This video was very helpful. I was really having a rough time, with my door halfway apart, figuring out why I couldn't get my regulator loose through the access holes in the inner door panel. ,Thank you very much for posting it. I had one difficulty, though. On my 2002 B6 A4 Quattro, when I was removing the bolts that held the inner window assembly in the driver's side door, I heard some little clinks in the bottom of the door. I reached in and came out with several flat horseshoe shaped pieces of metal. I didn't know what they were. When I put everything back together and closed my door, I had a gap where the top of the window rail met the roof. I realized, at that point, that these were shims that went in where the main bolts went into the window assembly. Thankfully I didn't have to take everything back apart, just loosen all the bolts enough to slide the shims back in, but it was a trial and error process until I got the right number of shims in each location for everything to be aligned properly. This may be a solution to the problems KetamineFix and Tiger in me (maybe others, I didn't read all of the comments) had with the window glass alignment or needing extra force to close the window. So what I'm saying is, when you're taking the main bolts out, it might be a good idea to reach in the door and remove or catch any shims that may be in there so you can replace them with the correct number of shims at each bolt. Again, Thanks "happywrenching" for a very helpful video.
I have black 04 s4, my driver side window regulator died. I bought one brand new from my friend-dealer for 75 bucks. Watched this video only once and went straight to my garage go work on it, 2 hours just passed and im back to thank u for this vid. my regulator works like brand new... Shop told me it is 4 hours of labor, i just saved 300-400 bucks??!! lol love to work on my cars with my own hands!!!
I had the pleasure of this job today on a client's vehicle today. got the door panel off no problem then I looked at the window and thought how the hell one the glass out of the door and showing the cable that that run from the door mirror take - very important step and I was doing this job alone. thank you for a very precise & informative video , got the job done without breaking anything:-)
Great tutorial, thanks! Once you've removed the screws, the inner door plastic simply pulls straight up and comes right off. No need to break any clips. I have a 2000 and my regulator started wearing out about 3-4 years ago. It finally snapped tonight! A shim will have to hold everything until I can fix it.
Tremendous video. Two additions for those who are using this video as a guide for an 2004 A4 3.0 driver's side window regulator replacement. 1. There are two screws that need to be taken out when you pop the small panel slightly above the armrest. 2. There are also two screens that need to be taken out to remove the driver's side mirror. In my case, one of the two wires that attaches to the gear on the regulator broke at the gear. I'm ordering a new regulatory assembly and will save $390.
Thank you, what a kind and thoughtful video to upload most people these days will do nothing for nothing but you are a pleasant exception! Will use this to fix my window thanks again
Kudos! This video was a great help after I went to my local junkyard and got the part for $53 INSTEAD of going to the dealer. Thanks man. I am subscribing to your channel!
I just changed my window regulator using this guide and was a complete success! I would add that the mirror cable on mine was fixed with little velcro straps that were a pain to undo but other than that the vid is spot on 👌
Audi's slogan should be "Audi, We make things way more complicated than it need to be." Thanks for the video. im going to do this once the regular gets here.
Finally bit the bullet & changed mine today, all made easier with the help of your video (thanks). Only paid £18 for my regulator from eBay so cheap easy fix.
Great video. You saved me $500. It would have been more but I bought an OEM regulator and paid for 2 day shipping. Did break 2 door clips, so add another $3.
great video. you saved my butt on this job. just did it on a 06 A4 B7 pretty identical. few things that are worth mentioning you may want to add to tag. when you say "mark the window regulator so that you could put it in the same place" i stared at the assembly unclear by what you meant. i figured the two black rails could pivot to a wide degree which i saw to be the case once i loosened the screws, so i took a pencil and stenciled around them to where they mounted. worked good but....
This helped a lot. I got halfway in and scratched my head, had my suspicions that the whole upper half of the door would have to come out. This confirmed it. Not sure whether to love it or hate it. It kind of seems like extra work but any other vehicle I’ve replaced one on required a lot of window manipulation and risked scratching it in the process. This design helps prevent that.
