I made a few bad throws in practice the other day and every since then I’ve been trying to fix it and in the process I’ve completely lost my release point. Hopefully this video helps.
@@JAMuUP i really don’t know what worked, because i’ve been playing since i was 9 and it’s been fine until like a month ago. i guess i practiced my throwing motion whenever i could to create muscle memory, and when it came to games i was doing great
@@JAMuUP in practice, i used to try different releases, like releasing it higher when i was farther and when i was closer, to release it lower to keep the ball on a line. i guess after not trying to over complicate it too much, and just letting myself get into a rythym, helped me create muscle memory for it. i do agree tho, i tried to improve it because of my coaches and i completely ruined it. it’s all about preference, and try to stay as consistent with your old form as you can. if you make bad throws trying to fix it, it’s just your body getting used to it, don’t think about it too much. baseball is not the sport that you would want to dwell on something you did bad, just brush it off and move on. i feel like owning up to your throwing partner or whoever’s catching the ball if you make a bad throw makes it better
@@JAMuUP also, i found out that your hips really help with alleviating the pain from throwing, and keeping your catching-side shoulder closed helps the ball be more accurate, and getting your arm back more helps generate more power and helps with the pains also
@@JAMuUP yeah, that’s basically what i was trying to say. instead of trying to stay completely faced towards your target, i usually turn my hips so i’m facing sideways towards my target, with my opposite shoulder(the one i’m not throwing with) kind of turned away from my target and it’s close to my body. that helps me create tension, and it becomes sort of a spring. when i throw the ball, everything loosens, and it allows for some extra power and keeps my throw on a line.
My daughter plays 10U travel softball and your videos always are a big help.. this one especially. My daughter has a big arm for her small size but the thumbs-down tip you gave it the end made all of her rotation correct and her throws hell of a lot straighter.

Thanks a lot! This helped me to help my two nephews (they are 8 years old and 9 yrs old) and they are goofy when they throw. Because of this page they look WAAAAY better from when they started this summer.
I know it’s a really late reply but you made me get in the team I was so excited I was never taught to throw a ball before now I’m doing it fluently and accurately thank you
Good stuff, never have liked pointing towards center. Always uncomfortable to me. Loose comfortable connected movements makes sense. I never liked elbow above shoulder either.
I just want to say baseball is my favorite sport EVER! I grew up as a kid loving to hit pitching with friends. I was to young and started on a tee league before little league. I hated it. Unfortunately at a young age I quit and went to Ice Hockey. I never regret it but baseball is and was my dream to learn things from official training. Here I am no 39 years old and I enjoy just learning and practicing techniques for fun and exercise and I play with a local group of beginners and having a blast and using your videos to learn like im a kid! I have no delusions of being a player I just do it 100% for fun and health, but I am also a perfectionist who likes to learn right!
Thank you for this! My middle boy is on 8U this year, and he has a quick release and it pretty accurate, but he's tossing rainbows! All the other videos I watched said to "look back and see your knuckles" and I, too, thought that felt very unnatural! I'm much happier to teach this to my little guy.
1. keep everything tight to body, strong control, connected tight, for hitting as well 2. feet right left, 1:10 3. break hands, equal and opposite 4. fingers on top of ball, pointing towards the ground for as long as possible not behind, then at the top points towards 3rd base if on pitching mound, hand not pronated, more supinated 3:45 5. pronate hand on follow through, point fingers towards target and thumb to opposite pocket 5:40 6. finish with chin, nose, chest, over front knee
Speaking on the outfielders aspect... Willie Mays has said that he made "bread basket" catches because it allowed him to transfer the ball to his throwing hand much faster. I surmise that catching technique also helped him to keep everything tight before a throw, like you mentioned.
Just my opinion but as a general rule, I would not purposely try to basket catch unless absolutely necessary. Willie Mayes was an exception and could do that but it's much better to get under the ball and catch with glove pointing up. Too needlessly risky to make basket catches for every catch just for the sake of keeping it tight. Players should be able to keep their bodies sufficiently tight enough catching flyballs upright. Those basket catches are awesome though!
Really great video, someone pointed me in your direction after watching one of my videos on the tennis serve. So many similarities between the throw and the serve action. Thanks ⚾️🎾
In your “How to Throw a Baseball” video from DEc 15, 2016 at 4:17, you suggest pointing the ball back to second base after you break. Have you since changed your mind? Or is that pitching specific. Would like to know what to teach my little leaguers. Thanks!
Thanks. My uncle is getting all of us who used to play ball and get on a softball team all together when I move back in about 2-3 years and I haven’t played since I was 8 😂. I’m 21 and I’m gonna get back into rhythm before I embarrass myself 😂. Every now and then my dad and I will go play catch and I forget how to throw because I throw a football so much more so I’ll just let go where I know to and it will go flying in the air to him and I’m like “Sorry dad. Forgot how to throw 😂.” I think it’s because I throw a football so much more for the reason my muscle memory for throwing a baseball is gone 🤷♂️
I do have a question, do you wrap or tape up your ankles or feet . Do baseball players tape up feet and ankles to keeping from twisting them ? Do you recommend any compression gear ? Do you wear any?
Hey man! If I had a sprained ankle or it was tweaked a little bit, I'd tape my ankles. Typically I never felt the need to though. I never wore any compression gear on my arm, just sliding shorts obviously. The only other area I'd occasionally tape is my wrists for more support - and a little bit of swag ;) haha

So, maybe I’m overthinking, but my daughter has decided to play baseball versus softball. With her having a different center of gravity, should her throwing basics be modified?
Thoughts on the verbal cue of "leading with your elbow". I know a lot of kids lock their arms out and do not have proper elbow flexion for improved velocity. Also want to make sure that "leading with your elbow", doesn't cause elbow issues. Thanks Justin, really enjoy your videos brudda
Leading with the elbow is what naturally happens in the throwing motion, but I'm not convinced that you should use it as a verbal cue or really focus on that when you throw. I can try to do a video discussing this topic more soon. Thanks for watching man!
