If you think about it, the plot of Mortal Kombat 1 is literally a fictional character's fanfiction about how they'd make the world better, but is interrupted by another fictional character's fanfiction universe colliding with theirs
I loved this story mode, it was so ridiculous in the best way possible. Also I love that Mileena, Baraka and Reptile are all on the good side for sure this time and even get something good in the end.
Do you prefer it to MK11 is it better?

The MK story modes have always been like a 80s/90s action movie. It’s surprisingly holds up every game. It’s not the absolutely best thing in the world but it’s very entertaining.

I've never been so happy with Reptile, and making him a good guy, I think, was a great choice to do more with him than they were able to before. Being a jobber just didn't go anywhere. I love him, now.
you don't need to be a good guy to have a good character plot. It's called being a good writer and not taking the easy way out. FIrst time I saw the "new" reptile. I asked where batman was.

I think Ed Boon finally listened to the fanbase where everyone in the fandom knows that Reptile CONSTANTLY gets shit on. Always. So Ed Boon probably was like, "I can do better" and he did.
I like reptile as a villain but I wish he'd have more relevance as a villain too. Hero reptile is meh for me personally but I get it.
Multiverse plot reached it's peak with Jet Li's "the One" and it never been better since

MK1 is basically a Deadly Alliance Requel and a Celebration to every Era from the Past 30 Years that’s a 8 out of 10.
Love this story because you can actually feel for so many of the characters, like Reptile, Baraka or Mileena, just to name a few. Also i like how there's finally a happy ending of sorts, and the general good vibes this story has to it. Amazing work!

I think them changing the way characters play each game is a good thing because it allows veteran players to take their time to learn new stuff rather than already being unstoppable forces of nature to the newbies.

Exactly. The og characters in street fighter literally play the same in every game. That gets boring. Like I literally didn’t wanna touch ryu or ken in sf6 cause of this. We gotta commend NRS for switching the characters combos and moves every game. It makes you want to learn

Ending on injustice 2 didnt do it for me. They did a poor job of explaining how heroes like batman can go fisticofs with aquaman and black adam, sure we know it's the pills but the people who didnt start with injustice 1 doesnt know that, plus ending is rushed as hell. @@Roachh2877

not even, its just "cinematic" cause high production value and marvelisms in tone and style but the story falls apart by act 3 forward
I loved that they made Baraka more prominent in this game. He was always just an evil henchmen, and now that gave him a bit of a leader and outgoing role. On top of the fact that he’s still the most recognizable of his species because he’s the most tame and intelligent, not letting the disease completely take him over like it has the rest, it’s amazing. And I also love he was the first one we did the “Test Your Might” on
I'm excited to see this. Got my kids MK1 for XMAS so that's good news for me come time for me to remind them who is still game king of the house.
MK1 is truly awesome. Sindel being the queen we always wanted, the reptile chapter, the callback to deadly alliance and the ending. So much good stuff. And it seems like we might get future character customization with that ending fight lol. Ed and the whole mk team did amazing with this game.
I binged this game in like 7 hours. I actually really enjoy it. The story is fun and there's a perfect amount of comedy in it. The kombat isn't overdone and the rank system is great. The character roster too is AMAZING!!!

I feel like Ed and his team really made almost each playable character extremely likable in their own way, some more then others. The small variations on the stories like Scorpion vs Sub Zero or Mileena and Katana were also awesome. It was definitely the most excited I’ve been for their story mode in a while due to all the changes and wanting to see how well they execute all of it
MK1 is a bit of a step down from 11 for me right now. The gameplay feels great and I love the new aerial combos/kameos. But it’s missing a few things like you mentioned in your video. Another thing I miss is being able to pin combos. It was so helpful while learning a new character.
Definitely a step down for me and no co op wtf how you make invasions without co op and talisman system is trash mk11 augment system shit on MK1

I enjoyed more than the actual recent Mortal Kombat Movie, even if is toned down in violence, I think this would made a great adaptation.

The special effects behind Li Mei's moves just sold me. She is so flashy and awesome to play.

Man I love that SF6 and MK1 are great games. It's really awesome to see a fighting game renaissance/revival. Now if Tekken 8 can pull it off too.

