      I've honestly not noticed a huge difference so far. I suspect the A to D conversion on the 720 might be higher quality, and the footswitches aren't as smooth, but that's pretty much it.

    Just to publicly agree with the many others who appreciate your hard work on these excellent videos: easy to follow, brilliant clear comparisons between different pedals and their settings, great observations on your part and good music too. I keep coming back to your videos for the entertainment - not just to buy another pedal (although that happens too!). Thank you for all your hard work, the internet is a better place.

    Hi! Just a "Thank you" for the public service that you're providing by doing this. Also: very methodical (using the looper, to maintain consistency across pedals). I've been thinking about getting a Leslie simulator (**not** a Uni-vibe or vibrato/chorus sound!) -- and your demo (and commentary) helps tremendously! :) --GG

    Even though it's more Univibey, I really dig the BBE. Warm, smooth, and sweet! :)

  • @ThePedalBored
    @ThePedalBored  6 лет назад +36

    I've had the Big Spender (as well as some of the non-footswitchable ones) for a while and liked it but it's fascinating putting it up against these others. The ramp time is SO LONG! Unexpectedly surprised by the quality of the cheap-ish Nux Roctary. The Line 6 is a beast. I like the EHX Lester a lot.
    The pedals that are really Univibes just don't cut it for me unfortunately.
    My main takeaway from this is that I probably don't like much drive in a rotary pedal.

      Hey Mr. Bored, Great video. Did you think the TC electronic pedal lacked volume ? I bought one and it basically halved the volume when I turned it on. Great sound but totally un useable

    • @nichendrix
      @nichendrix 4 года назад +7

      Just one correction, the Nux Roctary have a ramp time control, you have to press the fast button for a little time and at the same time adjust the ramp time with the slow knob. You can also set the amount od dry signal along the octaves (by default set to 0) using the same trick with the +1 octave knob.

    My compliments on your format and presentation. I've dug some of your other vids too. Of course you can't do them all. But for people who are interested, my choice after going thru several over the years, going back to my H&K Rotosphere (and btw, the 75 pound Tonecore is the only one of your bunch that I've got), my choice is the Tech21 RotoChoir. The only thing it lacks is adjustable ramp speed. A great feature is mic position that can take you from smooth & fluid to deep throbbing close mic'ing. It's a keeper and it's on my board.

    • @ThePedalBored

    I used to play Hammond organ in bands, so I used to live with a Leslie 145 in my ear. The most convincing of these are the Leslie (it should be, at that steep price), and the Nux. I was surprised that the neo mini was not as good as its big brother Vent. Even more surprised by the inexpensive Nux...really good, especially on the fast mode, where most of the emulators fall apart.
    Including the Strymon Lex would have been a good contestant.

      @ThePedalBored  6 лет назад +6

      andrew strong Well that's subjective of course - I guess the point of these videos is to help everyone make up their own minds. But I do rate it quite highly compared to some of the others.
      And examining the manual I see there is indeed a way to change the acceleration - hold down a footswitch and turn a control knob - but there isn't the dedicated primary control for it which some other pedals have.
      But this will certainly remind me to read the manuals more carefully next time!

      I agree. The Vent has a very rich tone, and a beautiful emulation. I just could drop the coin for it. Maybe Christmas. The Strymon LEX is a close second, IMHO. I got a used one for way less than the near-Vent retail price. They both have a good fast speed (which is where most emulators do not sound "real"), adjustable ramp times, good tone and very realistic emulations. The Vent does have the fattest tone of all of 'em, tho.

    I'm late to this, but the NUX Roctary does have a ramp speed function. You hold the speed switch and adjust the slow knob to change the ramp. There's a few hidden functions to the pedal in the manual. My only complaint is that it's a little loud and lacks a volume knob unattached to the drive function, so you need to adjust your guitar volume when you engage it. But, otherwise, it's a damn solid pedal for the price.

    The Mooer mini sounds good. At slow speed, it's got that phasey Univibe sound and at high speed, it gets a little of that Leslie high freq buzzimg without the intense thud & warble of a Univibe. I personally prefer the slow vibe sound to the slow Leslie 16/ Vibratone but I prefer the fast Leslie to the fast vibe.
    The Ventura Vibe would be a homerun for me but for some reason they made the ramp a momentary function... WHY?! To play on fast speed, you have to keep your foot on it or set it to fast and lose your slow speed. That's silly!
    It seems like every rotary pedal designer drops the ball in at least one area(Like the endless ramp time on the Big Spender or the Vibroclone's loss of highs and volume). They should let a few players try out the prototype before they put them into production?

