"This is like Facebook, you see a killing then you see a new dance"-Truth
Knox That was one of the realest comments said. If it’s not a new dance, it’s a new challenge
Knox FOR REAL
Knox Fax!!
So true it's sad
That shocked me, especially coming from Patrick who I'm used to see only happy and funny - and apparently it's true for you guys, too. I NEVER see such things on my timeline and I don't think I could cope with seeing those on a daily basis - what kind of pages that you follow post shootings, is it pages on gun/police violence or just "facebook friends" who post what is happening in their hood? That must sound like such a naive and snowflake question to you but I'm honestly interested in learning about your reality and your experiences. I've always been open-minded but realized how little I knew and understood about the reality of minorities and especially of blacks in America when 2 weeks ago I first discovered Tupac (being 29, I'm so ashamed now that I havn't learned about him before) and listened to his music and endless hours of his interviews. Long story short, I'm feeling the pain of living in those inescapable, violent systems - or at least I've gotten an idea of it - and it leaves me devastated and wanting to learn more about your reality, in order to think my little bit about how to improve things for the better...and sending so much love to those of you who live in it today.
Gambino took ballet for a long time. He can dance very well. Dancing and being shirtless seems to be his thing.
Yo Uncle & Yo Daddy Yeah anybody who's seen the Sober video knows he can dance.
Everything is his thing
lol
Conscience Observer nice bait virgin
So much to understand
Dude said he's not cool with the recreation of the charleston shooting, I would love to ask why because THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED. As uncomfortable as it may make you, this is our reality. That's one of the many points.
It's meant to be uncomfortable. Seems like a head in the sand type of dude
Then go to his twitter and ask him y
that's a great idea however I don't use twitter. Ask him on my behalf maybe?
Maybe he thinks it's not respectful? Or maybe too soon? Think about the families... I watched my mother take her last breath 8 years ago and to this day I can barely handle any type of media depicting someone's final moments; it's just too hard.
GisylleGlam It is as important to spread awareness about controversial and issues but you also have to understand that especially to the victims relatives or friends, it is very very painful. Some needs more times to accept, some might be never. I’m ok with that but I understand that guy points.
2:27 “I’m so pretty “ Patrick 😭my favorite part
Marilyn Keutcha I searched all through the comments just for someone to notice Patrick
lmao thats my favorite part too lol
Marilyn Keutcha yes i love that part too😂😂
One thing I noticed about the video that I thought was interesting; every time the cool African/Gospel beats started to play, the person(people) playing them got killed..and the more radio-friendly beat would take over.
I wish, as a songwriter (and just being clever in general), I was on his level of talent.
NashaWriter85 i recognized that
Childish Gambino’s body is the definition of Skinny Fat. I respect the confidence 💯
Jimmy Lemus Fat where?
Slim thick ?
It’s a term used by Body Builders, personal trainers to label a body type. You can look it up here on RUclips that have videos with a much better explanation then I do.
lol
Case Humber bro
All of the car models are older... we haven't progressed.
H Boogy I read somewhere that the empty cars represents African Americans not surviving traffic stops because of police brutality.
That's very interesting.
Could just mean he aint part of the superficial facade of rappers who flaunt sports cars
All three hypothesis are possible
Cars look red white and blue 🇺🇸
Do Boy doesn't understand anything..
wtj83tw except food
What else is new
wtj83tw right lol. He seems to missing his moral compass. He's funny though. But this isn't the first time he failed to understand something.
I actually believe that deep down he's smart enough to put it together, but he doesn't want to challenge himself. I may be wrong.
Jay Johnson Sunken place
Patrick " back back back back"lmao
He so fried
He's simply showing how sleep America is, something horrific and tramatizing happens and it's forgotten about in the next 2mins, the government and media cleans it up with the next mind controlling bs,and he's running to not be programmed again. That's my thoughts bout this video. 😊
mor3sweet exactly and next week his video won’t mean anything because people will have moved on and done nothing until the next killings then marching then rinse and repeat
Huey X I agree completely.
there you go idk wtf half of them in this reaction was tryna imply like the guy that said gambimo could've visualized it better like wat
Finally an explanation that actually makes sense to me. I think you nailed it!
