I really appreciate you talking about these things! I think as content creators we have a social responsibility and to be mindful of what we say does matter. What we say has the ability to influence others. To be mindful not to abuse that position or power that comes with it. At the same time as viewers we need to be mindful of the channels we watch and like you said really think about why that person makes videos.

Thank you for making this, my pet peeve is when someone makes a curriculum review video that's actually just a preview and there's no follow up after they used it. I appreciate honesty with sharing a child's educational path too, like maybe this specific math program wouldn't be right for you if your kid is interested in stem but it's good for them since their kid isn't college bound. That context is very important!

@@Kim-pq1rx Thank you for commenting! That’s something I’m trying to get better at, the follow up. And good point about the context!

This is an appreciated video! Speaking truth here. :) Thank you for sharing. Not every homeschool video is transparent at all with the true information on the curriculum they are showing!

I appreciate that you talk about falling behind. I try really hard to get all the things done so that my kids have a better education than what is offered from our school district. I often don’t fit in with other homeschoolers, and this topic is not the exception. I find more like minded homeschoolers on RUclips than in person. Thank you for your videos!

Yes. I resonate so much. I like to share what I plan to use but I don’t like to do updates until I’ve used curriculum pretty thoroughly. This means I don’t always update because some things just really don’t work like I planned.
I started RUclips in 2010. It was SUCH a different platform back then. It was so much more of a community. I really have struggled with the change to it being more performative over the years.
I’m also really struggling now that I have my own curriculum that I write. I want to share about that some on my channel, but I don’t want that to be all I share. I know this curriculum isn’t for everyone. I don’t want people to think they have to use it or even be interested to be a part of my channel. I really am struggling with this transition as well. (Also really struggling with time balance and prioritizing RUclips in general.)
It’s so hard too, because I know I have a ton of knowledge and experience, but I don’t want to position myself as an expert. I struggle with knowing what to share that will actually be useful. I don’t like making content just to fill a pre-determined schedule. I hope the videos I make are actually helpful.
I agree with so much of what you said. RUclips isn’t what it used to be. There are so many channels I used to enjoy that have become more commercial and I feel like are creating content to get sponsorships or keep up with the algorithm. It’s just not the same.

I’ve been watching your channel for a LONG time…like I’m pretty sure I remember when you did a live gender reveal when you were pregnant with your daughter 🤣 I think that your unit study box looks so cool and I so admire your ability to harness all of your thoughts and creativity into such a polished final product, something I wish I could do!

We have a similar list of pet peeves. 😂 I also think the belief that there is no such thing as behind in homeschool is rooted in privilege. Like many of us don't have the wealth/social connections that give people a leg up as they enter adulthood, but if you do... you can "afford" to be poorly educated.

    • @TheMommaLibrarian

I always watch your videos. And you can add in the chatty videos, too, because I think they are interesting and they make me think. It's nice to hear just natural talking about a subject I love and think about all the time. I do get the feeling we all need to be mindful about how important and weighty a responsibility it is to educate anyone, so you nailed it there. For me, my pet peeve is using homeschool to eliminate ones counterpoint, ie. take away subjects we don't like personally or that we disagree with and calling it a well-rounded education. I don't think I'm explaining it well, but like Justice Scalia, "I know it when I see it." Or another way of putting it, it's okay to be against something, but don't burn the book to avoid the issue. People don't debate anymore. Did they ever, really? Well, I teach it here. My kid can have an opposing opinion and not be wrong. I hope I don't eat my words one day, but I do try to be honest with myself and my kid.

I do want to say that I do teach my kids to defend our beliefs, BUT I do that through critical thinking. I do not want my kids or my students just to blindly follow me just because I'm the mom/teacher. I obviously know we differ quite significantly in our beliefs, but what I've always loved about you is that you are very respectful toward me and you actually even look out for me. Like if you think a book won't mesh with my beliefs you'll give me a warning, and I truly believe it's out of kindness and respect. At the beginning of your video you said that you're looking for connection and people don't have to be just like you. I love that about you. I love that we are friends and can share so much even if we are also very different. At the end of the day, we're all just people trying to do our best in this world. I'm thankful for you!

I started homeschooling my daughter in 2021. I didn't know much about homeschooling at the time, but your channel and others on RUclips have helped me find the path we're on now.
I really enjoy your channel because I feel that your values on education align closely with mine, and our kids are of similar ages (my daughter just started 6th grade). As a viewer, I usually skip sponsored videos unless I'm specifically researching the curriculum being discussed. It just seems logical to assume that "honest reviews" might be lacking in sponsored content.
I think it's wonderful to have someone like you who is willing to take the time to share useful, good, and valuable information with the world. Thank you for doing what you do. I enjoy each and every video you’ve published!
Now that I know how you feel about comments, I will remember to comment here!

Agree with all this. Some of my biggest frustrations is when you see a hints and tips video from someone who is brand new to homeschooling. Its obvious they have made it just for the sake of content. I feel like there should be a requirement to have so many years homeschooling under your belt before you can give out advice 😂

I enjoy watching hauls, DITL, homeschool setups, and all of that kind of stuff, but views on RUclips do not translate to success in homeschooling. I hate that homeschooling has become just an aesthetic. THAT is my pet peeve. Sometimes I find it hard to watch homeschool content because of all the product pushing and it seems like nothing is genuine anymore.

I totally agree with everything! I thought your critical thinking pet peeve was going to be that if just doing a logic puzzles workbook is not going to develop critical thinking skills in any meaningful way (which is my pet peeve lol). I think a lot of people don't really understand what critical thinking consists of and either assume it just means "winning arguments", or see any workbook with "critical thinking" or "logic" the cover and just hit buy now so they can say they taught it.
