      hm, ppl who consider realism easy arent doing it right. Setting aside that that each painting has a different purpose, so ignoring portraits of bankers, realism it sets another standard for visual storytelling because you dont have anything to fall back on. realism is technically "easy" because it has a right answer and a correct method and an optimal result but as an artform its the most difficult because you cant fall back on "its art". if you dont have a story, all youve done is copy. Your problemem might not be the art style, but the lack of a compelling story in your chosen subjects (since you refrence "just a copy of a photo")

      Genuine classically trained painters and sculptors are entirely aware that there is nothing technically difficult or impressive about copying an image. The problem is that we've spent over 120 years praising people with nothing to offer outside of flimsily professed "emotion." Now exceedingly few are trained in true drawing, painting, and sculpture. Now due to the level of ignorance that has been intentionally hammered into our youth we no longer praise hard work and demonstrable skills. All you have to do now is record a RUclips video making a fool of yourself while lapping up the attention.

    I feel like Realism doesn’t have as big of a place in our society anymore. Before cameras, painting was the only way to capture a moment in time. Now, painting doesn’t have to serve that purpose. I feel that the pipeline from Realism to Impressionism makes a lot of sense when you come to that conclusion. The existence of cameras allow art to take on another role, or rather, pushes people to experiment with not just depicting things and moment as they look, but as they *are.* As they feel. And I personally think that’s a great thing!

    Please make a video about your thoughts on Ai, and canvas painting robots that have been selling paintings for millions this year. They make the robots appear like humans, and they’ve been selling in gallery’s across the world. And as a working artist, I can say Ai HAS ALREADY taken many friends and peers jobs away, especially in the editorial and illustration world. People who were experienced and at the top of their field. I think the concern is that it will make it even more difficult to support yourself with just your art, and impossible to stand out when people are using specific artists names to create their images. I have an artist friend whose website was totally buried under Ai versions of her work. You can’t find her (very popular) work because it’s outnumbered by the Ai work tagged in her style. And worse then that, I’ve noticed clients starting to devalue art “yeah that’s cool, but anyone could make that in a sec and print it” USING YOUR NAME to prompt the AI. These changes are just new, and the internet is expected to be 90% Ai by the end on 2025. I understand your perspective with Ai, but unfortunately it’s already making its mark.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead 2 месяца назад +22

      I also think their take on ai was a bit superficial. The discussion was never about the value of art metaphysically, especially in the realm of “fine art” in galleries. It was always about economic displacement for commercial art. Human made “Gallery work” will always hold value precisely because it is hard to make and is therefore a scarce commodity. The question transcends ai art itself as it puts in question human work in general to a scale and extent never before exerted by a technological revolution.

    I love this painting. My interpretation is that it is death, is horrifying to most, the end. The body goes back to the earth, and we really don't know what happens next. We can either live in fear of that fact or embrace it, and it seems that man has embraced it . Death is the worst and best thing we have. An ending to it all to keep us grateful and an ending keeping us afraid.

    On the topic of realism I remember back in college one of my instructors telling us that our job as artist is not to be a camera because we could never beat or achieve that. The purpose of art is to make something a camera cannot. I also had another instructor with an interesting philosophy about what art is and his theory was that artist must have an intent when creating a piece, work without intent is not Art. I've carried those lessons with me ever since and they've helped to ground me during low periods of creating new work.

    *THIS!* It's really wonderful listening to someone express thoughts and feelings who share the same impressions towards art (hyper realism and consumer commercial art). As an artist, I admire people with technical skills and yet feel disconnected and depressed at the end results. I'm not sure how I got here, whether creating has sped up this notion for me, however, I do find, at least, that the people around me who have little interest in art or don't create at all do not have this comprehension. This isn't to put anyone down, btw, it's a speculation as to whether the act of creating inspires these emotions and needs.
    Funnily, I had a conversation with my partner expressing what I believe AI cannot do and it is as you said except expressed better!

      @@tailsjekel_artyea I’m gonna have to agree with the main comment. I like the attitude that it won’t replace us and we will overcome it. But the actual way typical “ai art” is trained is very questionable. There are literally ongoing legal battles about this. The ai training material is acquired by indiscriminately ripping every image they can find off the internet. And it’s biggest fans are tech bro Elon musk toe suckers and don’t want to pay artists. The same technology is used to generate propaganda and deepfakes which are getting scarily realistic.
      I think the kind of art you make has not been replicated yet, due to the detail and thoughtfulness. But as soon as they can they will replace you too. They don’t give a shit about artists. Ai is against all artists and all artists should be against ai. And by that I mean image generating ai, there is lots of ai that has been around for a long time and is good, it kinda sucks that it gets lumped in with this.
      I think your art is great, I think your perspective on “ai art” is optimistic and (too) forgiving. I don’t hate you or want to cancel you for thinking this way but I hope you realise how bad it’s gotten and stop using ai for whatever it is you are using it for. I get it, I was there when ai art was silly and funny, then when it started getting worse I was there when people tried to turn the tables and use ai to benefit their own art. And I liked that idea for a bit and even tried it but it never worked out. And now it’s going stale and is starting to taste more sour every day. And I realise ai art has never been anywhere near as helpful and inspirational as real photos or art by real artists.