Yup, you cleared it up for me in those few sentences, thats it in a nutshell!
“hello i’m kevin” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
So Chawclet exactly lmao
Right 😂😂
So Chawclet I also was dying from that for some reason 😂😂
So Chawclet lmaoo aye i just subscribed to your channel! Can i 1 more sub? Tryna reach 80
I like how he is confident with his body even though he isnt built like The Rock he embraces his body
No one should care. Magazines and T.V. tells you what perfect should look like. If not for that no one would know or care.
30 percent of the country is obese that makes his body better than average
Kofi Essel-Appiah you would be surprised how many men are insecure about their bodies because they don’t look like what is commonly seen in the media there is so much pressure on both men and women to have the perfect body that I guess it’s nice when someone embraces their normal physique
I love his body
trystan avery If a woman with the same shape dances (shirt or no shirt) tho.
Patrick and Alicia Keys share the same headwrap
Garçxns #sheworeitbetter
+Logan Strom lol
"this celly, thats a tool" everyone misses this line somehow tho....
I thought the line was "this'll sell it, that's a tool"
The way he says it though it sounds like he says "This'll sell it, that's a tool" Which would make since it comes after that line about the dancing
What does this celly mean?
Amanda Stapelton celly is another word for phone
If thats the meaning, then thats hella deep.
One thing i find interesting about this video, is that obvious trick would be to just watch the background. But if you only watch him, you know he is already aware of the chaos... and so is Black America. Watch his facial expressions in the beginning and you can see in his alternating tension and relaxing while dancing, he's fighting between waking up and the bliss of shutting out the chaos and just dancing. Also, he is alternating between typical Black American dance and African dance. Seems like the struggle Black Americans deal with in terms of identity. The only break he gets is when he smokes a little something and relaxes... and awakens. At the end he's fully awake and running for his life because America knows he's waking up. Kill the messenger, music is powerful, which is why they had him execute the musician in the beginning. Kill the messenger.
Just my interpretation. Maybe several different perspectives is what he was going for.
Alan Peters Vert clever interprétation.
Vert*
Very*
I like your interpretation.
Patrick is always my favorite.
That video is powerful, and perfectly done. The symbolism and meaning is deep and needs to be heard.
seen ? x)
Depression Talks With Immanuel just subscribed! Can i get 1 more sub? Trying to reach 80
And understood
If he wasn't so repetitive or had a mumble rap vibe it might be heard instead of being taken at face value.
so Doboy sat there and didn't pick up *anything* from the video? lol
Fari exactly
It’s doboy what did u think was gonna happen
When he makes the gun with his fingers, the music stops for 17 seconds and each second represents the 17 lives lost in Florida.
At the end, the Black man is to the left still playing the guitar. He’s dead. Gambino’s still dancing. People are saying SZA is lady liberty. The cars are abandoned like in every post apocalyptic scene it’s the end.
And the cars form a circle, signaling that society continues to go in circles without a trace of true progress.
If Doboy got hit with a brick that said "Reality" on it. He wouldn't get it..
The point of the video, in my opinion, was to make you uncomfortable because you weren't expecting to see some shit like that but we see it in our social media news feed everyday. Plus the contrast was jarring.
I knew when I saw "This is America" and saw gambino say "I'm so pretty" that Pat would copy it somehow
Nicholas Mells I smirked when Patrick stopped a whole thought just to copy it
Is Kev really a fan of of those clubs or does he just like the jerseys
ParadoxPixels Oh I wasn’t aware of that. S’cute
The Peoples Elbow he wears them because those are the only shirts that hide his tits.
Lol and does he really need to wear shades indoors? Can't stand when people do that lol
I’ve always wondered that
Yea He be wearing à barça shirt then a Milan one then a Real madrid.. Like stick to one of them you can't be a fan of all of them..
How does Do boy not get it
KassyyReefer Because there was no food involved.
