- Brilliant performance by John Martyn of his echoplex masterpiece, Outside In. This is pure John Martyn all the way, and the way that many will forever remember him and revere him for...generating unbelievable sounds from one acoustic guitar, his echoplex, wah pedal and a fuzzbox. He used to be billed as 'the one man Pink Floyd'...and this shows why. A brilliant composition allowing innovative guitar playing and also his amazing vocals to create an awesome soundscape. I think of this as his 'pot-pourri' echoplex piece, or possibly more like a 'Paella' because it has essential elements that characterise it, but also has some variable inclusions, version to performed version. He opened for Traffic @ The Spectrum in Philly on his first tour in the States. I'd never heard of him and it was obvious most of the crowd hadn't. He opened with this song, the stage was black except for a single spot on Jon. The sound filled the arena like thunder. When he ended the song there was a great silence for a few seconds and then 19,000 people rose to their feet and roared as we clapped in stunned amazement. At the end of his set the yelling for an encore just kept going & he played I'd Rather be the Devil. Another encore was respectively declined in deference to Traffic. A total unknown had the crowd that came to see a super-group willing to wait to see them for the more of the opening act. I'll remember that night till I die. Traffic was so good it made this 1 of the best nights of music ever for me.

As a shoegaze fanatic I can assure you that John Martyn invented it 10 years before it's time. When I used to play the huge 18:00 minute Live at Leeds recording at 2AM when I was DJ'ing at KCSU at Colorado State the phone would ring off the hook with people asking "What was THAT."
Saw him many times over the decades, but what he did with the Echoplex was truly his trademark of he time....a one off!
I used to play the 18+ minute Live at Leeds version when I was a DJ at KCSU and at 1AM the phone would ring off the hook with people asking "What WAS That." Another great performance. Even better. But not available in 1978.
Thank God someone recorded him doing this and thanks for putting it up.
JM's Delay work makes The Edge look like a 12 year old playing his first guitar! haha
Every now and then I need his music.
There is no one like John - no one so underrated.

@Eurydicesong You're welcome, more people should know about John Martyn and his legacy. I was 18 when I first saw him play and had been playing folk-blues guitar for about 7 years then. Everyone else (eg Clapton, Jansch, Grossman) made me 'aspire' to play 'better'...but when I first saw John...I didnt even play for at least 6 months after, and I was totally gobsmacked. He was def' amazing, almost 'magical' in how he sang and played.

Every time I hear this it steals a little bit of my soul. No-one can deny this is music straight from the heart.
I saw this tour in the University of Essex dance hall. All the hippie parents from Colchester and surrounding areas brought their kids and sat on the floor. About 800 people in total, with the students. Still remember it. A religious experience for an atheist.
Nobody could do this by themseves. It's physically and metaphysically impossible, John Martyn: The first shoegazer. And one of the greatest musicians who ever lived. I have two other performances of Outside In including the massive perforrmance at Leeds but this is the best I've ever heard.
In a word, exciting...like trying to capture a tiger by the tail...I also think of "Frippertronics from a parallel universe"...

Incredible Artist and Performance! How could anybody not like this guy, as well as his good friend Nick Drake? Astounds me. This would have been one hell of a great concert to have been in the audience.
I remember seeing him open for Yes back in the 70s. I was blown away by the amount of sound coming from one man and his acoustic guitar.

Beautiful, thank you. I saw him circa 1980 at what was then Leicester Poly (now De Montfort Uni). Went along on the off chance of a good night out never having heard of him and was totally blown away, Gobsmacked. I remember the hall unbelievably being filled with this amazing music, and all from just one guitar. A transcendental experience, and I was not, I swear, in the least bit stoned. Truly moving. Thank you for this post, so very much. It takes me right back to that night all those years ago.

