I just like this musical. Ms Streisand is perfect for this. The singing, choreography, cinematography is superb. They don't make movies like this anymore.
Barbra Streisand is the perfect actress for this role. What a power vocal set she has! Love her classy acting. Cant believe she was only 27 in this film!!! That's my age!
The amazing thing about those old movies is that they actually built the lavish sets, and you can tell. The majority of The Harmonia Restaurant set would now be done by CGI. And it would just cheapen the feel of the film.

I can't watch or listen to musicals like this without wanting to cry, because they remind me of how much my late father loved watching them. Hello, Dolly and Singing in the Rain were his ultimate favorites and anything with Fred Astaire
My dear just go with it so mny fail to realize the very essence of life is not the physical minutiae, the expensive cars, clothes, houses all trivial/mundane bullshit.....the blessing is in the precious memories...your childs 1st steps, words,laugh...mother/fathers/husband/wife laugh,touch,hug....walking your daugher dwn the isle...your son's 1st touch down, daughter's 1st date....watch Streisand take joy in remembering your daddy as you watch...let the tears of remembrance flow....there is a blessing in every tear you shed....GOD BLESS!!!!
Forget the critics! Barbra had this role in the bag... great performance. Never mind age appropriateness or deviation from the script.. this "red head" Dolly nailed it oh so well
Barbara looks absolutely beautiful in this movie! Her red hair looks so natural and it complements her lovely complexion. She is fabulous in this movie, although she's too young to play the middle-aged Dolly as written by Thornton Wilder. She personally doesn't like this movie, but that's too bad, Barb! You were so amazing!
I didn't know Barbra didn't like this movie of herself. Are you sure? Where did you read that? I think she does an amazing job with Dolly. There was nobody else who could have acted this role more convincingly.
The music score for this classic movie is incredible. The choreography is on point. I can only imagine how many times they practice it before they say this is it. And last but not least, I love me some Barbra Streisand. I can listen to her 24/7. 2/2/2023
When I first heard the Republican cheer squad yell Let's Make America great again! in my mind, it spelled a return to the era of wonderful musicals and iconic stage performances. Oh well...
The way everything goes silent and when the camera pans up there's Dolly standing on the stairs in that beautiful dress and her feathers 🥹💝. The first time I saw that scene (yesterday) my eyes filled with tears. Beautiful, Barbra 0:46
One of my all time fav musicals. I dont like many but love this one. Scenes like this one, and the sound track to 'Mame' with the dance are lovely, beings back a lot of memories watching them with mum...and now my daughter.❤
Jerry Herman wrote the score for both "Dolly" & "Mame". He was a gifted songwriter, lyricist, and storyteller. Also a gracious person and known not to be egotistic or temperamental. He got along with (and appreciated the talent of) all of the stars of his stage & screen works,
If I did my math correctly, Barbra was only 27 years old when this movie was released in December 1969. Yet she plays the part of a widowed middle-aged woman, a profile appropriate for Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey. In the end the studio was more concerned with star power and Barbra did a great take on the Dolly Levi role.
what ppl fail to realize is that Barbara is in such a great head space here the positive energy she is exuding cld fill a stadium....She is in her element here in this very moment...in her prime...doing what she loves doing n knws she was meant to do.....all eyes on her as she comes dwn the stairs....the vocals were pre-recorded but they are 100% her vocals n in her prime barbara cld not be touched vocally n she knew it.....n we are watching the finished product.....imagine the time that when into rehearsals to deliver this performance.
Maybe they figured that if they were casting a character named "Dolly Levi," that that someone needed to be unabashedly Jewish. As far as singing actresses on Broadway with the star power they looked for, Barbra Streisand was probably it. Don't forget this is the same Hollywood mindset that thought Audrey Hepburn would make a better screen Eliza Doolittle than Julie Andrews, despite the fact that Audrey Hepburn was all wrong for the prevailing esthetic of the period in which My Fair Lady is set.