BIG thanks guys. Got a new regulator for less than £20 and fitted it with your tutorial. Patience is the way to go with this and although it took me about 4 hours in all it all works and fits together properly
Thanks for the video. Managed to get mine done today. Didn't account for one of the retaining screws on the motor snapping a lug off from the regulator though... don't over tighten guys! Had to remove the wing mirror too and it was a bugger to get back on correctly so anyone looking to do this make sure you can remove with the mirror attached and there is enough slack on the cable. Thanks again!
That was just a brilliant guide ... covered everything including differences covering a RH drive car (screws behind cap on drivers door). I just did mine ... but my issue turned out not to be a regulator mechanism issue .... the cheap nasty plastic splined shaft from the motor had sheared right through - all the teeth were good, but superglue didn't fix it. So I stripped the whole shooting match out assuming it was a cable issue or something else - turned out I only needed to take the motor off ... but hey ... I had a morning free and did some exploration into what was in my door ... it still constituted fun ;-) now got to see if I can buy just the plastic splined motor shaft, not a whole frikkin motor ...
Thanks for this video! This is a job that I have to do this week and your vid has shown me a simple way to get at the bits I need, in the order I need them. You've probably saved me 30-40 minutes and several broken clips, or even the glass! Huge props to you for your vid - really clear. Thank you
Thanks for this video. I replaced the cable kit in mine today. Knowing where each bolt or screw is beforehand helped a lot. With the cable kit the only tough bit was winding the cables onto the drive pulley & then 'twist it tight & flip it down flat into its housing'. I put in soundproofing into the door & a new window switch lock as well. This time I remembered to connect the doors inside latch cable too.
A very astute observation. Even if every person who had an issue with the Audi window regulator looked at this video, it would be a horrible statistic. But realize that only a small faction of a percent is probably looking at this video to try and troubleshoot the problem. I currently have the issue for the second time on my 2002 A4 and once before on my 1997 A4. Has it been solved? Or are a large percentage of Audi / Volkswagen owners still suffering this issue?
Excellent video! My window suddenly made a grinding noise and ground to a halt fully open.. just in time for a belting thunderstorm. Only problem I found was the Torx bolts holding the regulator mechanism in place in the top section appear to be made of putty, as the one of the heads totally caved. I now have to drill the thing out! And of course, the replacement regulator mechanism doesn't come with replacement bolts...arrgh. So it's off down to the main stealer tomorrow for some spares...
Excellent Video! Your instructions are very clear and the video quality is exceptional! My Lover and I replaced the regulator in our garage this morning, and to my surprise, we did not end up with any orphan bolts or screws! (...a first for me). Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and for saving us a bunch of $. Please make more videos like this one.
Just did this job using this video. Very helpful thanks. One idea for future videos is.... when you take out a screw or bolt, show it to the camera so when it all goes back together we know which one to put in. Just a thought but perfect help cheers.
It is not always necessary to replace the whole assembly - sometimes the clips break other times its the cable that chews through the plastic piece. We went with the full assembly because it was just less hassle to replace the whole thing rather than mess around with the individual parts.
Are you sure there is an override switch to disable the child safety lock? Other then that I can't really think of anything else but to cut out the panel with an angle grinder. I think you will get a lot more help if you post your questions on one of the audi message boards - either audizine or audiforums. Good luck.
Thanks for the outstanding video! I was able to fix my driver side window in three hours. The only thing I could not do was install two locking flat clips that fell into the bottom of the door pan when I pulled out the window? Of course I also own a 2003 A4 model maybe that style is different maybe from 2004. Thanks you made my wrenching happy!.
