"It turns magic into Yu-Gi-Oh" is the best explanation ever of why black lotus is so broken
It's really not. Yu-Gi-Oh is much more straightforward while magic has more complicated steps to play.
Yugioh, straightforward
Those 2 words don't belong in the same sentence@@awesometubing9471
@@awesometubing9471 you really don't know how hard yugioh is in pro play
The idea though, is thay you can play a card of good strength by 'tributing' (using) other cards
@awesometubing9471 what??? Like the opposite is true. You're clearly not that familiar with either game
That Yugioh player looks super friendly and down to earth.
They all look the same but but Pokémon players are all gross. Even the pretty ones
My guess is it's because he isn't thinking about yugioh (I'm a yugioh player myself)
But how does he smell
@@felipemontes6010 The guy looks well-kept. Come on.
@@Dj87887 hay just saying both mtg and yugioh tournaments have rules on ppl smelling
...oh my god, so that is why the Black Lotus item in Isaac gives you ALL 3 types of HP (from when it was introduced)
Ah I see, you are a man of culture
Also notice that ancient recall, huge growth and i believe some other cards use a brown card icon : this is magic's card back design
Starter deck makes 5 color dots appear on Isaac's face : Magic's color circle
There are some other references to Magic I guess, but I cannot remember them all
@@Anaklusmos42theres a couple items named after magic cards, only one i can remember rn is saguine bond. Edmund mccmillen also designed a card for m15
@@Betex9s this I didn't know for the card he designed ! Incredible
Yup
There's a documentary about MtG going back to its inception and Garfield playtesting with some guys. One of the guys said, "I don't think the mox are any good. I mean, this green mox might as well be another forest."
One of the other testers said, "I'll trade you for a forest."
He said, "Ok." 😆
When I first started learning about MTG I thought the mox cards sounded fine. But I also only knew of Commander as a format at first. My husband had to explain that in standard this could mean that you could have 5 mana on turn 1 if you managed to draw all 4 of your mox cards. Apparently, the only reason the mox cards are banned in Commander is because of they weren't it would require either reprinting them or necessitating people spending thousands just to have a copy for commander
@@bboops23 exactly, we have to do what we can to keep mtg from being pay to win, while also enriching the trading community
@@CaitofFate if you are not playing with proxys only, it still is pay to win, the amount you have to pay is just "a little less"...

Can't believe a YGO player forgot the Pot of Super Greed principle.
If Konami unbans Pot of Greed and releases Pot of Super Greed that draws 3 cards for free instead of 2 you don't play PoSG instead of PoG: you play both.
Unless you're playing SHS
@@baxterbruce9827no they would still play it. Having a 31 card deck would be worth the risk.
@@DrAiPatch A LOT of SHS effects DEMAND a GY void of spells and traps
@@baxterbruce9827 ya thats why you would use them after you built your bored to get into hand traps
if both pot of greed and posg not banned and a real card people just no longer play super heavy samurai.
You wont able to beat a non meme with both of them generating plus out of tin air with SHS
Wish there was more emphasis on the fact you have to sacrifice the lotus whereas you keep the moxen
I was also wondering about it. I thought my memory is wrong. I'm not an MTG player, only played the 1997 video game.
Not really a downside though, it actually enables infinite mana loops more often
@mattjones2811 it's more of a 'In the vacuum of the question' sort of thing. Choosing 3 mana over 1 is a no Brainer. 3 one time use over 'permanent' 1 mana each turn is a little harder.
@@AwkwardDreamer true though im not surprised the yugioh player didnt care about that argument. Yugioh games are a lot faster than magic games so three immediate mana probably seemed like a no brainer to him.
@@doorkum The game where you fight monsters on a map? that game was so good I wish they'd make it again on a recent support
It’s all about resources in Magic, when you just all of the sudden get a boost of mana with something like black lotus, you probably have the upper hand.
tbf its all about resources in all card games
pot of desires is a -9 but its still constantly played in decks that require you to draw certain cards or brick
@@namo2403Desires is a straight +1 though, the whole point is that you didn't have access to the cards you got rid of anyway, so you don't lose advantage by using it.
My brother in christ desires is not -9. The cards you “lose” are not cards that you had access to anyway. Remember, cards in deck are as good as useless until you get them out of the deck.
The only drawback of desires is risk of losing important cards, which is why it is usually only played in decks that run several copies of their core cards so you are unlikely to ruin your strategy with bad luck
@@FilthyWeeb27 thats not how Yuigho works if your playing cards you don't have 16 ways to access your they are hand traps that you want in your hand.