KassyyReefer lol its do boy 😂😂😂
Because he’s flat out stupid
Jalen Young ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
eddieruffin54 you right lol
How do y'all feel about Childish Gambino's visual for "This is America"?
For more videos like this follow us on Instagram instagram.com/AllDefDigital and twitter twitter.com/AllDefDigital
How's he finna put SZA in the video just to sit there?
Logan Strom maybe she’ll be in the album
small.sprout But she ain't get a close-up or nothing. She's one of the 5 most beautiful women on the planet; you got to give her something to do.
Logan Strom maybe she’s just a fan of his and was like “ay throw me in there just to fuck with people”
i agree though, she is really something else.
To distract you
fluid creativity It worked.
2:23 Look the dude just fell off in the back.
I know, I am so pretty
I rewound that part like 5 times, his laugh and child-like genuine happiness just gets me! hahaa!
Sanman Sabane 😂😂😂
DoBoy is the most dense person on ADD sometimes 🙄
I love Kev, he's so eloquent and I think he's truly educated
No surprise that dough boy once again doesn’t get a video that at least in my opinion the message is very clear accept the little small things I missed like the kids following him around etc.
malie exactlyyyyyyy
The Spook Who Sat By The Door nigga I’m 17
The Spook Who Sat By The Door maybe your pseudointellectual punk ass can explain then on why him and SZA are spit up and running away from White elites in society at the very end? Black people unite in stupidity, popularity and ignorance not on the shit that matters - endangering us 24/7
You are disappointed because you think that he could have come up with better imagery than that? What lol? The video was genius. Part of the appeal was the simplicity because it allowed for the contrast between the foreground and the background. The violence and chaos in the background that only leaked into the foreground twice while the dancing and distraction was consistently displayed. The basic imagery was an important part of the video. Displaying a complex issue in a straightforward way without having to compromise any of the deeper meanings is part of what makes this video so incredible. That's just my opinion though. I was confused as to why you thought that.
2:03 "Ohh"
😂
"You are looking for snacks background!" 😁
Pat sounded so much like Tony Baker when he was talking about the black African professors lol
Kevin looks like a cool dad💀
UsualMexican98 _21 *is a cool dad*
KevOnStage yoooooooo thats crazy💀💀💀💀tnx bruh
For the dude who said it was too much me, I don’t get it......WAKE UP, you are asleep........aka the walking dead
ruby scott CARL
don't be sorry be careful *CORAL
You one of them black professors
ruby scott Apparently simple grammar is too much for you too.
don't be sorry be careful thanks for the name
"He always got his shirt off, though. With a regular body." lmao
Of course pat like the part im so pretty 😂😂
I had to pause for a minute when I realized that I had confused the Charleston church shooting by Dylann Roof with the even deadlier Texas one that happened just last year... This work of art is unquestionably a wake-up call... This IS America!
😂😂he said he looking for snacks in the background why they always roasting him 😂😂
What KevOnStage said at around 1:03 really clicked with me. I never noticed the gun being handled with extreme care and the bodies are just lugged around.
No matter how ppl viewed this video, Donald Glover made you guys notice what's going on in "America". His song "Redbone" was a wake up call too..
To the guy not comfortable with the Charleston shooting, GOOD! That's the point!
And to the guy wondering how many of the symbols were actually intended, listen man, while shooting a video or a movie you do need to make a lot of choices as for direction, especially for a music video where you have very little time and only very short shots to get your message across.
Even in the most dumbest music video you put everything in there for a reason (nowadays mostly for flexing) or leave out things for a reason (nowadays mostly cause you don't want to spend the money, it's a cost/profit calculation at the end of the day).
So no, you do not book a white horse and its rider for a 3 sec background shot for no reason. That's at least a grand more in video production cost, if that's even enough. And you can't really claim that horse was there to flex.
You do not bother to have the guns be received in a cloth if someone could just grab them like that. Why would you?
You do not leave an exact 17 sec of silence just for the fun of it.
There is a lot of very clear intentional symbolism in this video and you'd really have to be in denial to brush it off.
And for some analysis that people might add on top of it, that is exactly what art is about goddammit! Did you ever go to an actual art gallery?