one very important thing to make sure of prior to mounting the glass back on the assembly is making sure the cable coming out of the top of the blue center spool section (leading to the top rear pulley towards the rear of the car, once mounted) is on the inside (towards the center of the car) of the cable its crossing over (the cable that goes to the bottom rear pulley).
I honestly don't know if its the same since I've never opened up the panels on a first generation A4. However, based on the previous comments here, it looks like the process is very similar.
Good video. Thanks. However, you should mention that the window bolts that attach the window to the regulator should not be tightened snug/tight. This will cause binding and drag. The window should have a little play on the regulator blocks. Tighten down then back off 1/4 turn.
you prolly dont give a shit but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Frank Edward I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
When we removed the material, the adhesive came out with it as well. We were able to then reuse the adhesive when putting the material back in. But if the adhesive on your car is no good I really don't know what kind you would use to glue that back to the door.
Thanks for the post I got my window working but seems like my door has no power now doesn't lock/button doesn't seem to be doing anything even the light doesn't work. Help plz....
Yes, the process is the pretty much the same. Screws and bolts will be in different places but the process is the same: remove the door cover, remove the sound deadening, remove the motor & speaker, and lift the top half of the door up.
great video, only thing you never mentioned was window alignment, I followed your vid to the letter, when I secured the window onto the regulator, window was about one 3rd of the way down, when I put the window up it is misaligned (not sitting true with the window frame and not sealing) I am going to get to the point where I can slacken the window securing bolts on the regulator, push window hard up into the correct position an re-tighten, hopefully that will align it, anyhoo, thanks for taking the time to make the vid ;)
thanks ever so much for your help. I don't do many Audis, (I'm a Mercedes guy) so this was a big help. unless you know how to do these jobs properly, modern cars can be tricky to take apart without breaking something. I had no idea they came apart this way. cheers.
Mine has failed for a second time. 2004 A4 just like the one in the vid. Thank you for posting this..but I do question why this isn't already an Audi recall.
Thanks, so helpfull. Only thing wrong with youre video is, there is no need to remove the sound deadening foam from the doorskin. Otherwise, very good guide.
Great instructions, my regulator has just broken and followed this video step by step.I am waiting to get the replacement unit, but before I fit it, can you tell me if it makes a difference whether the window is in, either the up or down position during assembly or doesn't it matter ?
I drive an audi a4 96, will it be the same to remove? I had trouble trying to take off the door panel i really didint wanna mess with it and end up breaking siomething
@SundayGladiator The window stopping midway is actually one of the symptoms of a failing regulator. The cable wears out the plastic, causing it to bind. Either way, I think you will have to take out the window assembly.
All I can say is that the door control module is integrated with the window motor assembly, so make sure that all of the electrical connections have been properly plugged in.
@johnabreault thx for the tips on the driver side. While not completely broken, the wires on our window regulator assembly were eating away at the plastic gear piece. The plastic parts and the "factory" duct tape make me wonder what audi was thinking when they designed this.
@Jay Martindale cap, i’m putting my door panel back on and can’t line the clips up for the life of me, really tests my patience especially when i can’t find any vids on it
@Jay Martindale yea i slid it into the channel, banged it down into place, made sure the speaker bracket lined up with the speaker, then every time i hit the door in a clip would fall, finally got them clipped in and on the last hit, the cord that hooks to the door handle unhooked.. wanted to rip the whole door off after that
At the speaker-removal i was like, no way thats so much to replace after im done. few minutes later, and now you can remove the top half of the door. Audi, we need to talk.
emm.. why did u reintall fully new whole assembly? which is about 50£ why didn't u go just for repair kit(wihout those metal rails) which is only 19£? or is itt nessesary to replace whole mechanism?
Thanks guys just finished fitting new regulator, thanks to your vid and saved myself £100 fitting charge that garage wanted. Do you have instructions how to remove front wings on same car. A4 18T.

