Cabinet Making: A Day in the Workshop

  • Spend a day with me in the workshop while I build a new wall cabinet. However, not everything goes to plan and I have to correct a huge avoidable mistake along the way.
    This is the first video on the channel for a good few months for all sorts of reasons. I had originally intended this to be a cabinet making 'how-to' style video however having documented much of the process and then turned the camera off to just get the job done, this video is a much more conversational.
    I discuss my love of the Stanley Power Lock tape measure (linked below) and how my new Festool MFT/3 has really improved how I'm able to work in a small workshop space.
    Oh, and did you know that smaller Euro Containers or Crates are the same foot print as a Makita Makpac or Festool Systainer (original or T-Loc) and is the basis for the storage solution for my workshop.
    Enjoy.
    Due to an expected absence from RUclips I suspended my patreon account. If you're looking to support the channel please simply suscribe and click the bell icon to be notified of new videos and future announcements regarding subscriptions and patreon donations.

      Thanks for the comment. No, nothing serious. My day job was in retail banking risk until recently and everything was so busy due to the pandemic and banking and finance being an essential industry. Quite a positive experience for me personally but not time to enjoy the workshop let alone get the camera out.

      Thanks Andrew. For me it's the fact they have the same footprint as a systainer or makpac which means I can make a cabinet or shelf and it works for both.

    Welcome back Carl. Yes, I did enjoy it. In fact I’ve enjoy all your vids. Your relaxed, natural presentation is a joy. Thanks for the introduction of LED panel lights. Those aren’t available on eBay today but I’ll buy something similar to boost my existing strip light. I’m very interested in an MFT and through you went to Peter Millard’s vid. He’s arranged for a CNC machined worktop for about £60 depending upon size. I’m hoping an MFT top will save me from having to buy a dangerous table saw to obtain accurate repeat cuts. So thanks for that too.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Yes - I had a break from work for 5 weeks in September and finally managed to get a new bench built for the CNC and new storage for the Sjoberg bench. Annoyingly I'm stuck with a drill press and belt/disc sander combo that are in the way until I find a better solution. This project was all about clearing small items from spaces under benches and sorting them in to boxes and making them easy to access. Anyway one reason why I stayed away from making videos is that I needed to figure all that out and get it done. Now I feel much more energised and have the patiences to put up with the last few annoyances in the space which I fixing now.

    Welcome back Karl would love a review of the KT3 I keep thinking about it

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Thank-you - I'm sure you meant the MFT/3 and yes I plan to do that. I've filmed the basic overview and review already. I've been waiting for a few parts to come so I can show some basic modifications to the supplied gear which improve things further. One thing I'm happy to say right now is that spending money fixing faults with the supplied gear doesn't do much to make lessen the initial outlay. But its predecessor the MFT 1080 (with flip up rail) is widely regarded as a better stock MFT as you get almost 710mm cutting capacity. The protractor in the MFT3 takes too much room. Anyway more later and I'm sure all that doesn't help with the decision.

      Thanks for spotting the Router Table - It's from Axminster and was a big investment earlier in the year. I've plans to make a new cabinet with better dust management in the next couple of weeks so it will feature in a project video. I'm happy to do a review of it and the Hi-Koki router that powers it. I'll add it to the list.

    You've got it right working in your backyard keeping your overheads low.
    Your lighting is superb I thought you had skylights giving natural light at first.
    Need to get mine sorted. Just sub'd, I like your easy going relaxing format. Tony

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. The point at which I realised I'd measured the space wrong was when my day making a video went in a very different direction.
      I'm really happy with the lighting. I decided to not have any natural light into the workshop primarily for security but also cost at the time. The lights I've installed are from Strictly Lamps on EBay and comprise 10 x 48w 5600K LED panels throughout the whole space. I've a couple of changes to make to the lights to tidy-up the original installation so I may cover them on the channel at some point.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Do you think so? The first few shots were on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and then the rest was GoPro Hero 7. I must admit I was a little disappointed with the video quality. It was improved by adjusting the exposure on Final Cut. Audio wise I used a VideoMic Micro connected via USB C to the Go Pro. In Final Cut I had to bump up the levels +12db as it was very quiet and (as usual) apply a little compression.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Ah, good question. And yes I probably will - although I expect to change the saw next year for one with way better dust collection. My needs are much more general than you might see on channels that focus on commercial work, like fitted furniture. The mitre saw feels way more practical if I'm cutting dimensioned wood rather than sheet goods.
      I've been sketching out the deep dive on the MFT I mentioned in the video this morning and had a few thoughts about why I'll continue to regularly use both my table saw and my mitre saw.

    Hi there, your work space is cozy actually , a lot are dark and miserable . May I ask you something please - the black fence you use on your mft table it looks like to be around 40 mm X 80mm ,,,how long is it please and where did you get it ? Also your drill press what make /model is it please?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +2

      The workshop I really like the look and feel of is Matt's at Badger Workshop which I've visited where he has two big windows that flood the space with light. I've no natural light so getting things nice and bright was a priority. I've 10 large panel lights, plus studio lights if I need them.
      So the black fence is from benchdogs.co.uk (I used Peter Millard's 10MINUTEWORKSHOP code for 5% off). It's version 2 of their fence and I really like it. It's 1250mm long and has a 20cm mini fence that sits under the rail. It's got a few small niggles but the fence dogs which can attach to the original Festool fence are probably the best elements of the solution. The fence has a scale on it which I don't use. It makes it look nice I think but the tick marks are a bit too fat for my liking. That said I always measure with a ruler or tape on every tool I own and never trust the scale.
      The pillar drill is a FERM FTB-13 drill press which I got second-hand. It's OK, but changing the belt is a bit of a faff as I like the table at a good height for me (tall guy). There's quite a bit of run-out on the quill of the drill making it fine for woodwork but if I was an engineer I'd be pretty fed up with it by now.