An art piece speaks in a lot of different ways to many different people, later you might read about the most likely intention of the artist in a catalogue but that doesn't nullify the impression it made on you personally.
Again, this is exactly what art is about. Art that isn't a dialogue is no art at all.
THANK YOU
Congrats to my African sista SHERRIE SILVER for choreographing these moves and killing it in the vid ❤️❤️
This is America!
*shoulder moves*
I agree that I think people are digging deep and finding more meaning in the video than it was. However I will acknowledge that the video definitely had symbolism and Donald Glover definitely called to remembrance and action of things that have affected America in the black community as of late.
RosySpeaks they're not digging too deep. Donald Glover really has meanings in this. So too with his show Atlanta.
It tackles multiple things at once.
The words and the visuals match well in this video.
Now...he may not be telling a story with every sight...but every sight DOES have it's own story and this is why he decided to show it.
He showed me that there are other celebrities who are fore front famous and not like David banner...who can clearly see we haven't really moved forward any since the assassination of MLK and Malcolm X.
We got just as much as THEY allowed us to. And it had to happen a little with technology the way it is. However...we are not as respected as we should be. Which was the whole reason for the fight.
MLK and Malcolm X fought for equality. One with words the other with demand of respect.
Speak to them and show them you can respect them too. And work together....mlk
And if they continue on their b.s. make sure they understand you are not a pushover. You demand respect. For every one of us, there will be one of them. And not so random either. Malcolm X
But they stopped the ,movement. Correction...they assassinated the leaders. Struck fear into the followers. Allowed some things to happen to have fun, while at the same time this same people are living in chaos.
We all dance for different reasons.
We dance so you don't see the chaos we live in
We dance so WE don't focus on the chaos we live in
We dance to keep others from seeing the chaos they were born in
We dance because we feel it's all we can do because we can never escape the chaos.
For us...this is America
people will always interpret art different. shoot, look at the mona lisa for example. people adore that picture while i just see just another average white woman. let them rock
The Spook Who Sat By The Door you're right. I'm obviously not saying shit to you. Stay up
RosySpeaks that's not finding more meaning you fucktard that's critical thinking, good God, LMAO "This is America" for sure, never change RUclips just be mindlessly insipid and mentally limited with no intellectual curiosity.
Real Art is not forceful with its meaning, its suggestive... It doesn't seek to contain you within the artists mind but to use that as a stepping stone to unlocking your own free thought you would otherwise not be in tune with. Real art is a key to your own imagination, understanding and value. Many people are unable to think deeply, creatively or tap into the elements that make them sentient on their own that is why true art and artists should be valued. A great artist understands this and creates for this purpose so whether they meant it or not is irrelevant. What is more relevant is - Does it mean anything to it's Audience?
Strange how he wanted Gambino to come up with a different imagery for the Charleston shootings. I think he was so straightforward with it because it's supposed to be poignant for the shock value. My initial thought was 'who would do that?' then I realised, somebody already did. And they walked away alive, punished but alive. Anyway, I love this music video. It was necessary.
Lmafo I was waiting on y’alls reaction
I love the "This is America" video because it's something I could watch again and again, think about, talk about, learn about ...
I knew this was coming since I seen the video
THE IMAGERY being "straightforward and blunt" is THE ISSUE! The killing of Black people is SO about SYMBOLISM. From the opening song "WE JUST WANNA PARTY, PARTY JUST FOR YOU" to running away from THE SUNKEN PLACE, he has spoken to EVERYTHING IN CULTURE and it's uncomfortable BECAUSE WE PARTICIPATE IN ALL OF IT, even as we scroll pass madness to act like we don't see it because we don't know what to do. BRILLIANT! Loved all of this perspective. #Commentary #Reaction #YAY
Poor Doboy and my eyes for witnessing Kevin with those shades.
I had to pause the video at 2:28 omg when Patrick did the “Im so pretty” party I’m screaminggggg
This video was amazing and poignant, and it touched me deeply. I am not black. I am not white. But I've watched this maybe 30 times. I think the song, but without watching the video it may be useless. But once you see the video, it will play in your mind every time you hear the song.
