  • I got a bit fed up with keep trying to cut the top of my beech hedge whilst atop my wobbly ladder I also needed a set of taller steps to do some tree work, so I invested in a Hedgemaster.
Disclaimer: I purchased my Hedgemaster at full price and do not receive any compensation for mentioning them in this video.

the platform ladders are the best invention for hedge trimming

I agree and I certainly feel a lot safer using the platform than my dodgy stepladder.

Certainly an improvement on the first death trap ladder you put up! The new platform might benefit from some wheels so you can just tilt it over and roll it into position - save you lifting 17kgs of ladder all the time.

quedecree a couple of wheels would be a good idea as you suggest but they'd have to be lockable, else I might end up rolling down the slope of my garden😃

Put them on a bracket (or use fixed casters) at right angles - then they only contact the ground when you tip the ladder over. One of those 13ft Henchman Hi Steps would awesome but I have a feeling they'll be really expensive, if available at all, down here in Aus.

quedecree I had a look at the henchman, it was a close call between that and what I eventually bought, but I thought the relatively narrow steps on the henchman wouldn't give me the same sense of security as a large platform, especially when using power tools. From memory the legs of the hedgemaster platform can be extended by up to 90cm independently in 3mm increments so is good on uneven surfaces, like my garden, it's also got large pad feet to spread the load on soft soil of my borders. I think the henchman only has one adjustable leg (the third leg), but if I was cutting hedges commercially I think I would have gone for the henchman for its easy set up and portability.

Will you be making a part two for this video once you are able to speak about it without being distracted by the assembly process?

Thanks for the post Wayne. I've used this platform quite a few times since purchasing it and as it's nearly time for me to cut my hedge again I can certainly post a follow up video. Is there anything specific that you would like to know or for me to cover?

      UKGardening Thanks for your reply!
I would like to know how much of a hill the maximum adjustment allows for.

    • @UKGardening

Each leg can be independently adjusted in 3mm (1/8") increments up to 60cm (2ft) I'll measure the distance between the feet when opened, which should give the maximum gradient of incline/hill. I'll get a video together to show this and post it as soon as possible.

      UKGardening That's awesome!
I thought when you had mentioned 1/8 inch adjustment that it only was a fine tuning sort of thing but that sound very versatile!
It seems to me every time I set up a ladder it's on a hill of some sort.
      Thanks again for that info.....!

No one stocks this kind of ladder in USA.

I suspect that it's quite expensive for manufacturers to get safety certification in different geographical region, which is perhaps why the Hedgemaster isn't available in the USA. I've had a quick look on the web and it seems that US company Little Giant Ladders produce something similar littlegiantladders.com/ladder/adjustable-safety-cage/ but I can't verify if it has the same flexibility as the Hedgemaster. I hope this helps, regards Nick
