  • Mego did a really good job when it came to creating the toys for Disney's The Black Hole. There are only some many characters shown in the movie and they made most of them (even if some of the toys are extremely rare! ). Watching the movie again recently I realised there were a couple that hadn't been made that could easily made using what we do have. And one of those was a Humanoid disguise for Kate McCrae and Dan Holland. So let's get on with the project.

    A couple of years ago a British, mego, customizer sold me the four figures you mentioned. Reinhardt in the alt outfit, probe pilot, Kate and Dan in humanoid disguise. He also did great repos humanoid, star and old bob. All carded, love this set. Yours look great!

    Your cape solution actually looks much better than the one for the Humanoid figure that was released. Well done.

    Fun fact: I got to see The Black Hole before it came out. Father worked at Disney World, and we got tickets to a lot of stuff. This was before everybody got greedy. We saw it in a theater located behind "It's a Small World".
    Movie gave me nightmares. 😆

    Following the curve of your thumb is a really nice trick. I went to school for apparel design, and one of the tricks I learned was that the natural arc of your wrist is a better french curve than french curves are. Just set your wrist down on one side and let it pivot while you draw your line, and you'll always make a perfectly formed sleeve opening. The golden ratio shows up all over the articulation and lines of the human body.
    Maybe that'll be useful to you at some point? I dunno. You do a good job of patternmaking for toys.

    I recently acquired Maximillian without his stand and got the idea of crafting a stand using the caps off a Display Port cable glued to a clear oval. If you get a packaged DP cable, they usually have these plastic caps over the metal ends to protect them. Max's skinny legs slide right in.

    Black Hole was a real tough act...
    It ranks up there with the Star Trek movie, as the figures were all a great mixed bag, and great to put your own names and teams to.
    Even today though- the movie is unsettling.

      Great movie - but not really for kids. A classic 'Haunted House In Space' movie, featuring a monomaniac (whose mute robot henchman is now in charge) attempting to become a god. How kid friendly is that?

  • @portland-182
    @portland-182 7 месяцев назад +2

    How about putting some milliput in the back of the resin faces, and custom fitting them? You'd get the smoothness of the resin, and the fit of the milliput...

      This is what I was thinking as well. I believe strong hold hairspray (sprayed and allowed to dry) should work as a release agent from the cling film.

  • @Poisso3
    @Poisso3 6 месяцев назад

    I really enjoyed this video! The process how you made the masks was great to see. I remember doing something simular 25 years ago when I made custom GIjoes and Transformers. I used Milliput to make a Cobra Commander w/ removable faceplate. It was ok, but not as nice as your work here if I had access to UV resin, I would try for a combination of the two. Milliput pressed into the face and sanded down to fit inside the resin cast to have the best of both materials.

    Amazing as always, have you ever thought of customs for the figures. Of the iconic weapons from the movie ???.

  • @black0sheep
    @black0sheep 7 месяцев назад

    As I was watching this I thought acrylic nails would be about the right size and shape for the masks. You can still use the Milliput to mold to the faces and it should have the nice smoothness the masks need. Plus they take paint like a champ.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 месяцев назад +1

      Nails are actually pretty flat and don't have the roundness needed to make the masks. Milliput gives a much better result.

    Love your tryouts and rejects, and the fun you are having collecting.
    Are the masks interchangeable or only fit one fig, that would be my gripe.
    Plus, the masks are loose…not a real problem, but still.
    I love a collector that has fun with his collection.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 месяцев назад +1

      Cheers. The masks will fit there respective figure heads only as the shape of their heads are very different and are held in place by the capes. I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but these work well enough for me.

      Was thinking of that, too. Most dollar stores/pound shops have cheap sets for nail art, and around Halloween, you might even find sets in seasonal stores and make-up displays that are already chromed. Superglue on the inside surface, a little ring of flat elastic, and you could have a quick, cheap, and passable mask.
