In 1949, I was only 4 years old. I have many happy memories of growing up in Hong Kong. Looking at these videos fills me with nostalgia. Thanks for sharing video. God bless you.

My grandfather worked at Sun Company Ltd from the late 1920's until his death. And around the corner, he and my dad lived in a tiny laneway. This video is the only image I have seen of it. Even though it was a glimpse and that of the Sun Co. sign, it was empowering to my family history. Thank you for posting.

Hi Mr Rogge I've been tracking your videos and I gota say they are beyond classic... with the voice recording which is extremely rare it gives me the perspective that I have always wanted. I have seen lots of old videos and photos but they can never give me the real time feeling until yours were posted on here. Thank you for your effort for both keeping such brilliant films and editing them for the internet.

Thanks for this additonal info. It gives an extra dimension to the images. It was a hard life indeed, yet accepted in equanimity.

Sheung Wan is still a very traditional HK neighbourhood, so different from Central just next door.

    It's really valuable!
In hk, we seldom have the chance to watch videos of the 1940s hk. I've only seen some old photos when I went to the museums. It's so funny to see such vivid scenes with sound.

    Mr. Rogge,
Excellent video again!Sheung Wan Market is for middle class local people shopping. People shopped 2X per day.(middle class had no fridge) Preserved salty duck,Chinese sausage for special occasions.Apples were from China,Mackintosh type, Delicious was too expensive from US and only for someone like you. Vendor/Hawker made $1-2/day.Hair cut 20 cents.one bowl of rice 10 cents. Children usually no school and Child labor was common. Dept.store Sun was top four in HK.

Hi @MichaelRogge , thanks for sharing these valuable footages of HK! I do wish I live in this time of HK~
I would like to ask if you have taken any public transportation, particularly tram before, and if you have ever seen anyone with birdcages with birds boarding please? Sorry for this very random and specific question, as I am trying to gather some information about the bird culture with tram history :) xxx

It irritates me very much that some people view china and its ways as bad especially in 2020, we in fact have china to thank for so many things sanitation for one thing, the culture and the country itself is so beautiful and full of hard working people, these videos are amazing to me it's like people watching through history, fantastic work sir
