Lots of dedicated players out there. Very few of them have the talent that Collier has. Of course, that doesn't imply that the more talented will make better music or be more successful. It just means that they have more talent: some people are better at math, some people are better at sports, is it unimaginable that some people are better at music?
A cursory glance at this kid's face juxtaposed to the level of music he's playing should be a dead giveaway that he's got special ability. Not to discredit his hard work, which always needed. That being said, I'll take Cullum's raspy vocals over his any day!
@@fernandoblanc Oh woah... But I agree that many people are simply too laudatory and will go over the top when referring to Jacob - his fan base is more about worshipping than anything else. Apart from them, Jacob's talent is ridiculous, especially his ear...
@@fernandoblanc I'll never even suggest that he's anywhere near MOZART's genius level, please don't get me wrong. I'm only saying that he's *CRAZY good* at music and incredibly gifted, especially the accuracy of his ear - my brothers and I have perfect pitch and none of us can do what he does - instantaneously recognizing chords over other chords, etc. I think it's fair to say that he's above most of the most talented musicians.
Fernando Blanc I understand completely the point you’re trying to make, Mozart was a genius, no one doubts that. But in my opinion Jacob is undoubtedly the genius ‘of our time’ as the original comment suggests. Music is so subjective so instead of deciding how good he is based on how much you like him, let’s instead observe objective measurements and impacts. He has won 4 Grammys, he is widely respected by giants of the music world (Herbie Hancock etc.), he has reinvented sound design in pop music, created a resurgence of modern classical music, modernised and popularised jazz, his command of harmony is unparalleled, his ear is unquestionably one of the best on earth, he’s invented a new genre of harmonic layering in rap music, mastered almost every instrument he touches, taught music to thousands of young people of all ages through a range of mediums, and all whilst he is still in his early 20s. Just because you may prefer Salieri doesn’t mean Jacob isn’t Mozart.
@@henryskillern9328 I don't know anything really about music, but I love it and I love what you put into words here. Jacob is easy to fall on love with, but it's the music that comes from his soul that really touches me.
This is arranging of the absolute highest calibre. Beautiful, challenging and entrancing. Simply wonderful. To learn to play and think like that takes a lifetime of practice and a bucket-load of something that you simply can't learn. Some people just have music oozing out of their being. Jacob's one of them. I saw Jacob Collier do Stevie Wonder's Lately at the Barbican just this last week. Let that sink in for a moment. Jacob on his own, no wizardy, no multitracking, no backing track. Just singing at the piano. One of the musical highlights of my life.
+Margaret Someone Don't know where you heard that lol. He went to the Royal Academy of Music for 4 years studying Jazz Piano. He's incredible don't get me wrong, but what he does involves both talent and work.
I have some friends who know him, I believe he was enrolled in opera productions at a younger age, and did some other choral things, so he's not completely out of the blue haha
This is pure heaven. I thought it was good last night, listening on my ipod, in the garden, glass of wine in hand - but it is just as good on a grey damp day (in the office!) Thank you, Jamie for having Jacob on your show and bringing his talent to notice. Dream team.
I'm so impressed that Jamie Cullum - in my opinion one of the best jazz singer/pianist in the world (at least under 60), and with a nicer and more unique sound on his voice than Jacob, are lending his voice to Jacob, and letting him play the piano! That's huge! Jamie Cullum is a super huge artist (not in size though...), so good at what he's doing, and totally nuts when he performs! He was also young when he started his career, his first record at only 20 years old! And even Jamie plays a lot of instruments. But since he is doing mostly jazz, and have never been a "RUclipsr", (RUclips didn't exist when he started) he haven't had the attention like Jacob and Dirty Loops. Still, he's my king when it comes to jazz in a modern way!
Wow, Jacob Collier and Dirty Loops are my favorite artists of the modern age. I really want to find more incredible musicians like them to learn from their musicality!!! Great stuff!
An extraordinary performance - both guys have SO MUCH to offer the world of music. Jamie Cullum has a fine voice, rich and compelling. Jacob's performance is brilliant, original and 'all of a piece' with some of the great Jazz masters of years gone by. Jacob Collier's career will be spectacular - that's guaranteed!
I know how you feel. Whenever I wander over to this song, the quality kicks me in the head again. It has timeless style and it's just too crisp. This is as fine as two people and a piano can get.
So beautiful! A magical collaboration. (They may have forgotten they ever did this). I have listened to - and watched - this exquisite performance so many times in the last few years. In the first few moments, my eyes fill with tears and I continue weeping with a poignant joy for the rest of the song. And I like the courtesy the two guys show each other. A mutual respect in which we can all participate. What a gem!
I was a big fan of Jamie back then. He opened the door for guys like Jacob to move this UK Jazz movement forward. I look at this awesome moment like Jamie officially passing the torch to Collier. This is a beautiful thing.
Why did this take more than 4 years to show up, two of my favorite artists together, just wow! I love how Jamie looks at Jacob while he is playing and singing.
Love it! I haven´t heard of Jacob Collier until today through a friend on FB. Jamie Cullum is fantastic! And now I discovered one more person! This is MUSIC on a high level!
Wonderful! And because it's a BBC production, the portrait photography of the two artists is superb. This is the only Collier video I have seen which shows the expressive faces of the artists so well. And Jacob's keyboard work is extraordinary.
Jacob, singing in his lower register and his harmonic improv staying in context make fabulous Crazy with Jamie’s fabulous, understated voice. Brilliant duet.
The various intimate settings where Jacob Collier collaborates with other musicians, like this session, his mahogany session, impromptu jams that get recorded, etc. always just re-inspires my love for music.
How am I just now learning about the wonderfully talented Jamie Cullem ! And I simply love the piano accompaniment that reminds me so much of Bill Evans. Beautiful chord progressions and harmonic constructions.❤

I already had my socks blown off by Jacob's vocals and harmonies, but I didn't realise what he could do at the piano, my gosh, that bent me out of shape.
Jacob is channeling the music of generations of jazz greats before him, and will help keep that light burning bright as well as write entirely new chapters in that book. Awesome to have someone bringing such music to a new generation, to say nothing of the beauty that is his own music. Never heard Jamie before but a great voice.
