      @@ThomasMuehler Ok, following up since receiving my monitor (thankfully only arrived a day later than expected) finally arrived. I have a LOVE, dislike relationship with it so far. I absolutely love the functions it has. Screen size, color accuracy, ease of use in switching between inputs. The brightness works perfectly for my use case and the clarity alongside the game mode is awesome. This is where my dislikes start. Unfortunately for me, realizing where the limitations are in PiP and side by side really sucks. Being able to have both the usbc side and hdmi side up on the screen at the same time is something I thought it could do and would be exactly what I purchased it for. Also, I’ve noticed that the apps picture qualities absolutely suck. I thought it was just my internet, but switching to my PS4 showed me that that was not it. They just don’t display the 4k as it should. No matter the app used. There are small other things, but this is already kind of long, so I’ll stop here. I don’t think I’ll return it, but the small light seepage in the bottom corners of the screen is a slight concern but I think it just how it’s built and placed into the shell itself. Thanks for the review and interaction!

      @@paapaa I appreciate you getting back to me! I love reading these types of comments.
      I should have tested out the PiP a bit more. As I think I tried most everything except trying both the USB C and HDMI. And see now that it doesn't work. :(
      I definitely didn't notice any issues with the apps picture qualities with mine. I even double checked just now and they all look like they are where they should be at. Are you sure the TV is connected to the correct wi-fi network and the signal is strong?
      Also, I didn't notice any light seepage on the bottom corners of the screen on my device that I would consider abnormal (as I believe this is an edge lit display).
      Also, I'm always down to hear any and all complaints on a device and don't have a problem with long comments.
      I am sorry that it isn't everything you hoped it would be and I hope my review didn't give you false expectations because that is the last thing I want. I'm wondering if you maybe got a defective panel?

    • @paapaa

      @@ThomasMuehler Not at all! Your review was awesome! Honestly I think it may be the apps, which is honestly weird to say. I have both it and my PS4 hooked up to my Google wifi, which I specifically use for “quality control” in my place. Not sure if you’re an anime watcher, but I test with Demon Slayer (alongside Sling with it being a heavy pull for streaming) since the animation is as close to perfect that we have. On my PS4 (which is first gen, not even a pro) the picture quality, for lack of better words, is amazing. Which lets me know it’s not the panel or my internet. At least I don’t believe.
      I’m hoping that the longer I have it and it stays connected or gets “acclimated” in my place, that it is able to process better.
      As for it not being everything I wanted, it’s really a small miss in the grand scheme of things. Easily being able to say “Alexa, switch to PC or Hdmi” works quickly and seamlessly. Super quick. And since it’s smart, it auto knows when to kick into game mode for hdmi. Also, as a new thing I’ve just noticed, if it turns off while connected to your PlayStation, when you turn then monitor back on with the remote, it auto turns the PS back on as well. New love feature lol.
      Ultimately, I think I’m going to love it. I think after a while, I won’t even notice the seepage any longer since both spaces are very small and the productivity I am able to flex, just…. works. The only other new quirk I’ve noticed for some strange reason, and it could honestly be my early onset user error, is that when the monitor is off, Alexa isn’t able to wake it like I’ve seen others who use Bixby, be able to do. But the remote is still a phenomenal addition, so no sweat there.
      Always happy to drop in my experience where I can. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more reviews like this one and the growth of the channel.

    Great review! However, I think I'm going to keep my M7 due to the fact that the price of it went up dramatically. Now, if they offered a trade-in for the M7 to upgrade to this device then I would consider purchasing it. I think I'm going to upgrade to the M9 next year. Keep up the good work!

      @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад +2

      Man, I would love for companies to do a trade in program to upgrade. That would be awesome.
      But I think you're making the right choice. Waiting for the M9 is probably a good call. I found the M7 to be a good idea and well executed for the price (but still very lackluster). I think the M8 does most things well but not great. The M9 will hopefully have higher brightness, higher refresh rate, better port selection, better processor, and a more impressive screen that would make it a good all arounder to hopefully a must have.

