (assuming they work!) so I'm sure it's achievable. Thanks for watching 😃

    Very useful thanks! A couple of questions: What is that glue you are using, and where do you get the lead weights? I have a few Dapol wagon kits waiting to be built, so this was really good to watch. Please do more if you can! Thanks.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 года назад

      Thanks Andrew, glad it was helpful. The glue is Revell Contacta (but any plastic glue should be fine) and the weights are just some curtain weights I found on Amazon in a pack of 20. I've also seen people use tyre weights or fishing weights as well so whatever you can get hold of really. Best of luck with your own Dapol kits, let us know how you get on and thanks again for watching! 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

      Hi there, I’m not sure if Dapol currently make a “ready to run” Mineral Wagon like this but the ones from Hornby or Bachmann are generally about £15 at least so this kit is definitely cheaper - even if you take into account paint and glue.
      They are older kits so they’re not as finely detailed as more modern wagons but they are very simple to put together so I’d say they’re perfect for beginners like yourself. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
