way ahead of their time! The world was not ready for Mott the Hoople. They were completely groundbreaking and everyone that followed was a me-too band. the inventors of what is now termed glam-rock. I saw Ian Hunter in NH when he was my mothers age - 82, and he rocked the house!
Pick up MTH live released as a 2 cd set "74 set from London and '73 from Broadway. They kicked ass! Mostly different sets. Buffin and Overend Watts were so tight. Buffin plays a double kick so smooth.
@@littlebird2276 they have a documentary ,,someone had to take control of the band to move along,,Ian stepped up ad took control.. Ralphs did nt like the fact,,so he let after awhile to form Bad Company.... SEEN BOTH BANDS LIVE AND BAD CO COULD NOT TOUCH MOTT THE HOOPLE LIVE SHOWS.
@@MrGoodtogo55 in the early days it was definitely Mick driving the band though. And undoubtedly there was tension in that power shift. Still I wish they could have worked it out...agree MTH is far superior to Bad Co. The songs Mick took from MOTT to Bad Co were killer, but I felt overall he was better with MOTT despite the success of Bad Co.
@@littlebird2276 Mick stepped back and they were in a Lull so Ian topped forward..The Songs Mick wrte were killer.. Saw him Live with Mott the Hoople and Bad Company..
Rocking, raw, footage from one of the truly great, under rated, and under appreciated English bands of the 1970's. Thanks for posting-brings back some great memories.
If you were young and saw these guys you would realise the punk from the mid-late 70's had already been done. They made great records later..great writer Hunter.
That is Mick Ralph's of Bad Company on guitar. These guys rocked the hell out of it. Might have been a bit sloppy and out of tune but that's how it was back then. Not a lot of tuning up and tuners in those days. Usually they used one instrument instead of changing after each song. Really enjoyed this live version. I bought the Rock and Roll Queen studio album in the 70's. Still have the vinyl. Maybe I'll spin it tonight. Rock on!!!
Saw them with Ralphs & Bender. It was the 2nd or 3rd show from the end of the Band.Ariel Bender was frikkin' way wikkid on Guitar.Great fill in for departed Ralphs. Also saw Mick Ronson do this at a soundcheck in Detroit.Talked to him, said they might play it Live someday. No recording.Motts version of " Ready for Love." was the shizz!
I loved them since their first album. Turned me on to MC Emscher btw. They were the perfect band at just the right time. Ready for Love by them was way better than the Free version.
@@selewachm Free didn't do "Ready For Love". Mick Ralphs wrote it. Mott The Hoople did it, then Bad Company did. Paul Rogers of Free was Bad Company's vocalist, so that's probably why you were thinking they did the song, but Mick Ralphs didn't write it until 1972 for the "All The Young Dudes" album. Paul Kossoff was Free's guitarist.
Any band on any given night is the greatest band of all time! Mott had many given nights. Sloppy, dissonant, at time acrimonious to each other and the crowd, aggressive, Glorious. Magnificent. Chaos. And then Ian Hunter would sing a ballad that would cut your heart open. Hunter is turning 81 (!) next month. And still writing , still recording. A mighty long way down Rock n Roll for all of us! Ya know.....I still got a little fight in me yet! 😎
Awesome recording of Mott the Hoople. One of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. Saw the band supported by Queen when I was 13 years old. They had a life long impact upon me and I will forever be in their debt for shaping and developing my musical education.
Saw the Mott queen gig in London December 1973 said to my mate the support band are good (queen) but the singer is to over the top for me , what do I know eh , still preferred Mott the hoople though.
In order rock y'gotta know how to and sometimes it all gets shitfaced. Mott was in the class of their own. tHEY SUCKED IT THEY FUCKED IT .... rELENTESE (I MIGHTSAY) Rock and roll will never die, and Mott will always be and anthem when required
I think it's partly the mix, the guitar is too high, and also slightly out of tune. If you'd been there it wouldn't have been so important, they just tore it up on stage.
There's going to be night's like this, sometimes every thing aligns and you have a special night other nights you're battling everything to get through it, this shows it doesn't only happen to me
Ian, Mick, Verden, Overend and Buffin - can't get much better than this.
I saw this tour when they opened for Johnny Winter And.
Mot The Hoople...so very underrated!

