  • Gary Graffman playing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto no. 4 for the left hand, op. 53, with the Moscow Virtuosi under Vladimir Spivakov, live in Moscow in 1990. Graffman has specialised in repertoire for the left hand since injuring his right in the '70s.

I feel privileged to see this performance of Gary Graffman playing this left-hand concerto.
What a wondrous concerto and what a fantastic performance.
This concerto is up there with the 3rd Piano Concerto and it is a shame that there aren't many willing to take it on.

The orchestra really sings... The forte in de second movement is just magic... I've never heard the piano burst with such force... Wonderful
The trumpet in the opening of the 3rd movement... Oh my god, the man must be repenting to this day xD

Think the orchestra gets behind at the end:- after 24:05 Graffman plays his final chord and the Orchestra are all ready to play - but don't!

Spivakov conducts like an instrumentalist - cannot prepare and anticipate, too late, too late.