@@DrAiPatch Ya and you get those handtraps in hand by playing desires. I am just pointing out that you cant go -9 in card advantage when you didnt have those 10 cards to begin with.
I wonder if people who think desires is -9 consider the start of the game as +35 with a full deck?
"Black Lotus" is so broken that a card that was literally designed to be 1/3 of a lotus ("Lotus petal") had to be banned for being a complete game-changer.
Yeah, but did you know that when I activate Pot of Greed it allows me to draw 2 additional cards from my deck?
Impossible, nobody knows what pot of greed does, just like Negate Attack...
I find it funny how Yu-Gi-Oh players understand magic, but magic players can't understand Yu-Gi-Oh
Magic players can understand most of yugioh. You lose them at weird summoning mechanics like XYZ and pendulums where reading the cards doesn't explain the card.
well mentioning the black lotus is gone afterwards and mox is not would also be important
Same thing I was thinking
The thing about the lotus is~ in the format it's legal in, the game is over before it matters
@@aWildKITsune This, you are probably dead before they equalize.
If you're not dead, it's because it's control shenanigans and your stuff is dead at least.
This is just for fun so don't take it too seriously;
An important thing to remember is that moxen and lands don't actually generate infinite mana only by the number of times it been tap. Its not very relevant when the games end in 1,2,or 3 turns. They do no represent infinite value when turns are finite, unless you combo off. Lands are also much worse due to being gated at once per turn but better in the sense that "destroy non-land permanents" is a common clause but obviously "as many moxes as you want" is way more powerful. Running lands risk bricking versus just running moxen, it mostly because all fast mana is limited to 1. It would be interesting to see how few lands would be run if it was unrestricted.
There also the matter of card efficiency being 1 card to get 3 mana, all color, and the reach of having more mana in a single turn to use a powerful spell, and opening up option that would be otherwise dead cards.
In the context of the game or format the fact that lotus is gone afterwards is NOT actually that important because the game is so fast and tempo loss so significant, the most valuable tap is the first one and each subsequent ones are less valuable, this is the Time Value of Mana since doing stuff now is more valuable then doing stuff later.
Even if you do manage to tap a mox for 3 times over 3 turns, the value of the mox still does not equalized the value generated by a B. Lotus and its unlikely 4 or 5 turns still appear to be "worth it".
Does sticking around add value, yes and we can analyze to what degree, Moxen>L.Petals barely and not in all situations. So a triple L.Petal condense into one card makes the most powerful cards in the game, the moxen, look terrible in comparison. Moxes are somewhere between 1< fast mana but
Don't forget you're talking about a yugioh player, where games may take a while, but are decided by turn 3 on average, so it wouldn't even equate to a black lotus by the time its over. Pace is huge in TCGs, and realizing how fast yugioh is compared to every other TCG puts into perspective that Konami needs to slow it the hell down to bring in new players
Its the pod of greed
Nah, that is ancestral recall
Facts this card is only comparable to Pokemon not Yu-Gi-Oh. Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't have a mana base or anything that makes them able to play the game by using a certain resource. Yu-Gi-Oh is magic without having to use mana.
But what does pot of greed do ?
@@awesometubing9471just imagine this as a spell that lets you special summon a Monster 3 tribute points higher than normal
@@awesometubing9471 That's not exactly true. Yu-Gi-Oh DOES have resources, but they're more ephemeral than Magic's. While Magic lets you do anything you want (outside of rare hard 1/turn effects), so long as you can pay for it, Yu-Gi-Oh does have the hard limit of only a single normal summon effect, outside of very rare effects that give you a second. Yu-Gi-Oh's resource is cards. Draw and searching is everything in Yu-Gi-Oh, the same way mana is everything in magic, so comparing Black Lotus to Pot of Greed is actually quite valid.
Theyre also just being a free artifact is nuts cause it combos with so much stuff, then you can pop it. The moxs are just artifact lands that aren't limited to your land drop, and those are already banned in half the formats they're legal in lol
I have never played magic do not know the anything about the rules except the words mana and land and even I know Black Lotus and the fact that it is OP as all get out
What video is this from? I don't remember it
Preview of future video!
The YGO player here is the new showhost for our YGO channel :) we've been recording videos and will launch that channel back up again in a week or two
@@CardmarketMagic That's great! Looking forward to it
Black lotus is basiclly for magic like what is pot of weed for yugi... its not a finisher, but it helps you to safely kill your enemy
It's a mana rock nothing more. It doesn't draw cards, help you search or anything like pot of greed.
