One of the greatest live music experiences I've ever been fortunate enough to witness. Tremendous music, stellar playing. Leaving the theater, I felt like I was levitating. Big Ears is the best festival, hands down. 2024 was my 3rd Big Ears and I can't wait for my 4th in 2025!
Damn, man. Sucks to be in your 20s, broke, and living in another state. When I saw these strings of shows happening, I nearly cried because I knew I wouldn’t be able to go. 😔
Well, I'm in my 60's, but also broke, living in another state (CT). Used to see Zorn at The Knitting Factory back in the days, great stuff! Got into Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, Medeski Martin & Wood, John Scofield, etc, before they got twined into the jamband scene. This fest is happening again in 2023, featuring Painkiller (Zorn/Laswell reunion!!!!). Looks like this "out" /avante garde jazz music portion of the overall bigger, more mainstream fest, occurs simultaneously. Knoxville TN is like 13 hr's / 850 miles. Hotels are prolly jacked up due to fest in town. Hmmmmmm . . .
Note that John is mostly standing with his back to the audience - exactly in character with being the leader of a large jazz-rock band burbling away on extended single-chord jams. All he's lacking is the sharp Seventies outfits, the nonstop crabby scowl, the musical interjections of "....BLAAAT....SQUAWK....", and the vocabulary consisting mostly of "m - - - - - f - - - - - -".
Unfortunately a big noggin in front of you. Surprised JZ didn’t tell you off and kick you out. The times I saw him live he was not really fond of cameras. Hope there is an album release of this. At the mountains of madness is one of my all time favourites.
Eight performances with different groups over 2 days of Big Ears Festival. Zorn didn't play all of the sets, but he was present for all of them and wrote all the music. And he's doing it again next year!