    • @johnytwo
      @johnytwo 2 месяца назад +6

      @@androart1817 Opposing ai is futile, because you cannot stop something people want. At the same time, there will always be people who want real art, and that is what counts. That you will not maybe make so much money? Who cares. People buy what they want, and if they do not want your art, so what. Either you make art for your expression and joy, or you do for money something people want and need. Easy.

    • @androart1817
      @androart1817 2 месяца назад +21

      @johnytwo ok well with that logic opposing rape is futile too. Just because it’s futile doesn’t mean I can’t oppose something and have nuanced discussions on it. Also I’m not butthurt about not selling my art or anything, I am yet to make any money off my art, mostly because I need to get off my ass and work on my portfolio and social media presence. I think the case against “ai art” is pretty clear cut. It is immoral and should be illegal. Or at least it should be illegal for it to be published without any indication that it’s ai and for it to be “trained” with other people’s intellectual property.

Or just browse artists who are not realistic, and get inspiration. I hate that so much but I guess its the process, I loved both paintings! the second one felt more intentional and a lil bit less bold, we see a lot more form to the body below the water, which honestly I kinda love if together with the first one, cause it becomes a story, you are still deep in the waters but now with a lil bit more clarity to your mind and even though still not breathing it felt more blissful and calm.

      I kinda want to add that, I feel that you wanted to do better and more with this painting which is a difficult thing to go against when painting, that prentious feeling of wanting to hug the world is hard to let go of, thats why we see more of his body more shapes when in the first one is more brave and almost shapeless, the paint strokes felt really bold and not caring too much if its going to be good or not. dont know if helps both are absolutely beautiful and kinda tells a story about the place you might be in as an artist right now.

    The art piece itself was really, really good. I was hoping you'd add maybe an orange fish and or halo of some kind to help the colors pop more or use deeper blue around the main figure to help it stand out- because I do agree, it's a bit light. However, you really helped me out. I've always wanted to draw more realistic, because I personally feel anything less for myself looks like a kid made it but your thoughts were actually wonderful to hear. Thanks for the words of wisdom and art!!

    I loved the monologue about realism and representationalism. Personally, when you look at art through its function, which I believe is 'communication' at the most utilitarian lens, it becomes easier to see why realism stops 'feeling' like art. It's because they're not communicating ideas. It doesn't matter how hyper realistic you get, if there's nothing being communicated.
    Watching this new sunken piece unfold was incredible, I love to see it. In regards to the self critique at the end, I think it would be interesting to see you play with parts of the subjects body emerging out of the water, not distorted by the refraction of the light

    I just had to submit an essay on the use of AI in creative industries for an assessment and why has this video not come out earlier 💀💀😭 "AI will, yet again, push artists to adapt in what I believe to be a positive way, because it will force artists to not just create images, but to create something that feels human. AI will not take artists' jobs, at least while there are still people out there who value artists for what they have to say." its just like how photographs made art transform from realistic portraiture to abstract and emotional pieces that are highly valued today for their meaning and not their realism. I understand the concept, if only i could have seen this earlier so that i could've thought to put it in my essay 😭

      I've also made a mini thesis about ai (in conjunction with my area of study, so the following isn't what I wrote, it's my personal opinion but I've studied extensively about it and how it works). I firmly disagree with the position that it's the same as a camera. It's not a medium that exists in a vacuum, it needs our art to exist to a degree far different from the way humans get inspired. Apart from the fact that AI isn't sentient, the training data and loras literally use artist's names to make an output that is basically a copy from the original artist. The moment you choose a different artist's work for ai to use you've lost a part of your personal voice, the same way you would if you copy and pasted little snippets from the og artist's pieces. Even if it's not copyright infringement (although I believe it should be) my argument is more about the piece and what it tries to express. We artists cannot copy 1 to 1 and paint consistently like someone else, our own internal rhythms, likes, dislikes etc will undoubtedly influence the final look. We cannot move our body exactly like someone else, and the same goes for our brushtrokes, our sculpting. I don't mind that it skips the drawing process, 3d exists and I love it and in my mind ai is like 3d for 2d. But only if the output is based on your own work, and you were forced to start from the basics. These people making bank from ai skip every single art fundamental and consider themselves artists. It's ridiculous. And this technology won't push artists forward, it will only enable the kids who used to steal drawings, paint over them and post them on deviant art, who grew up to keep being thieves and hacks. Ai absolutely will take jobs, it already is, and it will give some of the remaining ones to people who aren't even artists and can't keep quality consistent to save their lives.