T8 will blow them away. Not saying it'll a "better fighting game" because they're not the same genre, so it's not for the same kind of players.
But since T8 will come out many months after SF6, and a few months after MK1, it'll probably bother some features from both those games, and will have the best features :D

@@Mad77max77 so far the t8 gameplay looks fire, they also bring back tekken ball which is great. however, the downhill is customization totally lack rosters kinda 50/50 filled with clones. hoping can be better
I am so glad that you are given Netherrealm their respect in regards to elevating story attribute in fighting games. No one can touch them.
yeah theyve been absurdly far ahead in fighting game storytelling since mk9 and havent let off the gas since. rest of the fighting games havent made much effort to catch up and thats why despite the restrictive mechanics, NR always far outsells their competitors

That's partially because "professional" game reviewers at the main websites are mostly shills anyway.
Baraka and Reptile certified best bois. Nice that they finally got some time to shine.
The weakest part, unfortunately, is Megan Fox’s voice acting for Nitara imo. Not that she’s a poor actress, but it’s usually 50/50 when it comes to big actors/celebrities voicing a video game character because they haven’t dug into that realm as much. And unfortunately, Megan Fox as Nitara didn’t work out for me (some may like her voice acting for Nitara, which is fine. You do you). But everything else in MK1 is chef’s kiss. One of the best video games I've played and enjoyed this year.

NRS sacrificed an entire character's potential quality just to market the game with Megan Fox right before release. That's low.
The character tower endings act as canon epilogues to the story and they’re really good.

You're absolutely right, I felt the EXACT same way! I thought it was just me lol. I told my friend the story was good but I felt like they did too much and I just didn't expect them to go the whole way on this first game of the reboot. I thought they would stretch the story over 2 or 3 but they went the whole way on this one game which, for me made it feel like it was too much for one game. The last act just felt rushed in my opinion.
@@sclay757 I can see why some will dislike the story. I think Neatherealm wanted to pay tribute to all the 3d era games in one crazy multiverse story. At one point I just had to laugh hey, and then you either hate it or go with it I think.
But yeah, the last 30 minutes to an hour did few rushed and a little out of nowhere. Am keen though to see what comes next now that hopefully all the timeline stuff is done with.

I felt they played with the expectations of the players about some characters, that was particular on Syndel's case, I keep asking until the end ''is she evil? I she not?'', I liked that effort, my biggest critic was not of they breaking the universe on two, but in how they made the multiverse, even if that makes cannon every ending on Mortal Kombat, that also devaluates the special theme on the endings, specially on 11 and the arc from 9-11, if everyone is a Titan, then noone is special -like syndrome says-.
But I enjoyed the game, it has really hard work in it and I hope rocks in sells because it's deserved.
I gotta show love on how this is the first time Mortal Kombat made Baraka look badass! Baraka always seemed, to me, the #1 punching bag on legs in this series. This time, Baraka showed to be a genuine great character to play, and his attacks looked awesome.
Very fair review. I guess what keeps the core player base interested is the competitive aspect of the game, and therefore the polish if the mechanics.

I loved that you had the option to pick your character for the finale of the story. That way you could feel like your best boy or girl was important. Hope they do more with that concept in the future.

The story is great. It's so wacky that it just devolves into something that Midway would make in the closing hour.

Now this is a review by a true fan. You nailed all the talk points I wanted to hear about of Invasions and Towers.
The story was so good it felt so good to experience like the new origins for some characters like kenshi, baraka, reptile and more. This game is packed with lots of things that u can do, I had grided like 2 days of the invasion and it was worth it
Final arc felt like their version of Endgame lol
Just like Mortal Kombat 9 was a celebration of 1-3, you're right when you say this feels like a celebration of Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon.
It is weird that Sonya, Jax, and Kano aren't in the story, but oh well...
Jax is in the after ending so technically he's in the story.

