  • This episode of School Bus Talk discusses what happens when a school bus driver's regular assigned is out of service and he/she is assigned the older "backup bus" as a substitute ride. In this case, the backup bus is OLD No. 5, which is a 27 year old Bluebird Type 1 transit bus with over 280k miles. The video includes the adventure and nostalgia of OLD No. 5. The backup bus has good old fashion diesel power without all the modern sensors or maintenance codes. The kids like riding in it, because it does not have seat belts. The steering is a little loss, the brakes are kind of mushy, and it drives like an old pick up truck.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciated you. Old No. Five is a 1987 BB. I speculate that it may be permanently taken out of service in the next 12 months. That’s why when I was assigned to drive it as a sub bus I took the opportunity to make this video.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate you. 1990 BB’s were good machines. If properly maintained, they can roll for decades.
