There are extension cables available for bringing the SIM-card out of the modem. Cellular network coverage is complicated. The coverage is highly dependent of the physical cell size. Sweden has very large cells at the costal areas, which makes a great coverage with a slight cost in speed. For a small LAN that is not a problem. Some 4G and 5G cells use very high frequency, close to or up to microwave levels. In those cases an external antenna with long cables does not help at all. It might even make the situation worse, because of cable and connector losses. We have one Teltonica with external antennas as a backup on our ship. In some areas the signal with it is actually worse, compared with the primary GSM-modem with internal antennas installed inside the wheelhouse. In my opinnion the best sollution is a dedicated outdoor GSM modem. Naturally you will lose the ability of easily changing the SIM-cards, if for example installed on the mast top. I have a Zyxel 5G outdoor modem at our summer house in the Finnish archipelago, connected to 4G+. I get 145Mbps download and 65Mbps upload with it, compared to the cellphones 45Mbps download 5Mbps upload at the same spot.

Great video. So i'm interrested in knowing which router you chose and how far up from the seawater the antenna was. You most likely were on LTE B20 or a low frequency channel(dont know which bands they use in sweden) Also i see that you might have put the antenna too low, getting interference from the mast.🙂 Did you find a solution for the Sim card and power button?

I imagine there will be quite a bit of force up there, and I'm a bit concerned that it might not be strong enough. Since you've been sailing with it for a few years now, has it held up well? Hi, I am really a bit amazed that you have not considered the shielding impact from the mast your present mount is causing. I would say that you are considerably shadowing the signal at an angle of >60 deg in the direction of the mast by having the antenna this way.
It was a consideration, but with the MIMO anntenna configuration I have not noticed any problems at all. After all, if you can think of a better way of doing it, I'm all ears
I would like to point out that there probably nothing between the boat and the cell tower except open sea. So it's not really a real everyday test. No buildings no trees no mountain. The boat is probably the best place 😅😅
@@michaelschiller1334 True, but the mobile phone had no signal at all out there. We have been testing this setup for 2 years now and it's really working great. When we are in places where the cliffs are high, we have been sharing WIFI to our neighbours that couldn't get any signal

Your set up looks great and good that it works so far out to sea. We are installing a RUTX11 and the QuWureless antenna, on our powerboat in the UK, and plan on taking her to Turkey, but we are not getting the speeds you are achieving. Do you have any tips or pointers on how to set it up and try get the speeds you are achieving, thanks for all the great videos you post 😀
Hi Martin, The speed differrence could be caused by alot of differernt things: In Sweden we have extremely good netowrk infrastructure so the internet is pretty good everywhere. The antennae is also at the top of our mast so this could make a difference. Are you testing the speed in a marina, the masts around the marina can degredate the signal also. The cell towers can also be loaded by a lot of subscribers so maybe test it off peak hours and see if you get the same speed on the test. I hope this helps. Definately better wth the omnidirectional, you don't want to have to keep changing the direction of the antennae all of the time especially when on the move, you just want it to work. I hope it works out :)
Thanks, I wanted the WIFI to be from the boat level, it would probably work with the WiFi coming from the top of the mast. I also have a few things in the boat I wanted to connect physically - chart plotter, raspberry pi, cerbo gx and a couple of other things. Didn't want the devices wasting power on WiFi
Indeed, on the Teltonika you can set alot of things in the configuration, one that I can remember is a scheduled reboot at least. Of course you can remove the power from down below and you can probably use the SMS fuctions to do more features also. I hope this helps, Tack
I am about to evelate my Teltonika routers for better reception on some farms and looking at the Qu range, I am sure the SMS Utilities let known cell Numbers to txt various commands including - reboot, restore .. assuming the router is receiving OK -
Good point, never thought about that one to reset the router to factory, haven't needed to do it yet but I am super careful when I change a setting. The only thing left to solve is the sim card change, but hopefully Teltonika will go ESim soon, that would solve this problem

Thanks, I wanted the WIFI to be from the boat level, it would probably work with the WiFi coming from the top of the mast.
