- This is part 1 of a Xenogears Character Study series. In this video, I talk about how Ramsus aligns with the Narcissitic personality of the psychological concept of a Dark Triad. In the 2nd and 3rd parts, I plan on talking about Miang and Grahf respectively.
If you enjoyed the video, please like and subscribe. If you didn't, please let me know how I can improve. Despite being a relatively short video, it took a lot of time to conceptualize.
Ramsus' story is something I will probably never forget. I played through the game back on the original PS1, & from the moment I saw him, I don't know how to describe it, but something just sort of clicked from the moment he appeared onscreen. I was always interested in seeing where his story would go, especially after the 1st fight (technically 2 back to back, but I count it as a 2 Phase fight). With all the berating he endured, I felt a lot of sympathy for the man. Then the grand reveal of his origin in Disc 2, that hit me so hard, my feelings on that still linger to this day. The only time I had such a strong reaction to another origin story was with Vanitas in the Birth By Sleep light novel. Reading his extended origin chapter drummed up so many familiar emotions from learning of Ramsus' origin, close to 20 years before.
it almost brought me to tears when the very girls that he rescued have been trying yo save him this whole time thought of him so much more than trash.Very underated game.
Amazing how xenogears nails the dark triad exactly with three characters that perfectly symbolize each of the triad...even though xenogears was published in 1998, 4 years before the concept of dark triad was first named. Looks like xenogears was actually the originator of the whole damn theory
for sure. even earlier if you consider that the story was conceptualized before actual development began. i think takahashi/saga chose different psychological archetypes and attached them to many of the characters and it just so happened to fit that ramsus/miang/grahf aligned with the 'dark triad'. someone could probably do a better analysis of these characters than i can because i have no expertise in the subject matter but 100% these 3 characters align with their respective conditions.
Ramsus was one of the characters from this game that really stuck with me. Like, you see him in the beginning, a proud and arrogant commander of Solaris, but as time goes on and he realizes who Fei is and continually fails to defeat him, that façade cracks more and more until the final battle with him when he’s practically screaming in rage at Fei for all he has “taken” from him.
This is just great I always wanted more back story for Ramses. He was a complex character and had a lot of depth to him.
Awesome character study. Your videos are woefully underrated. This and Xenosaga Trilogy is one of my favorites. Maybe do some Xenosaga stuff?
Thank you for this. You are doing g̶o̶d̶'̶s̶ deus' work.
Extremely well done. I look forward to your future projects this really gave me some perspective 🤔
I absolutely love when you put up videos about my most favorite game in the world!
I have loved this game for 2 decades and I really enjoy you clarifying so much of it and also appreciate the work you really put into the research, knowledge and delivery
"When Elly was at Jugend she was also a candidate for entry into the Elements, being friends with both Dominia and Kelvena."
"[Dominia] has towards Elly hostility, envy, bullying and the like."
"[Kelvena] was a classmate of Elly's at Jugend."
Yeah, those sound like healthy friendships, all right. Elly for her part thought of Kelvena and Dominia as friends, while Kelvena blandly acknowledges the fact that Elly exists, and Dominia actively hates and attacks Elly at every opportunity.
Makes you kind of wonder if Elly flipping out and going all Akira on a squad of Solarian troops in her backstory was solely due to 'Drive' still being an experimental combat drug, or whether her reaction would have been milder if the drug hadn't cracked open the lid to a bottomless well of pent-up anger and frustration against her so-called friends.
Love this, thank you
I remember when I finally met a true malignant narcissist for the first time. My mind could not comprehend why they are so fucked up
I felt as if I was the codependent, and kept coming back for more
This game has been my Moby dick since 99' no matter how many times I play through (once a year in dec) it never fails to amaze me, so much was left untold.