Pot of weed lmao
Weed makes you not want to kill your enemy.
If there is one problem in Lotus is that it sacrifices and doesn't stay like the moxes. Still broken, but if it gets past turn 4 (and you dont reuse your lotus somehow) you got more advantage out of the mox
Where is the full video of this? I was looming for it, but can't find it.
I think you misunderstood his confusion what he meant to say "i don't think being stuck with one color isn't as important as your getting 3 vs 1" and what you said he took as: "you can make any 3 commination".
Remember when black lotus was the most expensive card in existence? Yeah now mana crypt has taken its place.
Horribly aged lmao
Aged poorly
what video is this from? I cant find it
A hint at the possible return of the Yu-Gi-Oh channel perhaps?
They really should it would boost sales and Yu-Gi-Oh just broke the world record for most attendance for a TCG event.

@@CardmarketMagic Niiice. Looking forward to both that channel and this channels content
New Yu-Gi-Oh host?? This guy seems great!
I’m not sure the value of three mana, but the way I interpret is if this was in yugioh is like discard one card for an extra normal summon lmao
Now I want a 1 shot 0 cast 3 colorless lotus to just really go wild with Eldrazi.
I play my pot of gre-oops i mean back lotus
The thing that makes lotus broken, is that you can just keep snagging it back from the gy over and over.
Fun fact in Digimon we hace something similar called hammer spark for 0 memory you get 2 memory, so far no meta deck have used that card for like 2 years
If we get it that heralds the end turn 2 almost every game I feel like this will ho well
Link to ep please.
It's definitely top tier power wise, but due to it being a one time use, it's not the most powerful. I'd have to give the most powerful card in magic to either ancestral recall or Yawgmoths will.
That would be time walk
With other powerful cards, once is all you need. Plus you can recur it
@@iankane3732 that one is certainly strong. But imagine being able to cast it again from the graveyard alongside black lotus, moxen, rituals and whatnot. If the card resolves, the game is often just over.
@@solcloudchaser4988 yawg's will is really only used in storm decks. Cards like black lotus, time walk, ancestral recall and sol ring are so flatly ridiculously powerful they go in every and any deck. Yawg's will is great but it requires other cards to be strong, the other cards stand alone. Yawg's will is not in the same conversation power level wise as the power 9.
@@solcloudchaser4988 if we are being 100% honest underworld breach is probably a better version of yawg's will at this point. There's a reason breach is banned in legacy and breach is a top tier deck in vintage, whereas yawg's will is legal in legacy and doesn't see much if any representation in vintage. Yawg's will isn't as good as it used to be either.
Black Lotus in Magic is like Pot of Greed in Yu-Gi-Oh. It's just a free resource that any deck can use
What does the last line of these cards mean?
im pretty sure the Moxes are more expensive cuz they dont get discarded like black Lotus does
I ACTIVATE POT OF GREED
Can we PLEASE have a deckmaster duel!
How do you have those cards?
But you also play card to get mana once! Cards are a resource as well, especially in MTG where 1/3 of your cards are lands.
do staple/ stinker but with price being the metric you're exploring- what does the 'upgraded' version of a card mean to your pocket? i'm thinking dark ritual vs lotus, stone rain vs sinkhole, that kind of thing. i mean, first and foremost you're a vendor and in a unique position to comment on the financial side of the game. or a bunch of cards with a similar effect and someone with no knowledge of the game try to rank them in order- how many were sold this month in a given category, like various mana rocks, various counterspells, black kill spells, etc etc. might be quite interesting to highlight trends in the game and present information that isn't just a wobbly line on a graph
price in that case would have nothing to do with power. The reason dark ritual is cheap and lotus is not isnt power, its availability. If black lotus would not be reserved list, it would be a 5 dollar card
Black Lotus is the one card I desperately want over anything
I mean, you know the card is good when it's literraly so good and popular that a whole TCG based magazine picked this card's name as its own name
I cant find thia video anywhere does anyone know what its called?
Well yeah, but it's also a testimony of the old design philosophy of magic. Black Lotuses were supposed to be very rare, and your opponent was supposed to have his own super rare cards to even it out.
In a competitive environment where everything gets all the cards they want it doesn't make sense.
Similarly, Pot of Greed in the early Yu Gi Oh days was a good card, but not the game breaker it became.
Context for this kind of cards is important, the game simply wasn't the same back then.
pot was broken the moment it came out what are you talking about? It was an auto-include from minute 1
Pot of Greed didn't "break the game" but it was pretty much a must-have in every deck since there wasn't a single downside to running it.