    Nice review, been preordering it since day one in my country and waiting to be delivered on end of May. I like the design and hopefully it will satisfy me using it in a lot of my needs. The whole package is really worth it since they sold it around $760 in my country then discount it almost $140 and also giving me free logitech keyboard and mouse also 1 year free subscription of Microsoft Office 365 only when you buy it as a preorder. Means with $620, i'll get the M8 Monitor and also free logitech keyboard and mouse + 1 year subs of Office 365.

    Wow, really solid review. You struck what feels like a good balance and reviewed it for what it is. Many reviews on the M series monitors are explicitly sponsored and feel that way, are "no tech only vibes" or are "why is this not as good as a $1600 Apple display?" I think you're the only reviewer I've seen to note that a bluetooth speaker connected to the display works for connected video sources as well as smart features. I hope you get to renew the M series refresh models. The new M8 M80C looks only slightly improved.
    Random thoughts (I know it's a year later, maybe another M-series owner will show up?)
    Do bluetooth keyboards and mice paired with the monitor also control USB-C connected computers?
    It looks fidgety, but can the camera port be used for other devices?
    Will the USB data out port work with USB-C audio devices like headphone adapters? I mean, I guess it'd work for connected computers, but I wonder if Tizen would understand it.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Год назад +1

      Man I really appreciate the kind words. Means a lot.
      I've got the release date one so I'm not sure how it compares to the newer models as I haven't looked at this for a while. As I think the B and C as you mentioned have now come out. And in my settings it just says M801.
      I tested your questions:
      To answer your first question. Bluetooth keyboards/mice connected to the monitor with a laptop connected via USB-C DID NOT work in controlling the laptop. You'd have to connect directly to the PC.
      USB Data Out Port (which is the one right next to the DC 20V Power Port) DID work for a USB-C to 3.5 mm Aux adapter (like you'd use on an iPad or something to get audio delivery). I'm not sure if that is exactly what you had in mind or not. Which was pretty neat and to be honest I wasn't totally expecting.
      Just for fun I connected a USB-C Hub to the same thing. Plugged in a keyboard and mouse to that hub and it worked on the laptop that I had attached via USB-C. However, as expected the desktop I had connected via HDMI did not register the mouse/keyboard.

    This is the review Ive been waiting for! Thinking about getting this for a casual editing machine (light photos and videos), as I like the size, resolution, speakers, airplay support etc. Is this a bad idea for editing? Thanks!

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад +2

      Yes, I think this would be a good monitor for a casual editing machine. As the screen size is going to be great, the color accuracy is good (sRGB 100%), and so is the contrast ratio. So it should give you solid results.
      With that said the only downsides I can find is that I don't know the coverage for Rec2020 and like I said I wasn't able to get 10 Bit color to work. So you'll be stuck in 8-bit. Unless if you figure out a way to activate the "up to 1 billion colors" which technically sounds like 10 bit. But again for "casual" video editing this shouldn't be an issue anyways. As having the perfect color and contrast isn't critical. Just being close is enough. Plus you get a bunch of other features if you want.
      But if you aren't going to use the other features you can get a lot nicer basic monitor (color accuracy wise) for around the same price or less. So really comes down to what you are looking to get out of it.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Год назад

      I've been trying to remember to check my monitor at home but I keep forgetting as I answer RUclips comments at work and this isn't my main monitor. Word comes preinstalled, which is why you don't need a laptop/phone for it. I only use word (not google docs) so I didn't even pay attention to if it is also installed or not. Or even if it can be. When I was using Word directly from the monitor it was quite frustrating. As there as a significant amount of lag and latency. So I wouldn't recommend it regardless. I've been meaning to check personally and if I can actually remember I'll get back to you. I don't remember if I show it in the video or not, but if you see me launching word (or that page in the review) I'd imagine that would be where google docs would be. I also, know it has an app store. But I can't remember what it had. As again, this processor while better than the M7 is still terrible compared to most modern electronics and will be limiting.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Год назад

      Okay, so I actually remembered. I just went and it looks like the Microsoft 365 is just a link to the web page variant of it. Not actually installed on the monitor itself. I was able to go to Google Docs the same way through the webpage. However, it did give me a warning that "this browser is no longer supported". However, it saved my word document to the cloud and worked just fine. I was not able to download the dedicated application for Word, Microsoft, or Google/Google Docs. So, it appears internet is required. Also, it is quite laggy. So I still advise using either your phone (and sharing your screen) or a laptop to do that type of work. As I think you'd have a lot better results and save a lot of time.

