"If you look at the gap in front of you and say this is the thing that it's getting in the way, re frame it and say this is an opportunity to close" thanks for that Matthew I really needed to hear that cause this is where I am now.
As a recent graphic design grad in the heart of 2020 and the pandemic, when normally I would have had the opportunity to meet people and find work, taken away from me. This video was extremely inspiring to just do the work! It seems incredibly daunting but the drive is there to do something and I've always followed my curiosity as well. Thank you for sharing!
Hearing about your journey, up to the point when you were a creative director pitching for a harry potter game, was so absolutely inspiring. Your perspective on getting these opportunities to work on projects for Metal Gear and the Wizarding World, made me swell with joy for your progress! I look up to studios such as Blind and MinaLima, so I'm feeling motivated to stick with my learning. Thank you for sharing this magical portfolio journey! 🧙♀️
I loved it. I cried because sometimes we think our experiences are the end of the world but then everything evolves to how it must be. Thanks for this unique content💫
I'm 40 years old and I have raised 2 sons. As a result, my career was delayed. Now I'm getting up. Thanks for those words. Great work! I have experience, also 20 years, with breaks. I have talent too. I just need to get my head in order. The only question is how to become an Art Director when I don't have experience as an Art Director. People from HR only employ Art Directors who have already worked in this position somewhere.
This is incredible. As a Freelance Cinematographer/ Videographer for the past two years I'd say I've been doing extremely well but currently struggle with wanting to learn so many different softwares and areas of the industry. I primarily work in Premiere and DaVinci, but briefly jump in and out of After Effects, motion graphics, illustrator, I dipped my toe in Cinema4D and there's just so much I want to learn all at the same time. This gives me confidence that as long as I maintain that drive to learn and try different things, in 10-20 years I'll eventually have made my way through most of them properly and I can look back as you do. It's already crazy looking back right now for me, so it must be amazing to see yourself 20 years down the line. Amazing video, thank you for sharing your journey and loved how personal it felt, just followed you on Insta Matt! I'll have to watch back through part one and two again 💯
I'm not even sure what to comment, this has been one of my favourite videos so far. It's nice to see how people have started out. I'm one year away from graduating university and I'm just getting back into my creative side, almost feels like I've wasted my time before and there's so much left to do to be anywhere close to where I want to be. This channel is almost like the mentor I never had and really need to go further. Thank you so much!
This was the pep talk that I didn't even know I needed.Thank you for this. I'm in my late 20's barely starting on my journey into the graphic design world. I have been having doubt's lately since I don't know where I'm going in this broad field. But this video has made me feel much more comfortable about not knowing where I am going to be in the future. Feeling motivated to just keep exploring till I find my place.
simply amazing stuff man. Persistence and hard work will get you far. You are a great example that to be authentic matters the most in the end. Your work stood out from so many and being uncomfortable equals growth. You were shy but did not like comfort because whenever you did you went ahead and pushed yourself more. Evolving along the way one step at a time. Awesome series! NEED ONE from Chris!!
Thank you Matthew, for showing the human side of a professional creative. Showing us that it's ok to not be good when you start, but through work and dedication, anything is possible. Your work is phenomenal and i very much enjoyed watching your story in these 2 videos - part 1 and 2. Very inspirational!
23:09 Regarding those soft skills -- thinking out loud here -- how do we cultivate a *healthy* vs *unhealthy* sense of self-critique when we acknowledge "the gap" between where we are and where we want to be? IOW...How do we balance 'the hunger' that comes with the desire to improve with the patience and humility that avoids being cruel or "unproductively negative" (say, destroying our own self-esteem with negative internal dialogue and and not taking action)? Does it simply come as a biproduct of taking consistent, long-term action and being more patient with yourself? The alternative is when creators don't feel like they're reaching their potential and the resulting blow to their confidence either slows their output or worse, causes them to quit 'The Path' altogether? I am realizing while watching this (and it builds on the last one Matthew put out about "personal expectations"), that the most beneficial "inner game" thing I need to focus on right now is -- as long as I am taking small daily action steps -- to be wayyy more patient with the speed that I close that gap between potential and current skill. Gaps = Opportunities, so take an optimistic outlook knowing you're expanding opportunities by using effort to overcome weakness 👌
Thank you Matthew for sharing your journey. I’m graduating from uni this September and I’ve been feeling so lost. This was such a reflective and inspiring episode. I’ve been using this quarantine to reconnect to my creative roots and explore how I can pivot from social science research to design.
Thanks for this, watched both and gonna now check the TED real quick because I really like the advice of "start before you're ready." Very informative, honest and inspiring. Enjoyed immensely and best of luck on the rest of your journey.
Hey Matthew, thanks for sharing. You've shared challenges that are very real to me and I guess to many people in this industry. This was almost downright emotional, thank you for talking about your insecurities and struggles. There are so many things you've said that will certainly improve my journey in this space. Again as sincerely as I can say.....thank you!!!
Amazing Matthew! Really nice to hear the stories behind the stories. The thoughts, the feelings at the time as it happened. It makes the story have more connection with us, the viewers. Please more videos like these. Well done to The Futur team... one of the best subscriptions I ever made. Never fails to impress.
You're an artistic expression Matt. This was incredibly captivating and the part on HP and Xbox was extremely thrilling. Thank you for this. Just realized I'm in this! Yay! ✌🏻🤍
Thank you for sharing, Matthew. I can't even finish listing down things you and Chris have taught me over the years. Glad that I'll be following along on your new journey of expressions and experimentations! You inspire me!
Thank you so much for sharing Matthew. I've been putting so much pressure on myself lately so these past 2 vids really resonated with me and helped me chill the hell out. I wanted to let you and the rest of the Futur crew know that you've positively impacted my life in a huge way. Thanks guys.
Hey Matthew! I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your journey. It's really easy to get discouraged during these times where, as artists, our place in the economy is a little shaky--as far as what comes after our world's situation.. So thank you for sharing your experience from 2008. Thank you for inspiring me so much and giving me hope.
I'm just about to graduate and your portfolio makes me feel better about where i'm starting and how i'll grow in the future. Thank you so much for sharing this!