@@BethDiane I hope I did not sound like I was complaining that Barbra ended up in the role. The studio's calculation was correct: people wanted to see her in a major singing role. Matching her up with the great Jerry Herman soundtrack was a great idea. She looked like she was having the time of her life.
@@mzmiller52 Those rumors were more than rumors. In one account Matthau made Barbra cry when he told her that no one on the set liked her. Apparently he felt that her star power was diminishing his. Or very possibly that she was often questioning Gene Kelly's direction.
this was a solid production.....they all stop n their heads turn....talk about an entrance....n barbara an odd beauty embraced her looks n made lemons made lemonade out of lemons....THAT VOICE!!!
I saw Hello Dolly live on Broadway. The first time with Ginger Rogers. She was unforgettable...a powerhouse and the next time with Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway and an all Black cast. Also unforgettable! Parts of the Pearl Bailey version can be found online.
When I first learned how old Dolly is meant to be when I saw this I just figured she was very youthful and beautiful naturally and that's why she really looks young here
Pity the film doesn't show Barbara's AMAZING figure because it really showed what a real woman should look like! She was so charismatic in this flim & as a very shy skinny teen I imagined that I could be just like her! This is Hollywood at its very best.
Hello Dolly was featured again by Bette Midler as Dolly Levi. I watched an excerpt of it , then switched to Barbra Streisand version and realized how good Barbra's performance was. It's just uncomparable.
Bette was great as Dolly, I saw it on Broadway w her...and I'm not a big Streisand fan, but I have to admit, her rendition of this song gave me chills...
I saw the movie with a sexy buxom Dolly. Must have been Bette Midler. I was about 15, she was sexy. Someday Ill watch it again when I feel like watching this chick flic out of.....
Midler was dreadful as dolly. She camped it up and can hardly sing or act. Ellen Greene would have been the perfect dolly. Midler was lousy as rose in her tv gypsy production as well.
Just from personal experience, with floor length gowns, if they aren't held up as you walk down stairs they flay out behind you as you descend, just like a long train. If you look carefully you will see that her dress here has a small train built out at the back bottom hem, shortening slightly as it comes around the front. That cut helps enunciate the visual effect of a long train as she descends, but it also keeps it short enough that when she dances it isn't under her feet, appearing to "disappear". Try this clip from 2:03 - 2:12 to get a better idea of how that can work for this particular dress: ruclips.net/video/MJVvzPs-JiQ/видео.html. Totally not saying they didn't shorten the dress, just noting it might be possible that they didn't have to.
Nice theory and very interesting. But completely wrong! If you've read anything about the filming of Hello Dolly, the choreographer Michael Kidd and the costume designer, Irene Sharif, had unreconcilable differences over the costume. The only solution was to have the train for the stairway shot, then remove it for the dancing sequences. Streisand surprisingly didn't have an opinion one way or another, but complained that she simply couldn't dance with the train, and kept tripping.
I've learned from my experience in music as a pianist for musicals that the better actor will always get the part over a better singer. Carol Channing knew how to put a song across and would be the first to admit that her singing was limited. However, both of these ladies bring there own special charm to the role. We are fortunate to have had both of these Dollys and many others throughout the years. Long live Dolly.
Carol Channing was good and I am glad that youtube gave me the opportunity to watch, evaluate and compare. Barbra's is was and always will be the significantly greater performance .
Dolly was sort of a clown-like character until Streisand got ahold of her. She brought womanly sex appeal to the role and her youth--so criticized at the time--gave Dolly a beauty and glamour that she never had before. Of course her mastery of the vocals is in a class by itself. This so-called "miscasting" resulted in one of the great musical comedy performances and a movie with timeless appeal. And that entrance!
@@paulheffron4836 Supposedly, when Barbra met Mae for the first time, Barbra allegedly told Mae she admired her and was channeling Mae's persona in "Dolly", West responded with a terse "I know".
