In this coaching course filmed exclusively for CV Academy, John Prince, senior youth development phase coach at Blackburn Rovers, takes his players through a series of practices designed to develop their ability to exploit the moment of attacking transition.
This excerpt comes from the second practice in the session. It features a four-goal transition game, in which two teams of four aim to retain possession in the centre circle; a pressing team of four attempts to win the ball back and score into one of four mini-goals positioned on the outside.

Blackburn has produced some amazing players over the years. They are underrated is putting it mildly.

How does this replicate a game situation? If your focus is on the defenders and the attacking side has 8 players and you have 4 in the central part of the field it’s not realistic in spacing to any phase of them game.

This is a session on pressing and counter pressing in a small sided manner, it’s 3 teams of 4, two teams of 4 vs 4 (8v4) emphasis is to win ball or know when to press and when to cut passing lanes off. Not every drill has to be 11v11 when building philosophy at small age it’s important you give them a blank canvas to paint the ideas on before putting it in game scenario. For ex this session is about being reactive as defenders, once this goes into 11v11 the coach then could add wrinkles such as pressing triggers or cues. You just have to study the game besides 11v11 because not every team has 22 or 23 players so you have to use small sided and small sided positional games to get message across
