    Peter Capaldi is himself a huge fan of Doctor Who and has been since he was a young boy. Being a fan himself, he understands how much we love the show. When he got the call to tell him he was the next Doctor, he was filming The Musketeers TV show. A young boy hired as an extra came up to him to tell him how much he loved him in the Pompeii episode during David Tennant's run. Capaldi asked the boy how much he liked Doctor Who and of course the boy was a huge fan of the show. As the BBC hadn't announced that he was taking over, he told the boy to get a camera. "You'll want a picture with me." What a gent. You can imagine that boy's face when he found out!

    I loved how much Capaldi's Doctor developed (at least compared to some of the other Doctors) sometimes in noticeably drastic ways and sometimes in very subtle ways. My personal favorite development he had was his views on hugs. When he 1st starts out he says he's not a hugger to Clara and we see that again in this episode, but by the end of his Era he was definitely a hugger and valued being close to his Companions.

      Of course there are a few very good episodes during Capaldi's era, but rewatching the whole thing with Blind Wave, I surprised myself in remembering all or most of Smith's and Tennant's episode, and most of Capaldi's one seem new to me (like I almost watch them for the first time).

      Some people trash Peter Capaldi because his average era wasn't consistent, but they forget, his peak era(top 5 episode average) is one of the highest in doctor who and Peter Capaldi is usually ranked in the top 3 doctors with David Tennant and Tom Baker. This just goes to show it's not the whole era on average that matters but their peak performance which correlates to doctor ranks.

    'Listen' is hands down my absolute favourite episode of NuWho.
    It hasn't lost any of it's power since it originally aired, and I've rewatched it at least a hundred times... maybe more. It's perfection!
    I wouldn't even know where to start with everything I love about it. The concept of a silent companion, the connection with the War Doctor in 'Day Of The Doctor', all the little cracks the Doctor makes about Clara's looks, the awkward AF date that Danny Pink and Clara go on, the fact that the Doctor and Clara are somewhat responsible for who Danny becomes, Orson Pink in the future and that Clara is the reason for the Doctor's fear and his lack of weapons (namely, his hatred of guns) and just the visuals, which are all stunning.

    And one day, you'll come back to this barn and on that day you're going to be very afraid indeed. But that's ok because if you're very wise and very strong, fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind.
    It doesn't matter if there's nothing under the bed or in the dark, so long as you know it's ok to be afraid of it. You're always going to be afraid, even if you learn to hide it. Fear is like a companion, a constant companion, always there. But that's ok, because fear can bring us together.

    In classic _Doctor Who,_ romantic involvement with the companions was a complete non-issue. It wasn't ever brought up. It was a part of the update that some fans didn't really like. As someone who grew up with classic _Who,_ I saw it as a refreshing change at first, but which got a bit out of hand IMO. I missed the Doctor being _so alien_ that such a thing wasn't a consideration.
    To be clear, in classic Who romance/attraction wasn't just one-sided. It wasn't only a complete non-issue from the Doctor's point of view ─ no one else was ever written with an interest in the Doctor either.
    I feel Capaldi's take on the Doctor is a wonderful blend of the modern and the classic.

    • @donaldwatson7698
      @donaldwatson7698 5 лет назад +2

      It's one of the wibbly wobbly things. If you think about it, 10 and 11 accompanied War Doctor into a Gallifreyan picture, apparently at the moment of its creation: a slice of time from the second city's destruction, an event they should be able to access for the same reasons. I guess, despite that it was a time war, Gallifrey can be accessed in the past, just not in the Doctor's present (which I've heard would be a consistent "present" for all Time Lords).

    And this was the episode some people didn't understand when it came out because they don't understand fear (they also didn't understand what Clara did). They expected material fear and what Moffat gave us was absolutely genius. He wanted to make a story with little help from special effects, just good old psychological writing. No cheap tricks, no monsters. Just fear around what we don't see. Like Stephen King once said: "Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations. They're antithetical to the poetry of fear.” Doctor Who has deep implications on the nature of fear of the unknown and cosmic horror and we don't explore that all that much imo. But this was a breath of Lovecraftian fresh air. One of the best stories I've ever seen for sure. The nods to the 50th were brilliant as well.

  • @taimurmuggo1634
    @taimurmuggo1634 5 лет назад +6

    This is a really good episode and one of Capaldi’s best imo .
    The atmosphere and the exploration of fear is well done .
    The Doctor’s and Clara’s chemistry as as strong as ever , some people don’t like that Clara has a big impact on The Doctor’s life like this but to me it just deepens their bond ( and doesn’t invalidate the other companions imo ).
    Also Danny’s an alright character , not great but not as bad as some say .

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 5 лет назад +3

      Agreed, sometimes his cadence and intonation especially are pure 4th Doctor. 12 actually feels like a genuine mix of many previous incarnations though (later on he has a bit of 10's swashbuckling style for instance, he can be manipulative like 7, caustic like 6 and so on), Capaldi does a brilliant job of portraying a person who's been 12 previous people but is still a unique individual.