    Both pieces are phenomenal and I think the difference in color chroma and the shape of the water really serves to the credit of their titles and meanings really well. 'Sinking' is more frantic and less refined in its water, with the saturated oranges and blue giving off the idea of fire v. water. This helps to kinda sell the idea of conflict, where a lot is happening and you're sinking within yourself. 'The highest and lowest place on earth' having a more delicate wave pattern and a gentler color pallet helps convey the image of calm, beautiful, at ease despite the situation, the idea that you are in control, and content with your situation. The 'harsher' highlights at the end with the glistening of the water are truly beautiful and introduce the ruggedness of your mental state to an otherwise completely peaceful situation, which I believe adds a layer of complexity to the piece. The difference between the halos in both painting is something I believe can also be highlighted, as in 'Sinking' the halo serves to frame the face, yet doesn't provide a much larger visual purpose. In 'The highest and lowest place on earth' The halo is a clarifying tool, one that communicates to the viewer that change and growth as happened since 'Sinking' that has caused the subject (you) to see/be seen clearer, even under the ripples. All in all, very beautiful work, this is my first time seeing your channel and work, yet I am blown away at how eloquently you are able to communicate your thoughts and processes!

    Its the intense color variation on sinking that makes it look less dull than your new piece. The bright red and the spots and the saturated blues really makes the piece pop. And there just a whole lot more colors. Your new one is less saturated and has less color variation.

    Your art is amazing. I find it incredible how you are able to find feeling in painting. No, scrap that: how you are able to create feeling in painting. I'm not a great painter but better than some and find myself focussing on the image and the feeling it creates on not on HOW to amplify that feeling. For now, I just want to get better and allow myself to drift away from tight, overworked realism... I have no idea though, how to start becoming authentic. THanks for giving me something to ponder.

    21:05 sometimes it is because of the pigment that is used in the colour. The phythalo turquoise pigment has a red undertone,- it means it would be in way always darker against a pigment with a different undertone, for example a green undertone. You could use warm colour for shadow and a colder colour for highlights. mixing your colours with white and a hint of yellow can brighten up the colour with out breaking the light to a certain degree and of course using pure pigments is sometimes necessary. I hope that helps, don't wanna say to much, you do a great job!

    • @tailsjekel_art
      @tailsjekel_art  2 месяца назад +1

      i use an ultramarine for most of my mixing, that feels like a much more red blue when i compare it to pthalo turquoise. I also used pthalo green to bring some of my blues closer to yellow. I could be wrong but the whole "red shade/green shade" both feel like they sit comfortably on the warmer scale of blues when you compare it to ultramarine.

    • @lux2848
      @lux2848 2 месяца назад

      @@tailsjekel_art true,true.. i personally don't use ultramarine,- For my blue's and green's i use Phthalo Green (Rembrandt) & Mangan-Ceolin ( Mussini), but i dont work in a natural scale..
      (Very, Very Nerdy Colour Theory Note)
      -Natural light (Physical Light/ Sun) is basically Yellow (& Blue is the Atmosphere)
      -Our perception ( Psycological/ Eye) is in Red/ Green (Contrast/ Depth)
      The Blue part in the Uvula of the Eye is important to see in the Night and we don't have this part at all as Human's left, so basically we don't see in Blue (or Yellow) at all. The colours in between are more a psychological phenomena.
      If you break it down in Colour Theory, it means Cold Tones for Light( Green) and Warm Tones for Shadow ( Red).
      If you have a Physical Object (Red/ Green) in a Room (Yellow/ Blue) the Reflection of the Room (Yellow/ Blue =Green) would be present on the Surface of the object (Red)
      I think the Zorn palette is a Great example for this Illusion in Natural Colours.

    This piece absolutely speaks to me in SO many ways. Although the 1st one speaks in a different way, I connect more with the second one. My life has been a cycle of stormy and calm waters with me in the middle of both, so that is why the second one appeals to me the most. It reminds me that the storm will pass and I can once again be able to rest in calmer waters if I just wait for Jesus to either calm the storm , or calm me, his child. I'm glad you are still not quite content with your work because to me I think that will be a catalyst for continuing your growth as you continue to work at refining your gift and artist's voice. Can't wait to see where your gift takes you. Thank you for sharing.