“ it’s like when you scroll down Facebook, you see a killing then you see a new dance” 😂 SOO true that’s just like all of the internet
Yall pray for DoBoy...
Everyone thinks that him shooting ten people was a reference to the church shooting. But if u pay attention, you’ll realize that they are wearing a graduation clothes. And remember, only 9 people died in the shooting not 10. He is trying to tell us that those African American students with true future is dying because of the gangs or other stuff
Doe Boy, maaaaaaaaaaaaan *sigh* New Nickname alert; Dat Boy Basic, Doe. I swear he can only digest simple sh*t. And it's weird cuz I root for homie. But when subject matter gets complex, his commentary gets simplified. I feel like he better than the stuff he says sometimes, but I only got what I see to go off of. . .
“You’re looking for snacks in the background”- Kevin😂😂😂😂
please remove 4:30 - 4:45 it’s painful to hear such disrespect. thank you.
FISH. Highly disrespectful
VERY DISRESPECTFUL
Yeah. They trippin
I completely disagree with what the dude was saying. I think this video was presented in the perfect way without over complicating it. Yeah Donald Glover could have presented the message in some convoluted, "MAYBE this means this" type of manner, but how many people would have gotten the message as clearly if that were the case? I think the video in itself explains, although not directly, why the presentation is so key. In this day and age the majority has a short attention span and most people wouldn't have tried to dig through the surface to find the deeper hidden meaning of some complicated video. They would have watched one time through then kept on scrolling without having gotten anything out of it. When the visuals give the message plain as day like "This is America" does everyone leaves with something and then can go back with that message in mind and see and analyze what all the little details mean to them.
jflow0703 facts! I feel like childish gambino took what he/we see and hear on the day to day and reintroduced it in a blunt and forceful way. He makes you take a step back and say “oh f**k this is crazy” except it’s really not because...this is america
Coming from north side of Milwaukee the ending is really powerful to me with him dancing on those old run down cars. All the factories that closed here and left entire communities with nothing but aging homes and rusting cars. Everyone is out hustling but we’re all driving broken down ass cars and living in squalor.
No need to react if you saw the video already
King Dominic Yeah they should name it, "interpreting the This is America video."
str8todamoney Right. I wanted to see their actual reactions
"im not cool re-creating the Charleston shootings" uhhhh yeah that's the point.
TBH they don’t even listen to the words. bruh they paying attention to the dances 🤦🏽♂️
Trigger I know that's why I didn't even want to watch this reaction but I like this channel so I just watched it anyways I knew I wasn't going to like the reaction but it takes a few watches to actually understand
Itsyahfav Bria fax bro
We watched this in class for our rights and freedoms topic and my teacher got everything and i loved it
you not cool with recreating it but it actually happened
It's a whole riot going on in the background and we all the focused on the singing and dancing we pay more attention to entertainment than to real issues that need focus. This sound and dancing weren't even deep by themselves but paired with the video back ground it's on a new level. I didn't even focus on the chaos unless he was the one doing it. And I found myself trying to focus on him way to hard trying see the consequences of his action. This reminds me of what Dave Chappelle said about Ja Rule giving comments on a natural disaster. how people focused on the celebrity more than the unfolding chaos.
If he marries a white girl and disappears he will end up like New Kanye.
H A His girlfriend is actually white. There's a photo posted online. That doesn't/shouldn't take away from his blackness and consciousness.
"Yeah I like that foot work! Yeah he killing it-"
*shooting*
"Oh." 😂
Stay Woke.
Patrick at 2:27 😂😂😂 "I'm so pretty" 😂🤦
It's funny all they talk about is the dancing, that's not the point ADD
Jamie Jackson 👏👏
"It does make me want to grow my hair out, tho" -Doughboy HAHAHAHA! I'm for real growin' my hair out!
This video is satanic!!!!
i just wanted to see who took this comment seriously....
Aren't they all?
Greg Evans not really i actually do believe there are a lot of satanic subliminal messages and a lot of satanic symbols and rituals...
So do I... I was being serious. Ive been down that road of truth. Which number are you at so far?
