I think the problem is that people expect free parking everywhere and the signs simply say "you can't park here, you can't park there, and you can only park here if you live here". Oh it's the confusing signs!!!
lifelong resident here, voter, vignetted. Still deeply loathe this bad signage. And I'm still frequently unsure if I've put the car in the right place anywhere but about 3/4 of my block.
Maybe I say this because I don't have a car and also I've learned to read these signs whenever I do drive in Montreal but honestly there's so many things we need to fix in this city. Spending time and money on an issue that will only benefit car drivers is not a priority in my opinion. Just get rid of your car and ride a bike, you'll never get a ticket (except that one week in the spring where the police decides to crack down on a stupid cyclist rule, i.e. the fact your bike is supposed to have reflectors on the pedals even though cleats pedals have no space to put reflectors).
1 week? They have multiple crackdown phases per year. Nothing more infuriating than getting a ticket while minding my own business on my bike. But bad signage is as one poster said, predatory, and constant.
i agree. arguing that the system is a nuisance for tourists who insist on using single user vehicle in a Climate crisis seems to be like an odd subject. I'm from out of town, and I have no problem with this. Also the argument that "they don't read local language", is bad. i don't see the NYC sign translated for those who don't read the local language.
Paige, please do one on non-road signage generally in Montreal and why it's so awful. I'm married to a person born and raised here who gets lost in any place she didn't grow up going to - its atrocious. Let alone me, I've only been here 20 years. Surely getting lost in the mall and metro in your own city, is not a grown up city thing?
Montreal government has outsourced their tickets business. No way they gonna optimize the parking sign situation and ridiculous regulation. It's a win win for the municipal goverment and those business. Only and always citizens and immigrants lose.
Theres a solution, be rich and always have private parking. But seriously, im in Europe right now and having a car in most of Europe isnt a hassle at all compared to MTL. Lack of space or a car being a waste and unnecessary is a complete myth. It only was annoying inswitzerland to drive a car because of the parking prices, but its affordable for the swiss
I see a Paige Saunders video, I click! Another great one. Thanks!
I love seeing Paige’s videos on CBC, quality content and great delivery
Wow CBC we need more videos from this Paige Saunders guy!
"Hi! I'm a man walking towards the camera looking concerned about something." instantly got me
I love nerding out and watching shows about parking signs!
Great video Paige and thanks CBC for the feature. 👍
I’m so happy you finally addressed this!
Edit: Oh wow I didn’t realize this was CBC. Paige Saunders is the best!
Good to see another Paige Saunders video on CBC. Interesting and important topic.
That tree-scooping truck carrying a giant tree in the background at 0:15 is super cool.

Great stuff! A topic I had never considered before, but this video was interesting start to finish
Mo' parking, mo' problems. Personally I'm a fan of bike lane signs. 😎
People who are making an honest attempt to follow the law shouldn’t be getting a ticket because signage is confusing. That’s predatory tbh.
sure is!

Don`t be silly, Paige, tourists don`t pay their parking tickets, they just leave. Great vid as always.
It is all game theory!
In a city where you can only move to a new address on one single day of the year why would you expect street signs to make any sense.
and that's why trains are better
Because of Bill 96
Not from Quebec tear up the ticket....
