DIY Woodworking - Toddler/Kiddies Bed - My Child's First Bed

- It's time for my boy to move over to his own bed.
In this video, I build a toddler/kiddies bed for my 2-year-old son. The bed needed to be low enough for him to get in and out himself. It also required rails so he wouldn't roll off the bed while sleeping. Finally, I also wanted to add some storage under the bed for toys or clothes.

For this project, I drew inspiration from Casual DIY's version of a toddler bed. Though different, his was the starting point for my design.

Love your project videos as much as your shop project videos. You shouldn’t hesitate to post videos like these
I like the mix of video types, it's difficult to find wood working channels any more that aren't just tool salesmen.
I second that!
Third 👍🏼
I can't remember the last time 731 Woodworks posted a building video. So sad, because they were so beginner-friendly.
It's great to see the shop in use for other things than just more shop furniture as well. And I think it can be a great inspiration for some people. Some other woodworkers can seem a bit far removed from normal folks with their fancy tools. Sure, you've got some fancy tools as well, but not quite to the same degree.
Hope you're all doing well.
I enjoy both types of videos. Keep doing both.
I liked the none shop orientated video from time to time. Reminders of of why most of us have shops, for the stuff we can produce from them.
Exactly!
I like the non shop focused videos. With all the shop upgrades, the non shop videos give us a bit of context of the type of stuff you use your tools for outside the shop. Constantly upgrading the shop and tools start to loose meaning when all it looks like it for is to constantly upgrade it more. A mix of the two is nice.
Another voice saying that we don't mind seeing project videos. There's only so much "small shop organization" that a guy can do without running out of projects or redoing existing ones. So go for it. I'm here for it.
Everytime I watch your stuff, it inspires me to get off my butt and work in my shop! Such a great vid, keep it up!
Hope your son loves his new big boy bed that Dad made. Great project.
Why would he not like it? His DAD made it for me. BTW i would ask you child what color he wants on his first bed :D
I would disagree with the comment that this project is off topic, Woodworking is also using the shop, and what no better way that you can demonstrate how the shop infrastructure that you've built out works in the context of a project once in a while. And I'm sure you son will love his new bed. Cheers.
You are verry talented and I really appreciate your builds.
This was great. It's always good to see what one builds in the ultimate shop.
I love that you at last made something other than the endless shop upgrades. Not that they are bad but I think in the end variety is the spice of life. And wow what a nice bed for your son. I will love to make my grand kid one once he/she is here in a few months and when the cot becomes to small. As you can hear I still have some time to go till then but I will remember this video.
…major congratulations!…
That was quite therapeutic to watch with the voice over and I’m up for a bit of variety one person said a great statement that most woodworking channels have become tool salesmen which is so true
i like watching all making videos, if you make it i would be quite happy to watch it, everyone has a use for house furniture as well as shop related content. Thanks for showing this.
Great looking piece of furniture for you Son there Sir. He will be very proud of his Dad when he's older and see's how meticulously to craft things especially one juts for him.
Loved seeing this project, and also loved how you respond to "voting" in the comments. Everything you do is interesting. Shop projects are to make home and other projects possible, so mix it up!
I like both the shop projects and the non-shop projects. Shops don't exist for their own sake usually, but as a means to make goods for other parts of one's life, so seeing you use your shop to make stuff that will serve you elsewhere works for me:-).
Always’great job John …..
Hope.little John is’doing well…..
Could you give me dimensions since i find your bed very élégant ? Thx
I d like to have more info about dimensions, as your furniture is rather élégant:
Posts section and length , all heights, Same for all prisonlike pieces and distance between them all length ……..
In fact , a plan with all thé dimensions …….thx so much (my nefew is waiting for a babyboy 😉 then guess my intention …..)
Refreshing seeing you put that hyper organized shop to use with a build video. You are very good at both types of content...I think a balance of both types of content is nice.
Keep it like this brother. Its good imo because it gives us a variety of builds to watch and not just one type of videos coming out.
If you enjoy building it, we'll probably enjoy watching it. Try not to get too hung up on "what the audience wants", just enjoy yourself while building it and the views will follow. Try not to be too insecure about your content, you got this far, don't start overthinking things now! Glad to see you back in action!