My personal review
Gameplay: Faster than MK11, breakers, more kombo routes thanks to kameos, more creative fatalities 10/10
Story: Had great build up at first but the second half felt a bit rushed and the jobber problem still exists. Although I enjoyed the hell out of the final chapter. 6.5/10
Roster: Kept the staples like scorpion, sub zero, liu kang... while bringing back 3D fan favorites like li mei, havik, ashrah, reiko... 10/10
Towers: The characters' ending art and the story it tells is one of the best in the NRS era but the lack of intro dialogues is a bummer 7/10
Invasions: A missed opportunity to make this a konquest mode. Most of the challenges are fun but some of them are just absurd. Thankfully, it's not as grindy as MK11. 8/10
Practice: One of the best in a fighting game. It has a lot of what MK11 tutorial has to offer as well as kombo trials. 9/10. -1 for removing pinning moves.
Kustomization: Only one gear to kustomize and no option to change your kustomized skin on the select screen. I don't mind the fact that the intro animations aren't as cinematic since 90% of people skip them anyway but we need more options to kustomize skins 5/10
The overall game is pretty great and I would recommend it whether you're a newcomer or a hardcore fan. I would give it 8.5/10
I agree with your point about choosing unpopular characters. You are more likely to win if you use a seldom used character. You come across 100 scorpions then you learn how to block all his moves. No one is going to know all of lei mei’s moves because no one uses her. I used nightwolf in mk11 for the same reason

I have similar feeling towards the whole multiverse, different timeline angle of the story. I really feel like they shoot their load in MK11 too much with that idea in mind. Having old characters meeting their younger counterpart, timeline shenanigans. Was hoping they go with more in-timeline issues instead multiverse. But I guess it's kind of hard to go from MK11 to basic story.
The main villain is Shang tsung, but not that one, it’s the one from the a different timeline, but not the one from your timeline, a one from a different multiverse. And he is in a deadly alliance with Quan chi? But not the normal Quan chi, one from a different timeline who just so happens to have the same exact plan.
I just want to point something out about the Kameo Fighters. When I saw earlier previews of the gameplay, I was like, "Guess we're not picking different fighting variations anymore." Which got me down a bit, cause that added some interesting level of strategy and mixing things up in the fights. Then when I closer look at the Kameo Fighters mechanic, I realized that it's still kind of the same thing, just in a different scenario entirely. So I'm glad that Netherrealm was able to still keep some of that aspect from the past games.

The story for MK 1 is amazing! The re-inmaging of the the characters in the New Era was an amazing to see. Reptile (my favorite character), Baraka, Mileena and other characters have been done soo much justice with their new story. Design-wise, the game is beautiful. The characters redesign is top notch and the stages are gorgeous! The storyline however....for 2/3 I was really digging it. It's not bad, but the reveal in the 3rd Act however... I feel like they missed an opportunity to introduce a MK villain that hasn't been seen since the 3D era. The ending however.... promises a very interesting route!
The 3rd act was just awful. So it’s “super Armageddon”? What were the stakes? Every death was pointless because there is an infinite amount of characters now. Having the power of a titan is useless now because everyone has that same power.
I watched all the cut scenes the other day, and started out really enjoying it. It did get very wonky at the end. I agree that the whole Multiverse shoved down your throat aspect was okay-fine, but predictable. The retake on Raiden and Kung Lou, Meelina and Sindel, Baraka, felt fresh. I enjoyed watching them.
Multiverse and time travel has been so played out. Death and consequences has no value anymore.

I'd take the concept of timelines, ones of which that actually had events effect not only its own but other timelines, over the multiverse crap we've had over recent years. If anything, they did it 90% better than any of their own movies and Marvel.

Wish there was more kenshi and Johnny cage I was really enjoying there friendship growing. Also love how you mention things to trophy hunters I am definitely a trophy hunter and I am currently working on this platinum. So far very enjoyable experience 👌
Unrelated but can we talk about how Reiko has balls of steel? Everyone is a magic user or has a superpower but then there’s Reiko who has a spear, shurikens and strength. Dude is the Deathstroke of Mortal Kombat.
I feel like the kameos really add significant depth to the gameplay and make this the most interesting the game has felt in a long time. Even though there will always of course be "meta" ones that are popular (ex: Sareena), I think they did a really good job with making a lot of them interesting. It really feels like you can find a kameo to enhance the strengths or cover for any weakness your character may have. I do really hope they update some things like adding back voice lines to modes like tower and maybe some QOL stuff, but I personally am loving this MK.
Funny I definately feels like cameos are like intrusions in wrestling. It completely destroys the credibility of the match. I understand that it can be a great gaming mechanics. But I cant stand them. Until there is an option for turn them off - MK1 is no go for me. It totaly ruins the feel of the game.