    Hi Thomas, great review, however, you mention in your review that this supports HDMI ARC. This is not true, surprisingly only M5 and M7 have ARC support. Would have bought M8, but since Samsung missed out on ARC for this monitor, had to skip! Very disappointing that higher quality monitor missed out on HDMI ARC, it is not possible to have wired connection to a sound bar which is necessary, the speakers on the monitor are crap 😢

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Год назад +1

      First, I appreciate the callout. As I hate getting things wrong in my videos. I'm not 100% sure where I got that it has HDMI ARC. I'm wondering if I meant to say and/or got confused with HDMI-CEC? Where are you getting your information that it DOESN'T have Arc?
      As, looking into this feature technically ARC is included in the HDMI 1.4 spec but the port itself is usually listed on the back of the device, which it isn’t on this guy. With multiple ports they pick one to have it. But this monitor only has a single Micro HDMI 2.0 port with limited room so wonder if they just didn’t list it. I don’t see ARC listed anywhere in the documentation either. But don’t see it for the M7 either (but do see the confirmation on the port itself). So, I could see why it would appear it doesn't have it.
      However, in the settings of the monitor if I go into the Sound Settings - Expert Settings -- Digital Audio it mentions ARC. However, it also says "on supported models" but doesn't say which those are or that this one doesn't have it. I don't see anywhere to enable/disable ARC (outside of that setting I mentioned which is either Auto or PCM). But Samsungs Tizen layout is stupid and often doesn’t list things like normal so I’m unsure if that is Tizen or it not having it. I tried the manual. But they use the same manual for multiple devices so don’t confirm anything there either as everything is generalized.
      I ran out of time last night to check if ARC is working correctly. But plan on confirming/denying that when I get home from work today.
      As I’m with you that if it doesn't have Arc that is highly disappointing and makes no sense. Especially, if the lower end models have it. Unless if Micro HDMI prevents that from happening. But I don't see why that would be the case unless if bandwidth would be an issue. I’m not too familiar with the Micro HDMI specs and they are hard to find. So, I’m wondering if there is a difference.

    • @goods6106
      @goods6106 Год назад

      @@ThomasMuehler thanks for swift reply. I think the only way to find that out is to connect a soundbar via ARC to M8. Although I am 99% sure it doesn’t support ARC unfortunately. I’ve contacted Samsung support with this question and they replied that it does support it, and then I pointed out that M8 has only single mini HDMI port without mention ARC beside it, then they replied saying that they made a mistake in previous reply and no it doesn’t support ARC. Even their own support was confused as they only read the same manuals as we do… So no worries, about you mentioning this in your video as it’s very easy to miss that. It’s not intuitive that better model would have downgrade in port features! If you will get a chance to test it yourself, please let me know! Have a good day!

      The m8 is definitely the better choice for a lot of reasons if you can afford it. I was not impressed with the G7. Mostly because I found the sharpness, colors, and contrast to all be crap for a 4k panel. The smart features were alright. But at that point you'd really be better buying a nice gaming monitor and then a fire TV or something for the smart features. @@david-qr7kz I don't have a particular recommendation. As I haven't looked for a while. But I can give you a list of specs to check for.
      The sweet spot of monitors for price to performance is below. And obviously comes down to personal preferences and monetary limitations.
      1. I'd recommend 2560x1440p resolution over 4K or 1080p for gaming. As that is the sweet spot. But a 1080p monitor will be the cheapest and easiest to run games at high frame rates.
      2. IPS or VA screen that supports 10 bit color. As that gives you the most accurate colors which is important. Ideally you want 100% sRGB and 85% or high D3 color range. I'd also go with VA over IPS personally as it has better contrast ratio. But there are pros/cons with VA and IPS panels that you should study beforehand to make sure you make the right choice for you.
      3. 4 or less ms response rate (means it is the newer tech over the older tech).
      4. 144 Hz refresh rate.
      5. FreeSync Support with ideally Gsync COMPATIBLE (over capable as that will be dramatically more).

