Decoys being used on grouse moors in Peak District National Park

  • Between 2017-2018, RSPB Investigations covertly filmed suspicious activity on a driven grouse moor near Sheffield. Men were seen placing plastic birds of prey out in the open, then waiting nearby with guns.
    The northern Peak District has a history of raptor persecution - the illegal killing of birds of prey. We believe the intention here was to attract birds of prey, which would mob the decoy, drawing them closer so they could be shot. We also know of other estates using this practice.

    What an amazing coincidence that all the decoys were sighted in perfect alignment with the hidden cameras.

      The guy used an existing hole to place the pole. My guess is this is a spot regularly used by the shooter so the RSPB knew where to place their hidden camera.

    You guys have got a real problem over there. I'm glad that there's not so much raptor shooting over here in the US as there used to be. I hope you guys catch those selfish bastards.

      @jonnyforeman 5 лет назад +1

      There isn't a problem here, this is used to decoy in crows to shoot. The RSPB are twisting facts to gain support/donations, it's nothing but lies. The RSPB control corvid numbers too so this could be construed as duplicitous at best libelous at worst.

      yep we have small minded people killing birds of prey just so they can kill hundreds of grouse and for what so they get thrown in the bin

    Are you sure you haven't filmed some people decoying crows? Raptor decoys are very effective crow lures.

      That would appear to be exactly what has been recorded here - a legal corvid control measure. Another way to control corvids is to use Larsen traps - a method already employed generously by the RSPB.

      @TheNatureLover Search RSPB pest control, or jasonendfield who published an article on it. I dont disagree with pest control if carried out correctly and for balanced reasons having seen the benefits it can produce ( having been involved with 2 projects on reserves one of them run by a university) People need to start working together, yes there are some bad people carrying out unlawfull activity, but there are far more working towards a better future for wildlife and fauna in this country, often in a very quiet unrecognised way. We need to start including all views into the enviroment.

    More shocking and disgraceful behaviour, which we have come to expect. But well documented and entirely consistent with the observed outcomes in status. Despite this wealth of data remarkably no change from the traditional defenders, the GWCT - their published response simply attempts to undermine the credibility of the scientific monitoring of the impacts of persecution, referring to "tags have inexplicably failed", i.e. implying that these are predominantly technical failures, nothing to do with illegal persecution! NB - I would post this comment on their blog but from experience they filter out any criticism. * www.gwct.org.uk/blogs/news/2019/march/gwct-response-to-new-hen-harrier-paper/