The game was a blast honestly. I enjoyed the story mode even with the craziness towards the end. Sad that there is no krypt, but I really enjoy invasions. I think the one thing that would super help with the towers in invasion or just in general, a map. A map to help you see what the rewards are for towers or to help you not get lost. Just a minor thing.
The quality of the story mode in MK1 is on-par and in some cases better than most popular anime shows. What a time to be alive.

Only in this timeline. But in the alternate timeline anime IS Mortal Kombat. But we destroyed that timeline, so the timeline is null.

Was a 10/10 for like the first 2/3s of the game, then devolved into typically mk nonsense that has 1000 plot holes, and the multiverse stuff etc etc messy messy messy, wouldve been amazing if they divided this game up into two games and the second game focused on the wars between dimensions, allowing it to actually get the time it deserves

I love how Baraka, Reptile and Mileena turn from jobbers into the biggest highlights of the story mode. at least for me.
I want an MK anime so bad. I don’t play the games but I watch the cut scenes and relish in the incredible stories they have. I loved the animated films but I want something long format 🐲🀄️🐲🀄️

Haven’t had a chance to pick up this game yet, but the original Mortal Kombat was the first video game I ever played. Glad to hear Smoke is finally getting the love he deserves.

I found all the alignment changes really interesting. Even Shao Khan isn’t necessarily evil, sure he’s on the evil side but he only wants what he thinks is best for his world.
I definitely get what you’re saying Jeremy, but because the story is personally my favorite of the Netherrealm era, as is the roster, this is definitely my favorite MK game thus far!
I miss watching you and Angry Joe go at it at gaming conventions for each new MK games. Hopefully we'll get to see another one once they inevitably release a new installment.
Reptile has been my main so far. Love his combo potential and his design is perfect.
Still need to try out most of the roster but Reiko and Sindel (plus my boy Baraka) are other favorites.
The heart center of the main story is definitely *Empress Sindel* and Mileena with Li Mei and Kitana to complete with Jerrod/Ermac and feat Jade.
All the other characters are more build surround it.🥰

Loving story mode on MK1 so far, especially Johnny's character development from Chapter 2 (I'm on Chapter 6). However, I am finding myself enjoying the grinding the last few Stage 5 Character Towers I need in MK11, because of the AI battle option. I can grind rewards in the background while at my desk, or just doing some things around the house. Yet we have to remember that the standard edition just came out today, and those of us who got the Premier Edition have only had four days to tear into MK1.

No spoilers here but as impressive as the cinematics and overall scope was, I still feel like MK1 suffers from the same old NRS problems It's stories have always been affected by from the whole one character per chapter thing that makes them the only important/competent person in their scene with the most fodder the moment it's the next characters turn to shine, as well as a bunch of filler fights, that only happens because the characters are way too stubborn and in some cases, completely brain-dead to actually talk to each other about important things for more than 2 seconds before throwing hands.
Brilliant game, brilliant writing...best MK game ever.

I read-up on the multiverse bit you were talking about, and as someone who LOATHES the concept, I was like "Oh shoot... this actually sounds awesome". I might actually want to give the game a shot to see how it plays-out which is insane coming from a guy like me lol???

Yeah I get it's ANOTHER multiverse story but I feel like it was done so well. I started playing MK with Deadly Alliance so with this story like you said calls back to those games and it was awesome.
This looks better than MK11 to me just because of the use of much more color.

This game here made a great weekend for myself and my partners. I had no idea that all of them were mortal kombat fans in some way. We were suppose to play board games for th eweekend and turned the dinner and board game weekend to waking up at 4am each day as each of us watched or played the game until it was done.
THis story was on point. Everyone was absolutely rivetted at every twist and turn.
As a animator one stand out thing for me is the mouth animation and expressions, it's next level.