Thank for this, I am a total sucker for delay effects. I've seen him do this live a few times in the earlier part of the 70's, the first time was as part of a six-band package at the Roundhouse with Mott the Hoople headlining and all I knew of him at the time was his track with Beverley on the Bumpers LP, so after a few of his (albeit brilliant) acoustic tunes when the Echoplex got switched on you can imagine how blown away I was. Beautiful stuff

Shows how he defied any kind of nusical label!!! Rocky, bluesy, folky, acid, combined with SO MANY other styles and effects. You were an arranger without comparison and your song writing abilities were quite fantastic, as well.

thankyou for this i have seen him play live loads but this reminds me of him playing at glastonbury one afternoon playing with the speaker stacks and an empty pyramid stage audiance cos he wasnt top of the pops he was and is awesome his music lives on a beautiful man
@AlastairFawn I'll 2nd that. I was that soldier! I saw this a few times live, & -tho' I bore people who arent JMfans- it floored me and anyone else I knew who saw/heard him. The same goes for his other echoplex stuff, but Outside In the most 'impressive' to me. That quote is interesting- thanks. I just recall the '1man pink floyd' bit, back in 74. Aye, JM solo -70s, was an amazing act & what an *atmosphere*! I even remember *hearing* people saying 'this is *the* live act to see' to others.
@QuistTV Too true! He is actually credited with the invention of the 'slap back' technique...starting on pure acoustic..that beats 2 & 4..slapback.with the fingernails of right hand in his case...there wasnt any to my knowledge also before him around 67 he was recording using that. He's actually said (when he was alive) that he got a kick out of seeing people doing that- effectively copying his approach. It was even more awesome when he comined it within echoplexed stuff like here -Ian

@QuistTV PS: This first time you seen JM stuff? I was 18 back in 74- I played a decent blues fingerpicking and some ragtime. I thought I wasnt 'too bad'-flush of youth -hah. I saw JM late 74 one sat' night-he was doing this echoplex stuff- I couldnt even *speak* to anyone for days & stopped playing guitar for 6 to 9 months..just didnt touch it. He had that effect on alot of others, I read, yet -famous as much for his voice and compositions. A great loss 2 yrs ago in my book, unique.

@TheFireAndTheSigh Aye, awesome he was, the old bugger, I saw him many times live in these days of the vid (70s) and he knocked *every* guitar player for six imo! As to the Fuzz he used..in the 70s he used a 'Big Muff' (by Electroharmonix), of which two versions are now made by them I think, (I use a 'Double Big Muff'). It wasn't 'special' to an acoustic tho'- infact he was just about one of a handful who used such e-guitar effects on acoustics (then & now really).

Thanks for this, Ian. As good as the versions on Live in Milan and the outtake on the extended Inside/Out. I like to think this is what he played when supporting Pink Floyd and got a standing ovation after being boo'd at first for being a suspected acoustic guitar folkie.
try again two bottles thick saw john at glastonbury playing with the stacks of speakers and his pedals and mostly guitar was blown away seen him loads of times afterwards and never saw a bad gig even his gig with roy harper at the brum town hall was funny cos they were both so wrecked and still interesting i miss i will never see another live gig or him tell me he had never seen me take my a dog out before he was right the best player i have ever heard live

Where was he in '68? Some guitarist did a school assembly at my Jr. Hi outside St. Louis with electronic pedals and incongruous sounds just as crazy as this.
guitinker What a bloody silly comment 'where was he in '68'? That's like asking where was Beethoven in 1968 (dead) or Ed bloody Sheeran (unborn). IT'S NOT LOGICAL!!! But just for the record, JM issued his first album in 1968. He didn't start experimenting with the Echoplex for another 4-5 years.
John was like a one-man pink floyd when he kicked in the ecoplex.

Apart from Jimmy Hendrix I've never known anyone who meant it more.
John Martyn covered much more musical territory than Hendrix, sang better, wrote better songs and after listening to this was every bit as good as, no better than, Hendrix on guitar. I have virtually everything that was ever published with Hendrix on it. I found John Martyn a year ago and am in the process of doing the same for him. I already have more Martyn than Hendrix in my collection. If I could only keep one, it would be John Martyn.

@bobgreen623 Yes, yhe first time I heard him..also..he was echoplexing away..I too was staggered, stunned (and really I still am 36 yrs later!). There was no equivalent to him..not even the Robert Fripp stuff. It had to do with the way JM played the guitar also..led to this incomparable & unique sound.-cheers, Ian

You can see where that gimp who plays guitar in U2 gets a lot of his ideas, some part of this song have been copied by him note for note. Seen John loads of times over the years, and watching him play this and Big Muff live is great, the first time I saw him set up Big Muff I was blow away as a guitarist myself (a scrap one) I would never have thought that that was the way he did it, great stuff.

