- Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I continue to explain the second Chapter in ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 4. In this tutorial I I explain how to convert between alto, treble and bass clef without altering pitch.
I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 4 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.
Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.
I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Yikes, I'm not very good with the alto clef now that I think of it : ( Maybe I should watch these videos more and refer to the PDF's more so I improve.
Amazing video though!😀😀😀
BTW, nice henna on your hands! Did you do it? Very pretty.
I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable with the alto clef, as I never play the instrument that uses is (the viola). However, you do get used to working through the exercises and double checking it.
Thanks! My husband drew it on for me 😊
6:48, Sharon do you know why it goes down not up? I'm quite confused. I thought we just have to transform that bass clef into alto clef, I just don't know why we have to remove the bass clef and transform that "G" down.
It's because it's moved from treble clef to bass clef in the original exercise. Keep middle C as your reference point. Because it's moved to bass clef it's the G below middle C which is one step lower than the previous note which is the A below middle C written in treble clef.
@@SharonBill Thank You Sharon, I got it now.
Super!!
Hi Sharon, I was wondering, where is the video that talks about the beginning of alto clef? To be specific page 10?
I'm not sure why it's not there on the playlist. (I'll look into that.) However, here is the link:

Hey Sharon, did you notice that from alto to treble you just move the note down six places?😊
That's one way of sorting it! (My brain doesn't cope with numbers too well, so it wouldn't work for me 😂)
Hi sharon, do you know the syllabus for abrsm grade 4 2020?
I haven't had a thorough look into the new syllabus yet.I'm waiting for the new books (though you can look on the ABRSM website). There isn't much difference from before - just a couple of extra items won't be on the exam. So, if you're working in the Music Theory in Practice Workbook you will be 'over prepared' - which isn't a bad thing!
It shouldn't be too different from this, hope this was what you were looking for!

Hi! You’re videos are so great but I cant find the video for Alto Clef part 1?
I'm not sure why this happens. I schedule the videos in order and then they get all mixed up?!? Here is the link:

@Sharon bill, where is part 1?
It should be in order on the playlist?? (I don't know why, but sometimes the order gets muddled - for no obvious reason). Here is a link to the video:

😊😊😊
thanks
You are very welcome :D
Nice fingers, Sharon! Looks cool :P
Happy Henna :D
:D
😊
Whew!
What is an alto clef, anyway?
Grade 4’s sooo hard!
😖
How do u use it?
It is tricky if you don't use this clef (I don't and I always have to just count it out to work out the notes.). It's a clef used by viola players. However, do work to get to grips with it as there is yet another clef (the tenor clef) in Grade 5.
@@SharonBill I play beginners violin but sadly there isn't any use of the alto clef ( only treble clef ) ! Otherwise, if I understood it on violin, this new clef would be no problem! But, I am not good at violin or quite good in music theory! THESE VIDEOS HELP!
