  • We bought and built the new Lego Barad-Dur (set 10333) in order to provide you with an honest, independent review of the set. In this video, we address some of the biggest questions surrounding Barad-Dur, such as is it a repetitive build, how good are the minifigs, is it worth its $460 price tag, and more.

you know 100% thats what lego did!
Peter jackson's movies were in the early 2000's so most fans would be 30-40 years old by this point at the peak of financial spending power, and now lego brings out these heavy hitter amazing kits

I think the chances of Minas Tirith next year is almost a guarantee. Barad-Dur is sold out. The GWP is sold out. Even Rivendell is on back order again. Hopefully the smaller sets aren’t far beyond Minas Tirith

@@eliasattal3205 For not micro scale they'd have to only do 3 tiers max. Even then it'd end up close to as tall as Barad Dur whilst being significantly wider. Looking at a $800 range if thats the path they go.

There is a single grooved 1×2 piece that doesn't line up with the rest. You can spot it at 2:34 . I almost made that mistake building it myself, but made sure to double check.

Great to hear a non-biased review of this set, really don't like the LAN reviews because almost all of them have no idea what they're on about and are clearly just there for the free stuff.

Definitely agree here, I can't stand reviews from places like Solid Brix, it comes across that its all forced enthusiasm, it doesn't feel geniune, and their knowledge of the underlying domain is so shallow, that they miss a lot of detail and cool stuff

For me it was engaging start to finish, never felt even a bit of boredom or annoyance. Took me 26 hours total. I also prefer this over Rivendell, with the price in mind, as this one actually looks like it costs that much, being so monstrously large. Rivendell is wonderful too but it looks a lot smaller and is less awe inspiring.

I finished building Barad-Dûr today. I totally love this model. The build was fun, and the model is imposing. Money well spent. I have to admit it is a bit scary building it - it really looks evil. Excellent job by LEGO, though I share your distress at the stickers on inside curves. I got three straight, and two crooked.

I suspect they will do some smaller sets once the big ones have been out a while. They wouldn't want to make smaller sets first as if people could get the minifigs in cheaper sets they would be much less likely to buy the expensive ones.

  • @brickblums

I think the only reason I bought this set is because I have Rivendell and if they create more LOTR large sets, I am likely to wish I had this one, too. Thank goodness for Insider Points, so I could afford it 😋

  • @octav1600

I think there is no contest between this and Rivendell. If you like black castles (not necessarily LOTR) you can get this as a nice addition to the Lion Knights castle. I prefer the Lion Knights castle, just because I like normal castle sets better, however this is a great set.
Now they need to announce a nice small and medium set line - and continue to bring out one of these HUGE sets each year ... we could have a 2 part set Minastirith, Osgiliath, Rohan, Helm's Deep, etc.

I rank Barad Dur over Imladris. Just conceptually the ultimate evil wizard's tower is more interesting than an elven village. And this tower is truly massive. I didnt fully appreciate its size until it was complete and it absolutely dominates every other build in the room. But then thats the point isnt it?

I bought Rivendell and Barad dur at the same time I built Barad dur first and it’s my favorite of the two just purely off looks. They don’t compete with lion knights castle, however because that set is absolutely god tier. I have an appreciation for these sets because I have the loop coaster and D&D set which thank god I got them at extreme discounts bc at $400 price range sets they’re some of the worst. I got them at like $150 each. They’re very disappointing and it shows in the after market price

I rate this about Rivendell because you can remove all the minifigs and know exactly what this is without the context they provide. It’s iconic. If you could only ever have one Lego LOTR set, this is the one I’d say would be most representative of the movies. And I am lucky to have all of the old lotr and hobbit sets

@buildingtogether I have heard for a while that Lego is contractually not allowed to make a LOTR theme of play scale sets because Harry Potter has a clause that says it will be the only fantasy licensed theme. And it would fit with what we’ve seen so far: These big sets, after all, are Icons and BrickHeadz sets (and one GWP Icons set) technically and then Lord of the Rings is the subtheme. What do you think about this? And @everyone have you heard this rumor and what do you think?

  • @BraveLittlePixel
    @BraveLittlePixel 3 месяца назад +1

LEGO really need to either give us more microbuilds of these enormous sets, or remove any superfluous bits, in the case of Barad-Dur, the final booklet for the top 1/3 section could have been all the set needed. LEGO is becoming only displayable on huge tables or dedicated plinths in homes or man caves now. I want to put lego on a bookcase, on a desk, in a nook of my room. I want a little Barad-Dur, realistically tower- but at a micro build level. Just like the art series ones of Van Gogh's Starry Night, provide a scene or diorama, and a figure or 2. Similarly I think LEGO could make an absolute financial KILLING if they sold 'battle packs' of these figures, whether LOTR or Castle. Imagine being able to buy a pack of 3 Uruk-Hair with accessories and a berserker. Or a pack of 5 knights with a catapult.
But also, who is this for? Who is buying a tower this big for over $400 and just putting it in their house? LEGO is far too expensive, and not just because it's premium, but because the sets are just too big, and this set will go to die-hard fans with big houses (probably Americans tbh, but for Europe, house sizes are significantly smaller on average).

As someone who was very excited for this set and who loved Rivendell (my favourite set ever), I can’t help but be disappointed by this due to the more bland and boring build this is. Some other things that annoy me:
    - the open back just annoys me
    - reuse of Sam and Frodo
    - the 2012 Gollum looking better
    - the large rock work that goes up the middle
    - the orcs (while cool) aren’t enough of a selling point for the figures for me to care leaving only 2 figures I actually like
    - the un-needed inclusion of play features