What episode is this from?
I dont understand magic but from what i can guess from what he said with the mana: is this card the equivilant of pot of greed?
Yes, and no. MTG works by a mana system restraining its action economy; in order to cast a card, you pay the cost listed at the top right. Black Lotus costs 0, free, taps (turns sideways, to 'exhaust' it) and then sacrifices itself (goes to GY.)
It taps for 3 of any color in a game where you can play one basic land (a seperate kind of card, typically say 'Tap : produce a mana of a color the card does creates') per turn, functionally ramping the speed you play at.
Pot of Greed is similar in that YGO has no mana restriction but you could compare it to skipping three turns worth of delay, and could also be used to draw more cards or get MORE mana, or play creatures...
I'd say it's similar to getting any card that gives you extra Normal Summons in how much it can drastically speed up building up a board.
Like evey game with a resource system to manage
The more something cheat at said resource system, the better it is
I wanna be a little bit of a jockey here, "Mox is 1/3 of a Lotus" is perfect. "It makes 3 of any colour" has just a single word missing, namely "single". It can make 3 R/B/W/G/K, but not 2+1. It doesnt really matter in the scheme of this short, but a detail that could be overlooked in the moment.
That and you have to sacrifice the lotus
mox? like the ones in the hit indie game inscryption?
So it the equivilent of Pot of Greed
bur you did not mention the sacrifice
"I summon POT OF GREED!"
Nah, that would be the equivalent of special summoning a low level mob.
Think, even the weakest/lowest cost big boys/boss fellas is 5-6, black lotus doesn’t come close to that. And I’ve always thought black lotus was a one off effect
We're talking about a format that is absolutely busted though. 2 mana can take you an extra turn. 3 can reset every one's hands. 1 can draw 3 cards. 1 can grab any card in your deck and put it on top, 2 can put any card from your deck into your hand. So 3 mana for free on turn one is absolutely devastating.
Sure, your analogy is kinda accurate, but only if you don't realize that my cards that cost 3 or less are equivalent in power level to your strongest boss monsters..
I own an original like, first print, black lotus
But isn’t the issue that black lotus is discarded?
Mox is reusable black lotus one time use
What's funny is some people believe that sol ring is in some ways better than black lotus. Or the one ring is better than ancestral recall.
@@awesometubing9471 These are reasonable takes, sol ring is in many cases better then lotus, both see extensive vintage play
@@ich3730 Seeing the same amount of play in the same format does not mean they are on the same power level. Context is every thing. Both cards are similar in what they do but they're still not on the same power level. They're both restricted to 1, so people want to use any thing that is similar to Black Lotus. Sol Ring does have some upsides to it of course, but it doesn't match the raw power that Lotus has.
Black Lotus is great. But it doesnt fully help that much with multi-colored creatures.
So? If you're playing with lotus and moxen then the deck you got ain't playing many if any multicolor spells.
@@tonysmith9905 fair. It's just it has a weakness. Granted its a small one, but still a weakness.
I SUMMIN POT OF GREED
Basically, most cards in magic are going to look bad in a yugioh players point of view while most cards in Yu-Gi-Oh are going to look overpowered in a magic players point of view
black lotus only makes three mana of one color for all three mana produced!! It's just a free dark ritual but with the ablity to change the color it produces!
MAGIC PLAYER I HAVE THE SAME SHIRT AS YOU!!!
But lotus only works once, I feel like this video was designed to bait me into correcting it with a comment
Yugioh is more like you can play small guys for free and then smash them together into hyper consistent boss monsters like its a combining mecha anime
Black Lotus is Graceful Charity, Mox is Pot of Greed
You have to sacrifice Black Lotus. So you only get 1 turn.
It’s so cool they got Asmongold’s well groomed cousin, Asmonplatinum
Let me get this straight, I play a land, 1 lotus, and a blue mox. Then I can tap my mox, play a time walk, and I get an extra turn..... and then start over.....
This game is bonkers.
I mean, all of those (minus the land) are very old and very expensive cards. They're also banned in effectively every format. So they don't have any impact on modern play.
Im getting pot of greed vibes
>_> nearly every big monster has a summon cost.
That is not how yugioh works but I get what you mean
This is the first time I realized that black lotus is an artifact and not just a spell. So just an extra 3 mana on every single turn. Jesus.