You remind me of myself. I have many years to go before I build experience like yours. But it’s good to see a future in all of this. I’ll keep doing my best to show up.
Teaching and inspiring others are clearly your real superpowers. Thanks for sharing your story and insight. The advice is so universal that it applies perfectly for both my "real" job (retail management) and my side hustle (digital marketing) that I only just started a year ago at the age of 42. Keep making this style of content please. A lot of us need this in our lives.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I really enjoyed your openness and the communication of your story. I recently started returning to my creative roots and these two videos have been so inspirational!!!
What an amazing way to close out my day. Thank you so much for the entire story Matthew. Got so lost in It! So inspiring. Can't wait to see where the next 20 take you.
Thank you so much! Mat for sharing. Very inspiring and I have learned a lot from just by listening, you have answered a lot of my thoughts that are holding me back to move forward. Really Thank you so much.

I love these deep dive and emotional self discovery stories you tell. It definitely makes me feel that its okay where I am at right now and not to look at moving up in the design industry as an obstacle but an opportunity.
I enjoyed this two part series quite a bit. exploring an individuals career path and even broadly their life path has such insight and inspiration tied so deeply to it. I found it very endearing following your story as a creative, the challenges you embraced and the personal battle with self esteem and chasing the "best version" you HAD to be. Thank you for sharing your story. I am curious about the passion you showcase as a person. has it ever had a negative impact in your life? especially after the 2008 crisis and the after math that resulted in a need for your to work extra and demanding more and more for you in each project. Also would love to hear more about you current artistic exploration and you plans along with how teaching and educating started to become a part of your life with this RUclips channel or beyond.
Matthew, thank you so much for sharing your career path with us, it's inspiring, encouraging and eye-opening. So many people out there who are just on their path to find their own voice will see themselves in your story, find the answers they are looking for, and find the power to go forward, just like me. You and the team made another really valuable content once again. I wish I had know you guys sooner but it's never too late.

Thanks for this videos Mr. Encina! I've always respected your vision as an artist and that's why I shared this with my young graphic design students that are currently experimenting with different art forms. They need to know from the get go that success and sacrifice always share the same table, and that is OK to feel insecure, because that leads to challenge yourself to become a better artist that will never be satisfied with his work. Taking some of those wise words from Ms. Helen Moles: "An artist journey is never finished".
@@MatthewEncina I currently teach at the University Ana G. Mendez in Carolina, Puerto Rico. We currently have a great design program in which the students can learn different art related curses, ranging from graphic design, audio production, web design, multimedia, 3D animation and motion graphics. Watching your videos made me realize that we share a lot in common and I wanted them to see that we as artists must go through some struggles before we start to find our true identity. As you wisely stated. "Keep making. Keep learning. Be patient. Stay humble. Sometimes a good result takes minutes and other times it takes years. Just keep going and invest in you".
Thank you for helping me wake up, stand up, & entertain running towards my process & journey. This "give back" was/is incredible to me. I journaled a bit on it as well as plan to act on a few inspirations that you awakened in me. Respect & blessings Mathew!! 🙌🏼 🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@MatthewEncina well, actually they are several parts but I'm just going to mention the ones that got me emotional and felt related and proud to me at the same time, the first part is 9:40 when you were talking about what you've got and gain thought the market crash experience, and the second one is 35:18 before the ending when you were talking about the whole journey and how proud you felt about the Xbox project and the people who support and encourage you to do the best I really felt that.

I can't explain my emotional reaction to this series❤, I simply have a deep appreciation for the human journey. We all face failures, yet emerge stronger, and that's what resonates with me. @Matthew Thank you soo much for this, hope you have a bright future ahead.🙌
I really enjoyed hearing this, as I work on my comic. With my 2nd year of art school wrapped up and not much else to focus on, this talk is very much appreciated as a person who still is learning how to prepare for the market. :D
Thank you The Futur Academy and Matt Encina for this wonderful mini-series. Definitely learned a lot from it. It’s so inspiring especially to newbie designers like me who’s just starting out. I have a long way to go but I am not stopping now. Learning should never stop after university.
This is really great and motivating. I am currently having difficulties switching my career to design as a UX designer. I have a self-taught background in graphics design and web design during the past 10 years. Even though I had to start a full time job in another career past 10 years, I have been practicing the design skills. But now I have made the decision to move forward in doing what I really love doing and to get there by putting all my efforts. However, I really am struggling to pave my path to make the switch. I feel like I am everywhere and not able to get to anywhere.
@@MatthewEncina Thanks Matthew. It means a lot and confirms a few thoughts in my head to how I should move forward and focus deeply on this. And those thoughts have also started to come around from these valuable videos. I feel in my gut that I'll one day be in debt to The Futur team.
Shoutout to all who watched both parts 1 and 2. Time well-spent.

Thanks Man, you give me motivation!
wow... so touching
man I felt that @9:36 its like I'm also on that road
I really enjoyed hearing this, as I work on my comic. With my 2nd year of art school wrapped up and not much else to focus on, this talk is very much appreciated as a person who still is learning how to prepare for the market. :D
Wonderful!
this.was.amazing. there are no words to describe how inspirational this was. injection of inspiration. thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Futur Academy glad this channel exists
I feel in my gut that I'll one day be in debt to The Futur team.
makes me want to watch the big short again!
I learnt to just keep going, there is never a point of arrival. Loved this video, gives you so much to.