Don't blame you... new audi parts are a total ripoff. Glad it worked out for you though.
i shouldve done that. i just paid 185 for it at the dealer
jack partsgeek.com is like 35 bucks
I just changed my window regulator using this guide and was a complete success! I would add that the mirror cable on mine was fixed with little velcro straps that were a pain to undo but other than that the vid is spot on 👌

You did a great job explaining how to replace a regulator on the passenger side. Great job. Thank you
Dan
First class video, and given the audi trait of chewing cables and what not, very helpfull to those of us who have suffered this fate.
This helped a lot. I got halfway in and scratched my head, had my suspicions that the whole upper half of the door would have to come out. This confirmed it. Not sure whether to love it or hate it. The side mirror mucked me up too!!!
This is by far one of the best tutorials that i have seen, very well put together. Good Job

do you need to glue the sound dampening material back to the door or?

Are the hex bolts in the metal panel Audi specific or just standard sizes?
Thanks so much! Used this tutorial and now my windows work again. Job was very straight forward.
Thank you!!. Your video was very useful. I was be able to change it in less than two hours.

Thanks for the great video! Do you know which size the torx bolts are? So I can buy the correct torx bits. Thanks.
Thanks great vid.
Is there much of a difference replacing a regulator on a 2006 a4?
Thanks for this vid. I'm not interested in replacing regulator, but just getting the window back up (it's stopped half way down). How would I do this?
one very important thing to make sure of prior to mounting the glass back on the assembly is making sure the cable coming out of the top of the blue center spool section (leading to the top rear pulley towards the rear of the car, once mounted) is on the inside (towards the center of the car) of the cable its crossing over (the cable that goes to the bottom rear pulley).
Brillant video 1ST CLASS .Just did my two front doors after frost snapped wire at a cost of £50 saving £hundreds
Yep, those black rails do pivot and that's exactly what I meant by "marking". Lots of good info, thanks for stopping by and sharing!
Great vid ! Im going to replace lock actuator front driver door. Do you know if its possible without removing window with frame ?
I honestly don't know if its the same since I've never opened up the panels on a first generation A4. However, based on the previous comments here, it looks like the process is very similar.
Awesome video, so clear and detailed... i'm going to do this tomorrow. Is that a Canadian accent?
Great video. I change the regular out and now the window goes up and down slow. could i of over tighten something?
Good video.
@Kaiden Jorge Instablaster :)
@Frank Edward I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out atm.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Frank Edward It worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account!
@Kaiden Jorge no problem :)
Thanks for the video! Saved me 500 bucks!!
When we removed the material, the adhesive came out with it as well. We were able to then reuse the adhesive when putting the material back in. But if the adhesive on your car is no good I really don't know what kind you would use to glue that back to the door.
is this the same process for the rear passenger side window regulator?
Thanks for the post I got my window working but seems like my door has no power now doesn't lock/button doesn't seem to be doing anything even the light doesn't work. Help plz....
Could you not have unscrewed the inner panel instead of lifting the glass out?
I had no idea they came apart this way. cheers.
is there any way not to break any of the clips? or only audi garage knows how to do that?
You sir, are the man. I had to go through this process to change my side mirrors. Thanks!
Haha, you are welcome :)
Mine has failed for a second time. 2004 A4 just like the one in the vid. Thank you for posting this..but I do question why this isn't already an Audi recall.
Just did for a second time. Video very helpful . Thanks for taking the time to share your practical experience with us.
Thanks, so helpfull. Only thing wrong with youre video is, there is no need to remove the sound deadening foam from the doorskin. Otherwise, very good guide.
Is there a way to put the window up until you can afford the regulator? ?
Great instructions, my regulator has just broken and followed this video step by step.I am waiting to get the replacement unit, but before I fit it, can you tell me if it makes a difference whether the window is in, either the up or down position during assembly or doesn't it matter ?
Doesn't really matter. Its a little easier with the window down.
Thanks, I will let you know how I get on.
quick question..is this setup pretty similar to the a3?...need to replace regulator and maybe clips? on A3 1.9Dti???
Does the window have to be in the down position?
I drive an audi a4 96, will it be the same to remove? I had trouble trying to take off the door panel i really didint wanna mess with it and end up breaking siomething
Does the weather strip go back on without any glue??? About to do this
thanks my friend,it was the first time i wanted to replace power window from an a series, and you help a lot...
very helpful, I had one bolt left stopping me from getting the assembly out, the one above the lock under the cap
Thanks, good tutorial, used this video to replace my window switch on the drivers side, didn't even break any clips
How did you test the window at the end
should the window be up or down when fixing?
You should show how to put everything back together. That is most difficult part making it all fit back together.
@Jay Martindale cap, i’m putting my door panel back on and can’t line the clips up for the life of me, really tests my patience especially when i can’t find any vids on it
@Jay Martindale yea i slid it into the channel, banged it down into place, made sure the speaker bracket lined up with the speaker, then every time i hit the door in a clip would fall, finally got them clipped in and on the last hit, the cord that hooks to the door handle unhooked.. wanted to rip the whole door off after that
my window just completely stopped working. Could that be the regulator or did something get loose?
how similar is this process to a rear window regulator for b5 a4 ?
i wonder if this is the same basic procedure for an Audi Allroad
Great video until instillation and he just breezes over how you’re supposed to fit the new regulator together
I have a 2006 Audi S4 (B7), well this be the same procedure?
Can this be done window up? Almost at point of removing and realise yours is down but I'm un able to wind it down due to regulatory r failure
@tabletka666 You can probably save a few if you use a door clip remover. If you look it up in google it kind of looks like a screwdriver.

Good video. Not the easiest job to do, but well presented. Kudos!
At the speaker-removal i was like, no way thats so much to replace after im done.

Thanks a lot man, awsesome video. You saved me a couple hundred bucks. Happy wrenching indeed. Cheers.
You can do it either way but since the glass has to be removed from the tracks its easier to do this with the window down.
Our replacement regulator did not have any zip ties but thanks for the heads up. Might help someone out in the future.
Thank you guys for a great and easy tutorial. Keep up the great work.
