    It has been a different winter. Here in SE Michigan, zone 6, we've just had what I consider to be only our 2nd real snowfall, something worth shoveling. I still had volunteer romaine lettuce starts in the ground in Dec., thriving nicely with just leaf litter for protection. Hope yesterday's snowfall helps to insulate them against single digit temps today & tomorrow. Of course, if they survive the winter, they may immediately bolt in the spring. Gardening is a just a series of annual experiments.

    Another great video Patrick. Between you and Charles Dowding, in England, who you turned me on to last year, gets me through the winter, until I can start planting my seeds, for my garden in the spring. I wish all gardeners could watch you and Charles videos to see how easy gardening can be, and stop digging, and just spread compost on the garden. Well Patrick, I’ll get off my soapbox for now. Nice to see you again Patrick! Im all set up to start some seeds in my basement tomorrow. I have ginger and turmeric sprouting already as i want to be ahead before spring arrives. I had good success with winter-sowing in jugs last year so im going to do that again as well, adding some tomatoes, eggplant and peppers to the experiment! Ill let you know how that goes. In the meantime, im watching the sun move slowly southward across the sky, even though it is 25 with blowing snow today. Tomorrow's forecast? 40 and sunny! Yay Arkansas!

    It has been staying in the upper 40's/low 50's in Tacoma with only the occasional hard frost, so definitely mild here so far, I have peas still producing (but the mildew is awful alas) and my broad beans, planted in the Fall, are attempting to flower---we usually get at least one snow fall in winter and Jan-March are the coldest months here usually, but I am going to play around by direct seeding some of the cold hardy crops like onions and peas under fleece and see what happens.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Yeah, you should be able to start onions and peas pretty early there. We start peas in mid-February under double cover. I wonder if growing under plastic would help with moisture related issues there?

      Thanks! We don't water at all from December through mid-February, because plants don't need water during this period of cold temperatures. Outside of that time period, we water the hoop house with a watering can or garden hose. For the rest of the year, we water the garden with a garden hose. We don't have to water much, because we get quite a bit of rain. I hope this helps!

    I am interested in how you store your vegetables and get them to last so long after harvest. Is this something you would consider doing a video on? (If you haven't done so previously)

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Hi Emma! We eat most of our harvests fresh, but we do freeze some tomatoes, dry some peppers, and store sweet potatoes, winter squash, pumpkins, and garlic. These crops are all very easy to store.

    I love your videos! The fact that you are in Chicago makes it even more awesome! I would love to have a food forest in my back yard (doesn't everyone). The problem is that I have never had an edible garden before aside from growing herbs in window boxes. My husband is concerned that whatever we grow will become contaminated by the many alley rats in our neighborhood. He might not want to partake in the whole process let alone eating anything we might grow. What do you do to prevent rodents getting into your garden. I know you have a cat and that might be enough but is there anything i can do considering I don't own a cat?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Thanks Angelica! I wouldn't worry about rats contaminating crops. We've never had a problem with them in our garden, and Oscar is in the house most of the time. One thing to keep in mind is that there are wild animals around all farms, including farms that grow food sold in grocery stores. Rodents can also get into areas where farm crops are stored, transported, and sold. The important thing is to wash crops before eating them, whether they come from the grocery store or the garden.

    Was showing my husband how you have your green house, we have a green house but doesn't not have the wooden supports inside, learning process, question I do have is about what looks like insulation, the silver fabric, 1st, what is it exactly, 2nd, how has it helped, 3rd, are both sides silver, and 4th, with it being so high on the one side, how does it help

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Hi! We're using this reflective bubble insulation on the north wall: amzn.to/2ATQisp It provides a little extra insulation on the north wall and reflects light from the south back into the hoop house. Both sides are silver. We have it from the ground to close to the top to maximize insulation and reflection. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for your very informative, helpful videos. My question regarding nitrogen fixing legumes and their use in the home garden. My research seems to say that planting legumes to fix nitrogen into the soil is only beneficial if you incorporate the whole plant into the soil. How does that (and use of other cover crops) sync with the no-till gardening idea? Leaving the plant as mulch on top appaently releases the nitrogen into the air and thus makes is useless for the gardener, but digging it into the soil destroys bacteria and other beneficial soil life. To dig or not to dig cover crops?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      I view nitrogen fixation by legumes as one part of a holistic system that provides our plants with all the nitrogen they need (without using any fertilizer). The amount of shared nitrogen isn't significant from the perspective of industrial agriculture, and doesn't meet all of the nitrogen requirements of neighboring plants, but it doesn't have to. Because it's just one part of a holistic system. Regarding mulch, though some nitrogen is lost, there's a net gain in nitrogen from organic mulches. I share more details in this video: ruclips.net/video/a6rNsWbWLhQ/видео.html

    so Patick, your theory before was the lack of light was the primary inhibitor to growth. does this mean adding heat to the hoophouse could be a good investimet? or have you also had less cloudiness that is letting in more light?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Charles! Both cold and lack of light are limiting factors, but it's the combination of the two that normally stops growth in December here. I don[t think it would be a good investment to heat our hoop house because we're already getting excellent results without supplemental heat.

    I searched and did not find a video for watering during spring and summer months. Would love to see a video on watering. Also, do you use drip irrigation?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Todd! I don't talk about watering much, because we're fortunate to get quite a bit of rain and don't have to water often. When we do water in spring, summer, and fall, we use a garden hose. We don't have to water the winter garden from December through mid-February because the plants don't need additional water at that time of year.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Hi Josh! The only other thing we did that you didn't mention was to add an extra layer of plastic insulation on the bottom half of the north wall. Of course, the double cover is essential for our zone, and you'll want to make your greenhouse as airtight as you can. Best wishes with your greenhouse!

      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      We don't water from early December through mid-February. Normally, plants don't grow during this period. Even with the growth we're seeing this winter, we haven't watered because the soil stays pretty moist because of the humidity in the hoop house.