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад

      I think it comes down to personal preference. I personally didn't like the M7 at all. To the point I just didn't use it. Mostly because I thought the 4k screen was average at best. However, I've heard they made some improvements to the screen with newer models. If that weren't the case (the bad screen) then I would completely agree with you. I also think the processor is a bit faster so depending on how impatient you are that could play another role. But I think your best bet would be to buy a normal mid priced 4k Monitor and a Fire TV stick and you'd have a better monitor and a faster processor for smart features for less money.

    I agree with you 100%, but the m7 typically goes for sale around ~$300 cad, while the m8 stays fixed at $900 cad. Is it worth the 3x premium?

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад +5

      You make a great point and I think that comes down to the individual.
      Personally, I hated using the M7 because the screen quality is terrible. It was simply the worst 4K screen I've ever seen/used. The M8's 4K screen is improved. To the point it is still on my desk. I also find the smart features to work better where I'd actually use them. Translated that means I think the 3x premium is worth it TO ME as it actually means I'll use the product and for the most part enjoy it when I do. Yes, the M8 and M7 do the same thing. But on completely different levels. So it comes down to the use case and how much expendable income you have.
      But the better option would be to buy a dumb monitor (just regular 4k Monitor) which will likely give you better picture quality while being a lot cheaper. And then buy a Fire TV stick or similar which would not only be cheaper but also work faster. Which is what I would actually recommend to people. But then it complicates the setup as that is part of the premium you are paying for the M7 and M8.
      Something that people aren't thinking of either is that with inflation being out of control and the whole recovering from COVID19 new products cost a LOT more than they used to make. So, with the M7 already being made it holds the retail price. As they aren't really making new ones just selling old stock. The M8 may have inflated pricing because they are having to make it new with all the increase in prices. In the US the M7 is 369.99 but on sale for 329.99. The M8 is 699.99 retail but on sale for 599.99. So a bit less than 2x which makes it an easier choice. So, I guess it also comes down to which markets you are looking at and where you live.
      But great points. Interesting to think about on both sides of the spectrum. As I think the M7 is a better choice for your average individual as they aren't going to know what they are missing. Or if you are buying this for your kid. Or just simply using it as another monitor occasionally or in your kitchen while making meals. It also is VESA mountable. You could come up with a bunch of points making the M7 better. But for spoiled brats like me the M8 is the winner.

    • @mikek6791
      @mikek6791 2 года назад

      @@ThomasMuehler Thanks for your thorough input. You made some really great points - if it comes down to 2x the price, I think I would also consider the m8. One thing to note about the picture quality on the m7, there is a 2022 revised model with a glossy finish that would greatly improve contrast and sharpness that the 2020 model lacked. I know that matte finishes are more preferred by the mass consumers, but Dave2d made some interesting takes on the glossy vs. matte screens: ruclips.net/video/3mTV1TOblbA/видео.html&ab_channel=Dave2D. Personally, I think the glossy finish makes sense for such a media consumption oriented hardware, where its surroundings and lightings can be easily manipulated. With this glossy finish buff, I feel like the picture quality on the m7 could be on par or arguably better than the m8. As for me, I took the bullet and bought the revised m7 with just a few days left in shipping, but I understand that it's not for everyone.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад +1