@MrDerrycrush I didnt know that was his last concert.. I thought that was in Ireland. Id be interested to know the date of that Perth theatre concert if poss' . As far as music goes, he was no ordinary genius, a legend as you say. Thanks for sharing this.
Hello ianmcgeacy and MrDerrycrush, I can't see where your conversation began, or where you arrived at the Perth part, however, let's see if this helps. John Martyn played at the Bein Inn, Glenfarg, Perthshire in 2007, and then the same year three or so months later at the ' Horsecross ', the Perth Concert Hall. There were around eighty or so of us there at Glenfarg.....the room only held about that ! different class !
@leon327 This is the 'bit' just after the 'fuzz' bit. He still has this on 'echo' delay-same setting as at start, & I think signal still going *thru* the fuzzbox -but the 'fuzz is turned off'. The 'box' still affects the signal from the mag pickup he uses here on this. I try and duplicate on my cover but I dont get the *same* sound as JM for that bit. He's also using the wah pedal.& if he has that part way down (but not wahing) then that also affects the tonalities. Anyone else help? (Kev, Pip?)

Yes, he surprised many who went to see him for dirst time- expecting another McTell or Jansch maybe but getting something quite stunningly different. After that first hearing, they either loved him or hated him, not many in between I dont think!
@241357 Aye, I think I agree, this is *the* John martyn video to have - a decent recording from his classic period still, totally solo as well. But the BBC one comes close with several concerts on it (2 solo and one early band, I think), and the 'extras' on the BBC video (OGWT stuff) make it a very close second. There's also *more* JOhn Martyn at the BBC thats *not* on the BBC DVD- but does exist- some classic OGWT performances. A second BBC JM DVD one day ?
@Iscence1 The version of him doing this (on my playlist) with the band in 1981..is prob the best 'band' version ever. I thought his vocal work on that was absolutely top notch. Im the same as you- I cant decide if I like that band version or the solo version more. I think the solo version has the edge to be honest, overall, certainly for listening to the guitar work...but his vocals were never better than on that BBC band version on this..taken from 'A little Night Music' back in 1981.
@echo680 Cheers! That 'ALNM' I also saw when it aired, but I knew of him well by then. You CAN find songs from that night on utube: HurtInYourHeart and also the one I uploaded called 'Inside Out'. Its 1981 (not 70s) with a band and JMs wearing a brown suit. See my JM playlist. Unsure what else he did there, another 1 or 2 I think. Also some of that to be found on rare VTape 'JM In Vision' by BBC (thats source of my 'Inside Out' from that night). I think all songs from ALNM *are* on utube!-Ian
@mickleesongs The pleasures mine Mick (I got the name okay I hope)...theres def a hardcore of John Martyn disciples , and I would say its actually 'hardened' now since he died. A great loss. I have just got his last album and - its pure soul...pure. Theres alsoa tribute album coming out and Ive pre-heard some tracks on that - some are available on the tube also...its going to be a knockout..with also a DVD including some unreleased material of JOhn himself.....stay in touch squire !
@QuistTV I dont know, Im not up on Roy Buchanans stuff, though Ive seen him play electric in the past, -brilliant guitarist. I also dont know if its 'true' that JM invented this *first*..possible that several may have been doing it quite independently, if they were from different genres of music. I suppose, if Buchanan was known as doing this prior '67 then the theory is disproved that JM was the first. I think John himself was def' under impression he was the first to do this method of playing.

@MrLespaul01 Not yet! I myself sat down and spun the DVD of this to death, using freeze frame and 'zoom' as much as anyone has ever used! I'll lace (with many others) some details on my site 'McGeachyGuitar' at some point, when I can distort spacetime (but a full tab of this?.ouch!). To use vids of this to learn..best to see other versions of him doing this also cos theres some common elements..its an 'amalgam' like a Paella of different pieces and he did diff versions at different times. -Ian