I Love how you lovingly caress everything when you are done with it. And, any content is good content - I'd like more like this
I don't see this as off-topic at all. It's a woodworking project, and a mighty good one at that. Keep these vids coming! Not everything has to be shop furniture and organization.
Projects are great - even those outside the shop. I am here to see your creativity, whether that is in the shop or outside of it. I loved the 'deck in the middle of nowhere' project. Keep up the good work and please take care of your health.
As a fellow Capetown (Intermediate) Woodworker myself i take inspiration from video's like these to take my skills further and try new and bigger projects. Keep up the great work and go ahead by posting new and different videos as long as its a video of you making a new project in your workshop for your workshop or for your family & house it is still great to watch.
Nice job 👍🏼 I think any videos you come up with that includes working in your wood-shop/ garage would still fit your theme. Making furniture for your family is definitely welcome.
Thanks very much for such an engrossing video. I think it would be nice to have project videos from time to time. It would be nice if you could build a child's swing with slide or a jungle gym for your son. Your son may only be 2 years old but he will soon grow up fast and will want to explore the outside world, I am sure!
A mix of both kinda video would be super cool, I enjoyed this
I'd forgotten about the truck display case for diecast cars.
Yeah, build shop gear, a deck, toys, a dog house, a boat, what ever you want, man. I'll keep watching.
YES, a mix of home and shop projects! Beautiful job on the bed. I'm thinking a clear coat finish would be best as you can see the grain and the wood is protected and easily cleaned.
Love seeing the shop in action! Observing while you work shares techniques, tips and tricks. Hope you are inspired to express yourself by sharing any project you choose! Beautiful bed.
I love shop related videos but this was a nice treat. We have our shops so we can make things so it's nice to see how you make things in the shop you created. It was a little nostalgic for me because my baby is 23 years old. Cheers!
A proper woodworking video. Best regards from sunny England (at last).
Basic projects like this show way more than you think. Us beginners need tips that you might not even be trying to show but they're there anyway. The mix of shop/non-shop videos is great.
I love the kid's furniture video, and seeing more would be great. My child is about the same age, and the idea of furniture that I can build instead of buying is really helpful.
As long as it´s woodworking, any video will be great!
Great design! I like the addition of these different types of projects. Basically, if you build it, I'd like to see it.
Loved the bed you made for your son. I enjoy both your shop and home furnishings videos. So I'm fine with either.
Do what you like to do as long as it woodworking related with you it is great love watching what you do you have help me with my small shop so much .
I was one of the guys who said I'd watch this video, so thanks for posting it👍
I like both types but lately the shop organization has become less interesting, to me at least, so this little project was a perfect break from that. So definitely more of these project builds
Nah, dude, it's still woodworking and imo, still on topic and brand. Good vid.
Nice job on your sons new bed.
Wonderful Jean. I hope he loves his new bed. More please!
100% do more videos of this type as well. I like the voiceover format that allowed you to concentrate on the build. Great video
I like what you did. I would like to more of the different things .😎
Great Build !
Happy Birthday to your son.
Voiceover was/is fine
Videos of this sort of “off-topic” are just fine. You, do you.
Love the build videos mixed in with the shop vids, always great to hear from other woodworkers in SA !!!
Amazing work, Jean! It looks beautiful! 😃
Tomasz is a great guy indeed!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
That will be a safe and comfy bed for your son. The storage drawer is brilliant. Consider chamfering the top and bottom of the legs. As is they are very sharp edges.
More is always better 😊
I’m happy to watch anything you build.
I also enjoy the non-shop related projects!
Hey Jean-
I think that the multi-functional or space saving household items are a great way to tie in the use of the small shop and the great things you can do with it once you have it.
I loved this project and will definitely build one for my little niece who just turned 2 yr old. However, I really prefer your shop related projects. There are loads of channels that show how to build all of the "regular" woodworking things like furniture, but there are few who make the kinds of highly thought out and yet easily built shop projects for the person with very limited space.
smart move by clamping the timber when installing the threaded inserts. prevent chances of splitting
I LOVE that bed!!!! I wish I had a little again so I could build one! Wonderful job, and honestly, I lived the voiceovers, I feel like that gave you the opportunity to explain things more in depth. Fantastic video and not at all off-topic for a woodworking channel!!