      @@mikek6791 Interesting, that would make a difference. I didn't think it came down to just that... but maybe I'm wrong. I personally like glossy screens as I prefer to have sharper image over better light diffusion. But again this comes down to personal preference and use case. Also, I'll make sure to check out Dave2D. Love that guy.
      I don't think the M7 or M8 are for everyone. But if it fits your use case then they are brilliant and hard to beat. I would love to hear your thoughts on the M7 when you get it in and try it out. I had it at launch and should revisit it. @ThomasMuehler  2 года назад

      Yes, it is good to do office work... but I'm not sure why you would buy a smart monitor to do office work when you could buy a lot cheaper monitor that probably would do better at that.
      My biggest complaint that made me not enjoy the M7 is the colors came off as 6-bit to me over at a bare minimum 8-bit but I'd like to see 10-bit for a 4K monitor. For office work that doesn't matter but to me for video it does. I don't recall what the bit rate actually is based off the spec sheet. The CPU that also ran everything was also a bit too slow to me (but I'm picky and spoiled). But for the price and what you get didn't think it was terrible. Just not for me (as I'm not their target demographic). I also think the M7 has had some revisions since it first came out so those complaints may have been solved. I've had a lot of comments that have gone with it over the M8 and don't regret their decision at all.

      @@alphacretz Totally agree the M8 is a lot more and you lose some features. So I'm not sure what Samsung was thinking with that. Granted I do find the M8 to be a great monitor for laptops as you can use USB-C to both connect to the display and charge your device which I like a lot. But the cost as you mention is one of the main reasons I see people go with the M7 which I totally get. As you get 80-90% of the features for dramatically less.
      As for the 2 different inputs side to side. I don't know. I don't have it setup and honestly won't remember to actually test out. I believe the M8 does but there are certain limitations that I can't remember (but think I mention in the review). Honestly, I don't know very much about the steam deck. If you are saying to plug the steam deck into this and play games I don't see why it wouldn't be adequate. As it has good response time and good colors. Large screen. It is a 4k screen which requires a lot of power (strength) of the GPU which will limit it. Along with being 60 Hz. Where I consider the best "gaming" spot to be 1440p 144 - 240 Hz. But again, I'm not sure what the power of the steam deck is.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Год назад

      I believe it still has it. As technically, ARC is supported on HDMI 1.4 and above. This has Micro HDMI 2.0. I also did some testing after another person commented. Speakers aren't my forte so correct me if I'm wrong but;
      I plugged my eARC/ARC soundbar into the monitor via the included Micro HDMI cable. It immediately came up with "Atmos Enabled Soundbar" and started playing audio through it when navigating the menus. Also, started Netflix via the onboard apps and it came across as Dolby Atmos audio.
      However, keep in mind with HDMI 2.0 it will be compressed Dolby and not lossless (I think).
      Then I plugged in my windows laptop to the monitor via USB C with Micro HDMI cable still plugged into the soundbar and immediately got sound. As I would have expected. Also, went to Netflix and opened the same movie on my laptop and it came across as Dolby Atmos audio as well. Also, noticed that when I was using the Samsung remote that it would control the soundbars volume along with mute it. Last, when I turned off the monitor the soundbar also turned off.
      Last, I wanted to plug the soundbar into the monitor via Micro HDMI, then plug an HDMI cable from the soundbar to my laptop but the soundbar I have only has a single port.
      Again, speakers aren't my forte. But doesn't that mean that it DOES have Audio Return Channel (ARC)?

      I too was surprised that the price increase is significant. But I think it is justified. As I think in every single category (except for what we mentioned above) is a step up. I really didn't like the M7 at all. I liked the idea and think they did a good job at pulling it off. I just felt like everything was of poor quality and not worth it. Especially, since I found the picture quality (brightness, colors, contrast, sharpness, etc.) to be substandard. If that would have been fine I would like it a lot more and could deal with the other aspects. Which is why I think the M8 still destroys the M7. As I liked nearly everything on the M8 where I disliked nearly everything on the M7.
      But it also comes down to personal preferences and what you are looking for out of a monitor and what you get for the price. The M7 brings a lot of value for the price but cuts a lot of corners. The m8 does the same thing without as much corner cutting. In my opinion.