You have to sacrifice it to get the mana, so you have to find a way to get it back onto the field to keep using it. Which is absolutely doable, but it does require a combo of some kind
It's one (of the many) things that make Lurrus one of the most overpowered card in Vintage. Before the companion nerf you could Lotus out Lurrus and replay the Lotus.
Black lotus is if pot of greed drew four
You should have told him you can only use it once instead of repeatedly
He had the card in front of him and read it :) he knows what they do
Everybody knows what lotus is
Technically works cost 0 dollars to make 600 dollars lol

Where is he getting that kind of money?
That is one of the reasons why I can't play 50 copies of it 😅

Crumbling Sanctuary let's you play the DBZ card game from late 90s

Nothing in Magic turns Magic into Yugioh other than if they ever print a card that gives you unlimited mana.
Pretty sure there's literally a card that gives you 1000 mana from one of the joke sets
It's close enough

Mox Lotus
15 to cast
T: infinite mana.
100: to add one mana of a color to mana pool.
You don't lose life to mana burn.
Omniscience lets you play everything for free, that's pretty close
We have multiple cards that make your deck free. We also have hundreds of combos that make you gain infinite mana. Both dont create an experience close to yugioh, since these combos end the game instantly, you never have infinite mana long enough to "play the game like yugioh"
Dinomorphia? 🤔
I mean if you really want to get technical, a hexproof, indestructible Omniscience actually turns MTG into Yu-Gi-Oh.
You also have to be able to get it on the board turn one tho.
MTG Arena has had omniscience cube for a few years now, just google that format.
And black lotus is banned in every single format
Can someone explain why mtg players hate on yugioh players (hate is strong but lack of a better term) I mean I play both causally but when I look at the pro side of both games all I see is broken mechanics left and right 😂
Okay this whole "yugioh cards are free" thing nerds a check, yes theres no mana but the cost is the card advantage, ideally you'd want all your cards to go net zero or +1 but some required are -1 or -2 etc, just because we dont have a resource system doesnt mean its "free".
Think of how fast the game is in comparison to mtg, y'all can basically have breakfast and lunch together so of course you're version of cost is different.
Anyways rant over 🙄
Oh yes I am a Yu-Gi-Oh player and I realize that I'm always in every magic the gathering player's head 24/7 rent free and you know that's okay someone has to clean up that head sometimes
Moxen are better then black lotus. Unless your t1 winning
As a yugioh player, this dude does not represent yugioh. He didn't throw up or refuse to touch mtg cards and he isn't 14 and angry or 34 and angry.
Tl;dr - ygo is a bad game. Mtg is so much better it's insane. #bankashtira&snake-eyes
Idk gusy, yu gi oh isn't really comparable to a mana system.
That is not how Yu-Gi-Oh works
yugioh rn is way more broken than lotus because lotus is a minus one to ur hand while yugioh one card starter makes you plus 10
Only plus 10 what kind of unoptimized deck are you playing Dark world?
But mana advantage is important.
@@DrAiPatch Bro you know what I meant, i just did not want to make magic players cry too much.
Why do that when you could play yugioh
i'm showing you one of the most expensive cards in the game, but were still talking about the black lotus, which is the most expensive card... i feel dumber now listening to this.
These days we freecast or reanimate the biggest monsters for 1, so we don’t really need mana.
We need mana on turn one to win the game before the opponent gets the opportunity to react.
The only thing stopping Black Lotus is counterspells that don't cost mana.
Now imagine if it wasn’t 3 mana of any single color but 3 mana of any color, meaning you can choose three different colors at most. The card would go from utterly broken to just the god cards or exodia status
Who TF even is he? I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh since 2001. Idk who this guy is or even if he's good. He's not Pak, he's not Yacine, he's not Jesse Kotton and ain't an influencer for Yu-Gi-Oh.
Why did you get a person who says they play Yu-Gi-Oh but isn't Yu-Gi-Oh famous?
Different countries can have their own famous players who aren't famous otherwise, because they don't speak english and they don't make their own content. They just participate in tournaments and win.
So negative, he could be good, he could be a new addition to the ygo creators and personalities we know. Id welcome a new face in the ygo content i watch.
And I do not care about any name mentioned… I just ask for Joschua Schmidt back at their Studio 🎉
I mean, none of the MTG hosts are known names too ( beside maybe thoralf, have seen him at events ). Nobody gives a fuck who carl is, yet we still love to watch him
Also, everyone and their grandmother fucking owns one, and has seen one... 🙄
Black Lotus is such an overrated card. The actual greatest card in all of magic is Ancestral Recall
Mox Emerald so low tier.