Nice video once again 😀 I think it's refreshing to see what is actually made in the optimised workshop, besides seeing the workshop being optimised, which is awesome too!. Even if it may seem a bit 'more generic' or 'less interesting' I still very much appreciate your take on building and creating things.
If people don't like these kind of videos they can skip them, but I think there are plenty enough of viewers / subscribers appreciating these ones 🙂
Great video and I love the designof the bed. Very recently I built built-in bunk beds for our 2 boys and it was my very first woodworking project. Builts like this one are a great reminder of why we do this .. and it's not the views
Enjoyed the video a lot. Nice bed, simple design, but still very elegant. I like a variety of topics, so build videos are vey welcome. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great build video! I think a mix of shop and build videos is great - you have some great ideas in both
All build videos are good videos. I liked it and I actually like the voiceover style video. I get to hear what you have to say but the build isn’t interrupted. I also enjoyed the sound of the rain in the background. Made me want to get out to my shop even though it isn’t raining here.
I like the variety. If I had to lean one direction or another, I do appreciate the shop projects but ultimately, mixing it up is great. By far my favorite channel so more content is always great!
For what it is worth ... Your Videos are Awesome! I missed you when there was a Pause! I wish My Brain worked like yours!! ... That Aside, wearing your heart on your sleeve is not lost on me.
to Answer your question as to Content ... Shop builds, home builds, builds for Friends... Silly Builds I will watch them all!!!
Keep these vids Coming My Friend!
very nice bed. enjoyed that a whole lot. pls do more builds like this.
*Kia ora (hello) A lovely cute bed for a toddler.... so at some stage in the future, you will be building a bigger bed as the toddler grows in length 🙂 kia kaha (stay strong) and keep on being well 🙂nz*
Enjoyable video. Great job done on the bed 😊
Awesome, Thanks for sharing. You make it look So Easy... 😊
I would like to see more outside the shop videos.
Another really interesting and informative video. Thanks for sharing it - I love your channel! Greetings from Gold Coast, Australia!
great job , more videos like this to add to your channel
I like this kind of videos
Love it, its a cool looking bed.
Well done! Love these kind of videos
Always awesome ever! Thanks Genius Man.
Loved this video and am looking at making a bed for my son as well. Thank you!
Just found your channel. Great Video! I like these types of projects.
Nice seeing the shop in action and how it functions building something. Do you miss the ultimate all in one work bench you had?
Another great video bed looks good
Nice work! I like this type of video.
Hi Man. Love from KZN. I would prefer a mix. The shop built is interesting, but I like projects like this more.
Another ace video.
If you happen to be in Scotland feel free to make me a version for two larger people!
Lovely work 👏
I loved it
Anything woodworking!
Hi nice job brill vid thank you
Great video ❤ I agree both types are great!
I wonder if maybe some type of latch on the bed drawer so curious little minds don’t try to pull it out?
Awesome!
great job keep it up
Good Job
If you planed and chamfered the long pieces of wood before cutting them to length it would have saved you a lot of time
good job👍👍
Cute bed and love the additional storage. Only question is how do you climb in there beside him to read him his bed time stories?
Do both!
Great video and very nice design. I'm curious why you didn't just use the threaded inserts everywhere and skip the round nut inserts. I like seeing you build stuff like this - shows that one can do more involved and creative projects, even in a small shop.
@@paulberger6540 for me, the threaded inserts aren't strong enough. I designed the bed to handle the weight of an adult for if I ever need to sit with my son for whatever reason.
Great job!
Post what makes you happy!!! Variety is nice, but it is your channel, after all. Ignore the butt heads who say negative things. Block them and forget them.
I am however interested in your multifuction workshop table is coming along because i wana build one to for mine. Other than that im good with the videos that have been coming out
Hey, love the videos. Why not categorize videos like this one as a series with a subtitle like, "Woodshop Junkies: Bedroom Furniture Edition" or something like that?