1., First you learn the media corporations and governments and bank are all satanic and connected with each other doing blood sacrifices, sex-magic rituals and casting spells on the masses.
2. You see the satanic symbols everywhere in corporations logos and don't trust anything having to do with those symbols.
3. You realize that the symbols are just apart of sacred geometry and natural formations in life and its not the symbol itself that's bad but how its being used is bad. Aslo realizing polarity applies to everything and if there is bad magic then there has to be good magic.
4. Then you learn that a lot of satanic symbols and rituals was actually taken from ancient African kundalini sex-magic, voodoo and other practices that were twisted and perverted to please evil.
5. Then you realize magic itself is just a manipulation of energy through synchronized elements for a desired effect and its possible because life is just a reoccurring dream we wake up in. The pain we feel in our dreams is just as real as pain we feel when awake because its all in our minds. Everything on the outside exist on the inside as infinity loops infinitely through itself.
I'm still being serious...
Armando Reyes I took it seriously the people reaction is fucking satanic I swear their fucking sheeps
TheActivistBook satan is very real!.
"Death might wear blue jeans" might be my new favorite phrase.
The song by it self is a compilation of everything that we now value in society. Nothing about what are we neglecting to see because we are distracted by what society is selling.
He smokes the joint and the chaos stops. Like he gets peace of mind. But it’s immediately followed by paranoia and the feeling that everyone is out to get you.
I died when he said “He always got his shirt off tho with a regular body”😭
The ending scene has been compared to the scene from Get Out where Chris is stuck in that dark imprisonment from being hypnotized, possibly showing Gambino is trying to escape this.
"Death might wear jeans." LOL!
I think the end where he dances on the cars shows "ignorance is bliss" and then him being chased is a wake up call, that ignorance actually is not bliss.
What got me the most in this video that people aren’t talking about is that the same guy who was shot dead in the beginning is seen playing the guitar in the end of the video. At the same time, the background lyrics says “black man get yo money” or something with all the fancy cars and women around.
The song is essentially about coping and selling our coping for mass consumption...
This can be seen in the opening bridge
"We just wanna party
Party just for you
We just want the money
Money just for you, ah (yeah)
I know you wanna party
Party just for me"
Just before he lights up his joint and climbs onto the car, he says "America, I just checked my following list, and-
-you mothafuckas owe me"
and the outro completely establishes it.
"You just a barcode, ayy
You just a black man in this world
Drivin' expensive foreigns, ayy
You just a big dawg, yeah
I kenneled him in the backyard
No probably ain't life to a dog
For a big dog"
The video to me contrast the gradient between the the suffering and the coping.
2:04 "Oh" had me dying 😂😂
Guy at 2:20 cracking me up, he's loving them moves haha ... invested lol
Everytime we are out here singing and dancing, looking out for self, getting that money, A SHOOTING OR SOMETHING BAD HAS TO HAPPEN to remind us THIS IS AMERICA.
"You're looking for snacks in the background" 😂😂😂
One of the most powerful music videos perhaps ever, in my view.
*doboy at a protest where a clear message is obviously being displayed*
him: i don’t...what is this? what are you trying to say? please elaborate? what’s your message?
That "oh" at 2:00 their faces cahnged completely
Kevin looks like he only plays games to beat the final boss 😂😂😂 .
1:58 "i like that little foot work -yeah... -Oh -oh"
2:04 "oh I love how he just jiggin this is so simplis-" *shoots choir* "oh"
I especially appreciate how he dances to the Music of the Assasinated Black Musician while he dances Like Michael Jackson .
This is my first time seeing the video in its entirety and I couldn't help but to be overwhelmed with emotion
+All Def Digital in case you didn't notice, the cars at the end, are Oldsmobiles, the same as Philando Castille's car.
1:16.."I didn't know he had these moves." 😄 *My initial thought.
He lit the blunt and the world calmed down.
Everyone ignores the actual shootings but runs away when he makes his hands into the shape of a gun at the end. This is a reference to the fact that in America today, few things are treated as scarier than an unarmed black man.