    • @manualofalternativemusic

      I believe Leslie simulators are tough to crack in a pedal format, that’s why they may come with some “problems”. But yeah it’s good enough I’d say. I have a Hardwire TR-7 and it’s pretty sick, I can have that warbling sound in a small package, it’s great for studio or live situations. Try this one if you’re looking for something that doesn’t reck out your highs and drops your volume (: I recommend it

Thought I'd be turning the reverb all the way down because I play a 70's Deluxe Reverb and the reverb is always on, and I like my reverb post dirt, yet adding a touch from the pedal helps it sound even better (while also having the amp reverb). Freaking great pedal. I thought the Keeley sounded really good too and gotta check it out now, also the Mooer or whatever sounded really good, can't lie! IT DOES HAVE ramp speed (Attack and Decay as seconday functions, OR plug in an expression ped).
    The High and Low are NOT Tone controls, they control the level of the Hi and Low horns.
    The Poly Octave is also insanely good, literally sounds like a real bass.

Mine still works, but I always use PSU's with 'true ground' (where the DC outputs ground has continuity with the earth pin of the mains plug), otherwise, with all those cheap pedal PSU's with no ground pin, they have a vitual ground, which has a 'potential difference' with true ground.

      I use my LEX rotary pedal at the very end of my pedal chain. Being a former Hammond player, I want the Leslie to be out front when I hit it. Both the Vent and the LEX have the option of Stereo output, which can really increase the effect in a room. How many of the other pedals have that?

    They're all cool in their own way but the NU-X had the nastiest, most grindin', rippin' rock organ swirl! Why did he cut the overdrive right when it was taking off? The Ventura had the best Univibe sound and can be ramped up, but it's rotary sound is just meh. You can add some cool tone prints.

      @@randylahey9953 I bought the NUX and it's killer! It's complicated but you can adjust the ramp time, switch on a cab simulator instead of full-range, it cuts through at slow speeds and can functions just as an overdrive. Plus the octave effects track perfectly... Jeez Louize!

    Great video! Is it just me, or did anybody else skip to the next one as soon as I saw having to turn a knob to change speed? Seems kinda silly, especially for keyboard where you want that acceleration and deceleration, that's the whole point! Gimme a switch, dang it!

  • @cuda426hemi
    @cuda426hemi 3 года назад

    Clearly NUX for the 'bux' but it also nails the "grind" of the Leslie tubes better than any of the other pedals. But then, I just scored the BEST for just $37 - the real licensed Leslie/Suzuki plug in from IK is just killer - all 5 Leslie amps and 6 cabs - tubes glow when you turn it on all knobs work virtually- variable mic placement, several rooms blah blah. Simply the best - albeit for recording or on stage via Mainstage 3 or the like. 🎶🎵

    You didn't play a Strymon LEX! It is up there with the Vent and Leslie pedals in quality of sound and build, tho it does have an 18v proprietary adapter.
    The most "authentic" sound (I toured with those hippos, the Hammond + Leslie, so I have a lot of familiarity with the effect) from your selections comes from the Leslie and the Neo Vent II. The Nux, after you turned off its drive function was a suprpize, not bad at all for the $ ...The Billionaire (must have been low on funds) has the ramp-up time of a Leslie's lower drum rotor, and only has that one spinning speaker in its emulation. The real Leslies had 2 rotors, one woofer drum in the lower part of the cabinet, and the high-mid and treble horn in the upper half. You can hear the 2 rotors ramping up at different speeds in the Vent and the Leslie very clearly.

    I am not sure why you do not have the best Univibe out there today...Made by Bob Sweet The Mojo Vibe that uses REAL Photocells by Sweet Sound totally blows away any other Vibe in its class. I get that classic Leslie tone easily with mine. I have heard the others Deja-Vibe, and all the rest they don't come close to the Mojo Vibe.

    Thanks for your post. I’m subscribing, I like the shoot out format. I’ve seen a few of your demos. Honestly don’t know why more people don’t use a looper? It is a great control. It is also great to get a general over view of a bunch of different pedals, fast. I also like how your videos look. However, it would have been great to have a loop where you bring the effect in. I really need to know what happens when bring the effect in vs. the dry sound? How dramatic is the volume and/or tone drop? I know there is a perceived volume drop with vibrato, rotary, tremolo effects in general. Some pedals can compensate, some can’t.
    I have a TC Vibraclone, which actually sounds ok as a stand alone kind of effect (when you can compensate for the volume and tone drop off). I can’t use it on my board. Plus you have to manually switch between speeds. I really want a good rotary effect, that I can switch speeds on on the fly, can stand up in the mix of pedals (doesn’t drop the volume or tone too much), and isn’t too complicated to use...oh, right and doesn’t cost more than $200! ;)