Mott the hoople one of the greatest rock bands period.❤😊
Mott totally killing it and inspiring generations to come! God bless ‘em. 👍🎸
This is Fucking Brilliant!!!!!!!!! Never saw this til now!!!!!! Great band, great songs, great time for rock n roll.....Long Live "The Hoople"

100% pure rock. Long live Mott.
I LOVE Ian's hair and the camera movement. The songs great too !
And those tambourines go to 11!
Back in the days I heard this song in Vinyl series...love it
Mick Ralphs hogging the darkness rather than the limelight, as always! The guy has zero ego. :)
but he did, that is why they broke up,, he thought Ian Hunter was taking too much control..
Gary Manfredi zero stage ego though. And I thought the problem was Ian couldn’t sing Mick’s songs. Paul Rodgers sure as hell could!!

great hard live version... one of rock greatest songs of all times...
God save the Rock and Roll Queen!
A GREAT rock and roll band.
Mighty Mick Ralphs came up with this great riff, which I am sure The Stones used the next year as a basis for “Bitch.” Rock on lads!
never realized that. I think you are spot on, and that is one of my favorite riffs ever. Thanks

I think you mean Mick Ralphs of Mott who subsequently joined Bad Company.
Whew...man spot on Mott
That's some good shit - early MTH!
God!! This brings back so many amazing memories of some amazing Mott gigs in 1970 and 1971 when they were at (for me) their peak!
Me too Rob, those couple of years before bowiefication were their absolute best.
Yep, it was like walking with a mountain!

Dirty, sloppy perfection. Ain't nothing better
R.I.P.
Dale "Buffin" Griffin (drums)
The greatest and most underrated drummer of all time
Pete Watts was my inspiration when I first picked up a bass guitar!
There are a few 'Rock n Roll Queen' songs out there and they are all good but this is the original and best!!
Fan. Tas. Tic.
Saw them at Chatham Central Hall. Supported by Queen. Great night.
Overend with the watts!!

Wow I could have written that exact comment in full. Saw that tour April '74 when I was 13.
Saw the Mott queen gig in London December 1973 said to my mate the support band are good (queen) but the singer is to over the top for me , what do I know eh , still preferred Mott the hoople though.
Jonathan Bailey me too!!
I saw that same tour in Bournemouth Winter Gardens. I love Mott but thought Queen were outstanding. I was about 16 then
The good shit ain't nothing like it
this is what I call Rock'nRoll! great video, great band!
- EXCELENTE !!!
An absolute TEN!
I think it is an 11!
Now I REALLY want a Junior!
Oh the tone.
My fave band.
I can get that time out my 1961 Gibson Melody Maker, with a 58 neck.
This is exhilarating. Jeez o man.
MTH sure was a lot more than All The Young Dudes! 3:09
God bless you Buff.
Ralpher's tone!!
Thunderbuck Ram.
The 10 people who voted this down don't like Rock n Roll!
Now this is how you play Rock and Roll! 😎
fucking brilliant!
Love it
When they were good they were great. And vice-versa. We all have our bad nights.
yes!
Mott is Hott1
Saw these twice, pre "dudes". Not the greatest musicians but put on a liveshow that shamed much "bigger" acts of the time.
R I P BUFFIN BROTHER
now this is what I call the good stuff
A real special friend who I am her not a boyfriend considers me as badass as this song
WHAT A GREAT 5 PIECE BAND.YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN
Lovely!
Fucking awesome.
It's Mott the FUCKIN' Hoople, everyone. Happy birthday Ian Hunter!
I LOVE THAT BEN IT PRETTY**
YOU WELCOME BEN**
You are such a sweetheart. I needed a boost today. Thank you beautiful. :-)
OKAY BEN HAVE A LOVELY DAY **
y w sweet ***Ben**
Wow ! !
Now you know why they used to cause riots.

Buffin!
En 1971 ! Too much too soon.
Is that Mick Ralphs or Ariel Bender playing guitar?
Thomas Atanasio Mick Ralphs
Ariel (Luther Grosvenor) didn’t join until late 1973 - early 1974. Ralphs played on “Mott” and Ariel was on “The Hoople”.
Mick Ralphs.Bender was great at the end.But no one tops the Ian Hunter Band with Mick Ronson."Ronno"
Sounds somewhere between the Rolling Sones and Deep Purple.
Spot-on! X
Overend Watts passed away today at the age of 69.
"All my Hero's Are Gone." One of my songs.Sad but true.
loved Him..
What a mess!!!!
When rock and roll gets too tidy it turns into pop
The lead guitarist isn't with it, his playing sounds like he fighting with it or over powering himself sound like a nightmare ....
I think it's partly the mix, the guitar is too high, and also slightly out of tune. If you'd been there it wouldn't have been so important, they just tore it up on stage.

Before Ian Hunter started pretending to play the guitar.
Guitar is so out of tune it made my ears bleed
Still a massive rifff...
Bullshit. Realy bad band doing stuff from the rack.
Gerd Waller you don’t know what you are talking about. I was there, that band were the dogs bollocks
I saw Mott wipe the stage with Queen at the Uris. Mott WAS rock and roll. Buffing, Verden, Overend, you were great!
hey Gard- take your head out of your ass!! THESE GUYS WERE GREAT!!
Hey gerd- you are way off, but I guess we are all entitled to our opinions, even they are dead wrong!!!
