THANK YOU for posting this. I bought this model as my first go at building a ship and your correct, the instructions are useless. I turned to youtube and found you. So glad I did.
I was starting to think about launching this part finished kit to the bin. Now thanks to this link I am looking forward to finishing it off. THANK YOU!
That’s beautiful work. I’m buildning the similar Halcon 1840 1:100 as my first ship and its very, very helpful to see your model now when Im riggning the sails. As you said, instructions are useless and I’ve had to custom-make some parts as well as estimate all measurements on masts, bowsprite etc. myself (which had its charm). All in all, a very nice model. Thank you for showing your lovely ship!
my husband has expressed interest in building a model ship - his favourite is the Victory but that is a much bigger project! So I thought to buy him this one for his birthday, it looks a lot more achievable. I was worried when I read things saying the instructions are useless but your video and link to better instructions gives me more confidence that this is reasonable as a first time project. Thanks! Edit: I have just realised the one I was looking at is 1:96 scale while yours is 1:130. Maybe I will have to keep looking!
Your hull looks very good. That is my biggest source of trepidation. I am a (old) lifelong modeler, but this is my first wooden ship. Hopefully 40 years of model train and scratchbuilding will help.... A 25 page pdf of instructions? That is awesome! The included instructions are rather useless ha ha. Your cannons looked pretty good. I was thinking of getting the accessory kit for this model - metal cannons and anchor, a pile of cannonballs etc. But the accessory kit is $24, which seems a bit high for a $7 ship. Thanks for the video, and the instructions! 😎
Having a little trouble understanding how to install the planks. Are they layed out in the correct order on the sheet? Any clues would be helpful. I have many years experience building many cars and ships. This is my first wooden build. Thanks!
You start with one's that go fully from front to back from under the sides, sitting naturally on the frames. See 1.45 in the video. You than work up to the sides a plank at a time cutting them to shape as you go. Bend the planks to shape beforehand then glue to the frames and to the edges of the nearest plank. You then do the same working down to the keel. I put spacers by the keel between the frames to help this. You can see them at 1.45. My other ship model videos give more detail. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the excellent video and links. Could you possibly share detail photos of the place where the upper and lower portions of the main mast meet? I'm having trouble visualizing which parts are used to link them. I assume they are joined somewhat like the two sections of the bowsprit are.
Cut two pieces of wood 15mmx15mm and drill two holes in each that have the same diameter as the masts. The holes must line up. Insert the top part of the mast from above and the bottom part of the mast from below and glue. You can see it best a 2:58. Hope this helps.
@@calros3 I'm having trouble ID'ing a couple of the parts shown in these photos: www.flickr.com/photos/jsclark/albums/72157719521336813. Any clues would be greatly appreciated! You can reply here or comment directly on the photo pages.

Hi there firstly thanks for posting ,i just bought one off of e-bay for $20 Australian i am looking forward to building it in a few weeks when i get it ,yours turned out really well ,it makes me feel quite relieved as i was wondering what i would get for $20 bucks ! once again thanks for posting your build cheers Andy
Bit late to this video but I am wondering do you think its possible to fit it into a bottle? I've ordered this boat and wondering if it will be able to fit into a bottle
No guide, just experience with other model ships. I bend the planks first with a soldering iron on the inside. Then I use a quick drying contact glue, hold the planks down with pins and glue the edges as well as the frames. Afterwards sand the hull and use a filler till everything is smooth. Then paint with acrylic paints. My other model ship videos give more details. Hope this helps.
@@calros3 thankyou for the reply. i'm now on the mast part. the kit didn't include any wooden pulleys but i really wanted to have them on mine. the dead eye pulley is just too iconic to pass up. :D
@@francis9506 Yes I had the same issue. Fortunately I had leftovers from previous builds. You can get little packs of pulleys from ebay. Enjoy your build!
It's not a BAD little model ship but without the instructions on line at : www.dropbox.com/s/mhh62p18bkxg9jn/Ship%20model.pdf?dl=0 it would be hard to do. There are parts that do not seem to have a purpose and I can find no finished models that have them. I may use them for the anchor stantions because the anchors shouldn't hook on the side. When you put the anchors together you'll see you'll need to cut and rotate them from how they are formed on the parts tree. I will say it was fun to out the planking on the bottom...my first time doing such. The link I provided above has the sail measurements.
A link to your video was provided by a viewer from "Tally Ho" Channel, so I checked in to say "Hi, what a great model you've made, with an interesting narrative". Greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭
I didn't need to soak the planks at all. They are very flexible in this kit. For greater bends I dip in water then use a soldering iron on the inside of the plank. My other videos show the process. Hope this helps.
Do a search for Harvey 1:130 model. Look through all of the sellers (like Amazon) as some of the retailers show details of the build, with diagrams giving measurements for the spars and sails. It takes a bit of searching but you can soon find a series of photos showing stages in the build, and a decent sail plan.
Great job! I got one of these and am using your video as a guide - yours looks lovely. It's my first ship build, and with the plans in your description it's working out just fine. What technique did you use to secure that tab around the sail edges? Was it sewn or glued? I tried using super glue, but it spots through the sail and doesn't look as good as this!
It is beautiful. I want to build the same but I’m a novice at ship building. Should It or find something else? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
This is a good one to learn the basics of ship modelling. I have updated the introduction to this video with links to decent plans and with the correct sail and mast dimensions so they will make the project much more achievable. Enjoy your build!
Pretty cool. Sorry calros3 but I noticed that the canons are mounted on the carriages backward? I'm going to get one of these kits. They look like fun.
The cannons aren't backwards, just look up what an old fashioned ships cannon looks like. You see on his it has that lump on the back that you see on the back of real ones. You can also see that the end pointing out of the ship is slightly thinner than the end on the inside of the ship.
You can get the dimensions for the masts and spars by looking googling 'Harvey Model ship 1:130'. Some of the sellers have dimensions in their product details, proper sail plans, and photos showing a typical build. To shape the masts and spars from the dowel supplied I used a sanding disc on a slow electric drill. Hold the dowel against the disc and pretty quickly the dowel is tapered to shape. Much quicker than trying to do it by hand with sandpaper. Hope this helps.
Strange . I have the same kit but it is an 1 to 100 scale and it's named Halco Ocean ship. Thanks. Your instructions are 1000% better than what i have:)) But hey? What you can expect for $10 including porto.
They need more explanation of the planking, the wood supplied is not flexible enough to go around the frames, and the positioning of the upper hull is not clear either.

You couldn't make the ship in a bottle but could put the finished model in a bottle if you could find one big enough.
