Hi Michael! Im writing to you from Punta Arenas, Magallanes. For a few years I have been building lyres and I follow your videos to solve doubts, you are great! Now I would like to ask you what strings you use for this instrument and if Nothofagus wood (Lenga, Coigüe are wood from Tierra del Fuego) really serves me to build these types of instruments or bowed lyres. I await your response master. Greetings from the icy lands of the south!
Hi, Great to hear from you , Lenga(Nothofagus pumilio) is a great timber choice. Good Birch/Maple equivalent. The strings used on this instrument are 2 plain strings found on acoustic guitar. The bass string is a flatwound chrome wound jazz guitar string. Thickness depends what tuning you want
@@michaeljking I was thinking to start with the melody a- f# -b, the melody you show from the Langspil on your page, then do some research on other tunings. Thanks a lot master
I do occasionally build Mountain Dulcimers too (see my oak model on my channel), They are definitely distantly related! The example here is based on an Icelandic example but with modern chromatic fingerboard and cello pegs. I also make traditional Bentside langspils.
Boy, what a beauty, and such rich sound....YUM. Love the fine tuners too- they sure do help a lot on wood-peg instruments.
So simple but incredible variety of sound, very nice.
Nice :-) Do you make the Langspil?
I make this type and the bentside version of Langspils, see my other videos.

Okay, I know what I'm building next...
What a sound, fantastic.
Very nice both looking and sounding!
Thanks! BTW Did you catch my epinette video I uploaded last week too?
